1-2. Features
Centrifuge Balance model CB 220 is an electronic differential scale with special
features. The equipment has two weight-sensors and control circuitries.
The equipment measures two loads of weights together and displays the difference
of two weights, and lights an indication lamp at lighter side to inform operators of
which side of load is lighter and how much.
In all blood banks and laboratories, many centrifuges are used everyday in the
process of plasma/platelet separation. As it's a must to check and balance the two
total weights of bloodbags that are to be loaded at two opposite baskets of a
centrifuge machine, balancing job requires a long time and patience of operators.
Now with this new Centrifuge Balance, the balancing job can be done just in a few
seconds, and it requests operator's least attention, furthermore expensive centrifuge
machines can be protected safe.
Operation of the equipment is very simple. After loading two loads onto each tray,
if GOOD lamp is not lit, add one or a few of small pieces on the tray where a lamp
is on until you have GOOD lamp indication. That's all.
Having GOOD lamp indication means that weights of two loads are same within
the pre-determined tolerance value - say 2 grams. This value can be changed by
manufacturer's revision of software upon special request from users.
Warming-up of 10 seconds is required when power is turned on.
equipment checks itself and stabilizes weight-sensitive circuits.

meminta sedikitnya perhatian operator , mesin centrifuge selanjutnya
mahal dapat dilindungi aman.
Pengoperasian peralatan sangat sederhana . Setelah loading dua beban
ke setiap baki ,
jika lampu BAIK tidak menyala , tambahkan satu atau beberapa
potongan-potongan kecil di atas nampan di mana lampu menyala
sampai Anda memiliki indikasi lampu BAIK .

Overall System Block Diagram

3-2

3-2. Main Board

Main board comprises two load cell amplifiers, two analog-to-digital converters,
ROM memory and a microprocessor.
[Figure 3-2] represents the functional block diagram of Main board assembly.

[Figure 3-2]

Main Board Functional Block Diagram

3-3

(1) Load cell amplifiers ;

Load cells generate very weak signals that are proportional to the weights applied on
each load cell.
OP amp stages U1 and U2 amplify the weak signal by 60 DB and feed it to the A/D
converter U3. Potentiometer VR1 adjusts offset voltage, and VR2 adjusts signal
gain of amplification.
The other chain is exactly identical. U4 and U5 are amplifiers, U6 is A/D converter.
(2) A/D converters ;
A/D converters U3 and U6 convert each analog signal to digital signal.
They communicate with the microprocessor U9, and each converter provides 4-bit
digit selects and 4-bit data to microprocessor U9.
(3) Microprocessor and memory ;
Microprocessor U9 is an 8-bit CPU. It is the heart of the equipment, controls all
circuits, switch and displays.
On power on, it self-checks for 10 seconds, tares the weights of hardwares and trays
loaded on each load cell.
After two centrifuge baskets loaded onto each tray, it measures each weight and
compares the two weights. Difference of weights is displayed on panel.
If difference of weights is within the preset tolerance - say 2 grams, it commands the
GOOD lamp to be lit. If two weights are not same each other, it commands an LED
lamp at lighter side to be lit.
Pressing the ZERO button switch makes the CPU tare and difference displayed goes
to zero any time.
U8 is a ROM where all software programs are stored.

3-4

3-3. Panel Board

Panel board comprises LED addressing and drive logic circuits, 4-digit 7-segment
LED displays, three LED lamps and a button switch.
[Figure 3-3] represents the functional block diagram of Panel board assembly.

U1 is segment selector, U2 is chip selector.

They drive the four common-anode LED displays SEG1 through SEG4.
LD1 is turned on when the weight at left side is lighter than what is at right side.
LD3 is turned on when the weight at right side is lighter than what is at left side.
LD2 is turned on when difference of weights is within the preset tolerance.
A tactile push button switch is for ZERO command to the microprocessor.

3-5

3-4. Power Supply Board

Power supply board comprises three voltage regulator circuits - +12V, +5V, -5V.
[Figure 3-4] represents the functional block diagram of Power supply board assembly.

(1) +12V Regulator ;

U1 takes voltage from an AC power adapter, and outputs a regulated voltage of
+12 volts. Q1 is a current-booster transistor.
(2) +5V Regulator ;
U5 is a +5 volt regulator.
(3) -5V Regulator ;
+12 volts is regulated down at U2, then supplied to a negative voltage converter
U3. Output from U3 is -9V, which voltage is regulated to -5V at U4.

3-6

4. Standard Operating Procedures

(1) Remove everything on trays, then turn power switch on.
(2) Wait for 10 seconds until display shows " 0 ".
. GOOD lamp is turned on too.
[Note 1] If anything remains on trays or trays are touched during the 10 seconds,
equipment will maintain basic errors in weight display.
Turn power off and turn on again.
[Note 2] If you want to use containers for bloodbags, put the containers on both
trays before turning power on. Initial weights of containers must be there on
the trays all the time throughout whole processes.
(3) Load the bloodbags, or centrifuge baskets with bloodbags, onto both trays.
. Display shows a weight difference value.
. A lamp, either A or B will be lit.
. If GOOD lamp is lit, proceed to (5).
[Note 3] Bloodbags may be put in containers or centrifuge baskets.
In any case, the total weight of loads on a tray should be less than 2.5Kg.
If loaded weight would exceed 2.5 Kg, display would show " O L", which
stands for "Over-Loaded".
(4) Add one or a few of small weights on the tray where the lamp is on until GOOD
lamp is turned on.
. Display will show a value of less than 3 grams.
. Either A or B may or may not be turned on.
[Note 4] The small pieces of weights will be prepared in advance.
It is recommended that the small pieces would be in several different sizes,
for example - 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 grams each.
A new bloodbag is the best material to prepare such extra weights, as it is
soft and easy to cut.

4-1

(5)

Unload the bloodbags from trays.

Now both loads are balanced, good to load at a centrifuge machine.
[Note 5] During your works, if you watch that display shows a non-zero value
even though nothing is loaded on the trays, depress the ZERO button once.
This could be happen due to a drift in the circuits of weight-sensors.

4-2

5. Troubleshootings
This chapter describes how to troubleshoot and calibrate the equipment by authorized
service personnel with proper test equipments.
Troubleshooting flow chart leads service personnel to a faulty assembly or to one or
a few suspicious components. When a faulty assembly or component is isolated, it
would be adjusted in accordance with corresponding calibration procedures, or be
replaced with a good one.
Followings are the topics covered in this chapter ;
. Precautions for troubleshooting

5-4. Weight Calibration

Weight Check
As this equipment is all solid-state and uses very reliable weight sensors with big
number of safety figure, there exists very small possibility that calibration of weight
displays would be out of allowable tolerance range.
In principle, there exists an error due to decimal truncation which is 1 gram max.
It is considered that discrepancy between -1 to +2 grams is allowable total
tolerance at this equipment.
Following procedures describe how to check weight accuracy.
(1) Prepare a known weight of about 1,500 - 2,000 grams.
(2) Turn power on and, after 10 seconds stand-by, put it on a tray.
(3) Read the value displayed. If the value displayed is out of your allowance,
follow calibration procedures below.
(4) Repeat para. (1) through (3) at the other tray.
Weight Calibration
This calibration of weighing circuit is very sensitive and time-taking.
Follow procedures below carefully.
(1) Prepare a small size flat(-) tip screwdriver of 2-3 mm diameter.
(2) Prepare a standard or known weight between 1,500 - 2000 grams.
(Let's say, the weight = W1).
(3) Remove trays and open cover case.
A.

Left channel calibration ;

(1) While depressing the ZERO button, turn the power switch ON.
Equipment enters into test mode, where displays show a direct reading of
the weight loaded on the left load cell.
(2) Adjust VR3 (Left-Offset) till the displays show "1200".
(Let's say, the now-displayed number = W2).
Confirm that displayed figure decreases when you push the left load cell
softly.
NOTE :
As the A/D converter can handles 1999 maximum, while we need to
weigh upto 2500 grams, a polarity bit is also used. Therefore the A/D
converter gives output data to CPU actually from -1999 to +1999.
(NOTE continues in next page .......)

5-5

When no load is put on the load cell, A/D converter should be in negative
region. In negative region, output from A/D converter decreases when a
weight is loaded. After passing zero point, it goes into positive region.
In positive region, output from A/D converter increases when a weight is
loaded.
(3) Put the known weight on left load cell.
(Let's say, the displayed number = W3).
If W1 - W2 is not equal to W3, you need gain adjustment.
VR4 changes Left-Gain. Turn it clockwise to increase circuit gain, or turn
it counter-clockwise to decrease gain.
Be careful to turn it a little, about one eighth to one fourth of a rotation
slowly. Do not turn any potentiometer screw too much at a time.
NOTE :
If W3 is smaller than W1 -W2, it means the gain is too low.
If W3 is greater than W1 -W2, it means the gain is too high.
(4) To adjust gain, unload the weight first, then increase or decrease gain at VR4.
Then repeat from para. (2) until you get W1 - W2 = W3.
B.

Right channel calibration ;

(1) Press the ZERO button once.
Equipment enters into test mode to check the right channel.
(2) Adjustment is exactly identical with at left channel.
So, follow the above procedures from para. (2).
VR1 is for Right-Offset, VR2 is for Right-Gain adjustment.
NOTE :
Pressing the ZERO button once will make the equipment enter into test mode
to check the left channel again. It toggles between left and right channels.
