The ABCs of Kindergarten
A (Alphabetic Principle) 1. Words have letters, 2. Letters have sounds, 3. Sounds make
words. Our literacy program has a phonics based approach; we will first study the letters,
then their sounds and lastly how we can manipulate these sounds to create and sound out
words as we read and write.
B (Birthdays) We will celebrate every childs birthday. Summer birthdays will be given a
date at the end of the year where their birthdays will be recognized. We will have a
Birthday Book Bin. On your childs birthday I am asking that you donate a book to our
classroom. A special label will be attached to the book and the books will be in the special
birthday bin. This bin will be in our reading center and children will be permitted to look at
their classmates special birthday books.
C (Community) Classroom community is key to building strong relationships. Students
will work and play together in harmony while building friendships.
D (Discipline) We have a school wide discipline plan which we will use in our classroom.
The discipline model is the rainbow chart--students begin at orange and can move down
to yellow or red or move up to green or purple. A copy/explanation of the rainbow chart
can be found in their take home folder.
E (Email) If you need to get in contact with me email is the best way to do so. I check
my email regularly christal.webber@cms.k12.nc.us
F (Field Trips) To chaperone on a field trip you must register online on the CMS website
under the volunteer tab. This must be done on a yearly basis.
G (Gym) We will go to gym once a week. It is important that the children dress
appropriately (ie gym shoes and no dresses.)
H (Homework) Homework will be given each month.
I (Investigations) We will use Investigations math and Kathy Richardson.
J (Jobs) Each child will get a classroom job every week. We will rotate through jobs
every Monday to ensure each child gets a turn for each job.
K (Kindness) We treat each other with kindness and respect.

L (Lunch) Your child has the option to buy or pack lunch each day. Lunch numbers will be
assigned and it is expected that your child learns this number. Free and reduced lunch
forms can be filled out online at
http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/cmsdepartments/cns/pages/FreeandReducedMeals.aspx
M (Media Center) The library is in the media center. Children will be able to check out
one book each week; however, if they do not return the book from the previous week, they
will not be able to borrow another until it is returned.
N (News) All school and class communication will be placed in your childs communication
folder. You can also visit our class website for class-specific updates at
http://www.christal.webber.weebly.com ------------------------------------------------
O (Office) Prior to visiting the classroom or eating lunch with your child, you must
check in at the office and receive a visitors pass.
P (Parent Involvement) Research shows that children are more likely to succeed if their
parents are involved in their daily work. It is very important that parents check their
childs folder on a daily basis and initial the behavior log daily.
Q (Quarterly Reports) Students will receive progress reports and report cards each
quarter. These reports are based on the common core standards for kindergarten. I will
meet with you once for a formal conference after 1
st
quarter. In addition, I am available to
meet with you any time afterschool to discuss your childs progress.
R (Reading Logs) Each quarter a new reading log will be placed in the communication
folder. Reading daily will pay off as the year progresses.
S (Star of the Month) Every month I will elect a child to be our Star of the Month. If
your child is chosen for Star of the month they can bring in photos of themselves and
their family for our board in the hallway. Each month we will choose one boy and one girl
from the class who shows outstanding character traits.
T (Transportation) Whether your childs dismissal is by car, bus, walker, or afterschool,
I must have a written note regarding transportation changes. Students may not be picked
up after 2:30. If you need to take your child to an appointment, keep that in mind when
picking them up.

U (Unfinished Work) As part of our literacy and math programs your child will have
work on a daily basis. This is called seatwork or independent work. I check their seatwork
daily to ensure it is finished correctly, completely and neatly. If your child brings home a
paper that says finish at home please help them finish it and return it to school the next
day.
V (Volunteers) If you wish to be a volunteer please register online at www.cms.k12.nc.us
under the volunteers tab.
W (Writing) Students learn to write in definite developmental stages. We will work on
writing skills in a creative, non-threatening way. We will keep a writing journal and work in
writing workshop daily. You can help your child by practicing writing their name, letters
and using writing as a tool for spelling.
X (eXcused/uneXcused absences) If your child will be absent due to illness, medical
appointments etc. you must a write a note in order for it to count as an excused
absence. All absences without a note will be considered unexcused and will remain on
your childs attendance record. If your child will be tardy, the same policies applies.
Y (Young) Kindergarteners are YOUNG!!! Creating an environment that supports
independence is my goal.
Z (Zippers, buttons, snaps and laces) Please make sure any clothing you put your child
in, they are able to zip, button, or snap back up themselves. This is a self-help skill which
they should be able to do independently. When there are 20+ kids needing help with
zipping their coats to go outside, this takes a lot of our valuable, needed, and limited
outside playtime! Shoe laces are a very tricky thing and I know a lot of children still need
help, but with your help it will come eventually!
Thanks for reading! I hope you found this helpful
