Emmanuel Manngo is your friendly
pharmacist at Burgersfort Pharmacy.
It is estimated
that about 300
million people
globally suffer
from asthma.
Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow
and swell while you produce extra mucus. This can
make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, wheez-
ing and shortness of breath. For some people asthma
is a minor nuisance, but for others it can be a major
problem and possibly life-threatening. Asthma cannot
be cured, but the symptoms can be controlled.
Asthma symptoms include shortness of breath; chest
tightness or pain; having trouble sleeping caused by
shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing; a whis-
tling or wheezing sound when exhaling (wheezing is a
common sign of asthma in children) and coughing or
wheezing attacks that are worsened by a respiratory
virus, such as a cold or flu. Asthma is often caused by
a combination of environmental and genetically
inherited factors.
It is important to work with your doctor and pharmacist
to treat the asthma symptoms. If you are not sure
whether you have asthma or just a common cold, ask
your pharmacist for advice. He or she will refer you to
your doctor for further advice and if needed prescrip-
tion medication. Quick relief inhalers and other
medication are available to help ease the symptoms
of an asthma sufferer.

The theme of the day was: Women should
not feel like hiding their children living with
disabilites. The Gowe Parish Prayer
Womens League donated clothes, food and
soap to the children at the Rehlahleng Special
School. The day was filled with well wishes,
messages of encouragement and motivation
for women with children living with disabilities.
Const Victoria Maluleka from the Burgersfort

A 57-year old man from Mokutung
Village was arrested for rape and
appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrates
Court on Monday this week.
A case of rape was opened at the
Leboeng police station on 16 August
2014. The complainant, a 17-year old
girl, accuses her biological father of
raping her. According to the report she
was asleep in her room when the man
entered it while shouting that she must
go to her friend and collect the hair
dryer she borrowed to the friend without
her fathers consent back. She allegedly
went out running. On her way back, she
met up with her father who allegedly
grapped her and raped her in the veld.
The case was postponed to 26 August
2014 for a legal aid application. The
suspect remains in custody. We
condemn this kind of abuse, especially
abuse against women and children. We
encourage the community to report any
form of abuse. We also warn those who
are still abusing women and children
that they will face the law, said Const.
MA Sibatana from the Leboeng SAPS.

R115 900, which spells entry level. General Motors South Africa
offers the Chevrolet Spark 1.2 Campus in this hotly contested
market segment and we drove it this week Wednesday.
Taking delivery of the little car from Westvaal Steelpoort when
the editors own vehicle indicated 32 degrees Celsius as the outside
temperature, made us apprehensive of the little Chev.
But, while entry level spells bare bones with regard to most
respects of the car, it does have an air conditioner that performs
adequately in the local heat. And it is big on safety with features
such as airbags for driver and passenger and anti-lock brakes.
The car is furnished in somber dark plastics and fabric, which
appear tasteful and quite solid for an entry-level vehicle.
Do not expect too much luxury in this little fella. The drive is
harsh and noisy, as can be expected, but should be bearable on
smoother tarmac. And the boot is almost nonexistent. The back
seats however, have a nifty system of folding completely flat to
increase luggage space when travelling two-up.
In front the driver and passenger have the luxury of a bottle
holder for each, but at the back, only one. Should you carry more
than one at the back, they must take turns.
It has no, radio, no Bluetooth, no ashtray, no lighter (but a 12V
charging socket for charging you GPS or cellphone), no USB and no
electric windows (winders all around).
The instrument nacelle sits motorcycle style above the non-
adjustable steering wheel. It is quite clear and easy to read, but the
steering wheel rim tends to obstruct the top part of the speed
indicator.
Figures in this market segment are quite academic, but the 1.2
litre four cylinder normally aspirated petrol power plant feels quite
nippy in town and steering is precise.
On the open road the car is no rocket and labours above 120
kilometres per hour, as its peers do. Road holding is surprisingly
good and it brakes well with discs in front and drums at the rear.
On gravel the car is also rock fast and handles undulations with
aplomb.
So, what is the bottom line? The answer is that if you are four
people you can go to the beach, provided you do not pack much
more than swimwear and toothbrushes. If you are nudists, you can
even fit in some toothpaste. And for entertainment, you will have to
talk to each other. Loudly.
No, this is not a long distance luxury cruiser with all the bells and
whistles and you should not use it for that purpose. Buy it for a
student, or when you have just landed your first job or if you want it
for a sturdy, safe and economical everyday roundabout in town.
Call Westvaal Steelpoort on 013 230 9519 if you want one.

A National Consumer Commission
investigation in Mpumalanga and
North West recently exposed 84
shops who were guilty of tampering
with labels on items such as eggs,
milk, tea, mincemeat, baby formula,
cheese and biscuits. The retailers
who came under fire include some
shops from large chain groups such
as Shoprite, Spar, OK Foods, U-save,
Woolworths and others.
According to reports the inspectors
were shocked to find that in some
cases ti ns of baby formul a had
expired last year, but was still being
sold at the same price at the time of
the investigation. Food labels were
being removed or torn off, in some
cases i t was bei ng erased wi th
marking fluid. Some items had no
labeling and in other cases new labels
had been pasted over the originals
that showed the expiry date.
The gui l ty shops si gned forms
undertaking to rectify their wrongful
practices. It is an offence under the
Consumer Protection Act to alter,
falsify, or remove a food label and if
someone is found guilty of such a
crime, they could face up to 12
months imprisonment or a fine of R1
million. Alternatively the shop could
be fined up to 10% of their annual
turnover.
Although it is not always dangerous
to eat expired food, it can in some
cases lead to food poisoning which
in extreme cases can be fatal.
The Commissions inspection team
had in some cases heard that the
shops were losing money and the
managers had instructed their staff to
remove the labels to try and get more
time to sell the products.
Responses from the big retailers
varied as many of the franchises are
individually owned and operated in
other cases it was attributed to human
error. The Commission said that the
shops visited were from chains with
a countrywide presence, but that
many spaza shops and general
dealers were also at fault. Theyve
warned consumers to check expiry
dates. Consumers can also lodge
complaints with regards to shops who

Platinum Gazette asked readers what
they think about this and if theyve
recently experienced any such cases
in the Burgersfort area.
Ms Yvonne Makofane said: It is
good if the Consumer Commission
scare these shops because next
time they will not do it again. No,
Ive never bought any expired
things in Burgersfort.
Mr Mischack Mzimba said: It is a
good thing they inspect the shops.
No, Ive never seen such things
here.
Mr Council Malatji said: Ja, I did
have an experience. I bought a
juice and joghurt at a shop here in
Burgersfort that was expired. I did
not bring it back, it was weekend so
I just threw it away. These guys
must check the stock.
Mr Solomon Mohlala said: No, Ive
not seen anything like it here. I
think it is good if they get into
trouble because people will get sick
if they eat expired food.
Mr Mapanga Tshimane, Mr Honey Mapanga and Mr
Salvation Mphogo said: Those shops have to get into
trouble. Here in Burgersfort weve always had good
food and other products.
Mr Doctor Masinga said: Yes, the
shops must sell fresh stuff. There
are some shops around here that
sell pap and meat. I think they
recycle the meat that are off into
the pap and meat. When I buy from
them my stomach always ache.
They like money too much.
Mr Sam Masinga said: The shops
know the law. They should sell
fresh things. They must get closed
down or fined when they are guilty.
I dont know about Burgersfort. We
just buy without checking the expiry
date.
Ms Lillian Mashile said: They must
fine those shops because youll get
sick. No, here with us everything is
fine. With her is Rachel.
Mr Themba Maebela and Mr Frans Malesa said: We
have no problem in Burgersfort. Clamping down on
those stores will keep them on their toes. It is a good
thing.
Mr Abram Phako said: No, in
Burgersfort Ive not come across a
problem. I often buy from Spar and
Pick n Pay and they sell fresh stuff.
They should close the stores that
are guilty of those practices until it
is rectified. They were doing things
that are totally unhealthy.
Mr Johannes Moreku and Mr Alfred Mokwena said: It
is good to fine those stores. Charge them or close
them down! Expired goods are dangerous for our
health. Weve bought eggs at a general dealer in
Burgersfort and they were bad.
Ms Elizabeth Masinga and Ms Lebogang Tonga said:
Weve never seen something like that here. It is not
good if those shops were selling expired goods.
Mnr Steven Fourie s: Dis n goeie
ding. n Mens betaal so duur en om
dan nog af goed te koop werk net

Es-p.
Mr Edmund Maroga, Ms Magnecia Lesese and Ms
Elsie Magabe said: They must not be allowed to do
that! It is illegal. In Burgersfort we rotate the stock and
the shops have merchandisers who check that it is not
expired.
Mr AL Malepe said: It is a good
thing to close those shops. Health
inspectors must see to it that the
shops sell fresh food. There is
negligence from the shops in our
area. I recently bought eggs at one
of the stores that had expired and
they were bad. I discovered it at
home. No, I did not take it back.
Mr Tim Matsi said: I have not
experience something like that
here. Those guilty shops should be
fined. What if someone gets sick or
die from the stuff?
Mr Lifie Tlaka said: It is a good
thing that they inspect the shops.
Ive once bought drumsticks for a

Burgersfort. When I got home it was
expired and bad. I had misplaced

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA)
launched its campaign for the 90
th
Comrades
Marathon on 14 August 2014.
The 2015 campaign carries the slogan: Be
Part of It - Bamba Iqhaza. CMA General
Manager, Chris Bruwer who unveiled the
campaign says, We invite every Comrades
runner, stakeholder, volunteer and supporter
to be a part of this iconic race in one way or
another.

edition of the race will be run on
Sunday, 31 May 2015. The up-run will start
at the Durban City Hall at 05h30 and end 12
hours later at the Oval Cricket Stadium in
Pietermaritzburg, covering a distance of 87km.
1 September 2014 is the opening date for
entries into the 2015 Comrades Marathon. The
entry period will close on 30 November 2014
or as soon as the special entry cap of 23,000
has been reached. Prospective entrants are
encouraged to get their entries in early so as
to avoid disappointment.

are as follows:
Local Entries: R 380.00

Qualifying for the 2015 Comrades Marathon
will be applicable from 1 August 2014 till 4 May
2015. Runners are advised that the 2014
Comrades Marathon will not be an automatic
qualifier for next years race. Race Director
Rowyn James says, The reason for this is two-
fold. We want to encourage runners to be fit
and healthy for Race Day. Further, we want
to support all other road-running races in the
country, especially the Comrades Marathon
qualifying races by driving Comrades runners
to participate in those running events. The
Substitution window period will be from 1 21
April 2015. In a first for South African road-
running, R1.5-million is up for grabs to the First
Man and Woman respectively who break the
current male and female up-run records
thereby making the Comrades Marathon by
far the most lucrative race on the local athletics
scene. The first man and woman to cross the
finish line will receive R375,000 each. The total
prize money for the 2015 Comrades Marathon
is R2.600,000; in addition to the respective
R1.5-million incentives for the man and woman
should they break the record.
