    Toxins produced by cyanobacterial algal blooms are found in many of South Africa's freshwater systems, and are a threat to public and ecosystem health. There is an increasing need for routine observations of water quality, allowing improvement of knowledge and risk management and quantitative assessment of the extent of eutrophication. Remote sensing can play a crucial role in determining water quality status across many water bodies in a cost-effective and routine manner.
