Lectures: Tutorials:

Wed 10:30-12:30 (CBE LT) 1 hour/week (CBE/BIE computer labs)
Thu 12:30-13:30 (CBE LT)

Course objective:

The objective of this course is to equip you with a systematic design methodology to design key
unit operations (i.e. reactor, separator, and heat exchanger) in a chemical plant, with an emphasis
on the conceptual issues that are fundamental to the process creation.

Learning outcomes:

Upon a successful completion of the course, you will be able to:
1. Identify basic chemical engineering principles and rules of thumb relevant to/needed for the
design of a particular unit operation
2. Apply systematic design methodology
Conceptual design (e.g. thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, mass/heat transfers)
Process flowsheet development
Process simulation using HYSYS
3. Examine the consequences of your design decisions and analyze the impacts of individual unit
design on the overall plant design
4. Evaluate overall plant design from both technical and economic perspective
