.It is important that the journalist is empowered in terms on knowledge, in terms of
information, and in this case in terms of African union mandate. In that case when
communicating about AMISOM business, a journalist will be able to be empowered
to know the information he is communicating that it is in line with the principles, the
policy, and the mandate of AMISOM. So this is why we have to have the journalists
given the knowledge in order to empower them understand AMISOM mandate and
why we are here.

I learnt so many things that I didnt know before. For example I learnt about the six
sectors that constitute the AMISOM mission in Somalia and I did know about them
before and so many other things but this is the most important lession that I took
from the training.

Before we didnt know what African union was coming here for but today we know
a lot of things.

STORY

The Political Unit of the African Union mission in Somalia hosted the first media
seminar and sensitization on stabilization strategy in the newly liberated areas
in Baidoa town located in south-central Somalia.
The fruitful discussions that brought together representatives from civil society,
local administration, local journalists and a cross-section of the community
sought to mobilize local support for the stabilization of the newly recovered
areas.
During the meeting, the representatives from the regions media fraternity
discussed their role in the sensitization and the stability efforts in the recovered
areas.
Speaking on behalf of AMISOM, Senior Political Officer Ssebirumbi Kisinziggo
said the media plays an important role of informing the public and through the
engagement the media stakeholders would be able to understand the role of the
AMISOM vis avis that of the Government especially during the vital period as
military recovers more areas from the Al Shabaab.
It is important that the journalists are empowered in terms of knowledge,
information and in this case in terms of AU mandate. In that case when
communicating about AMISOM role, journalists will be able to be empowered to
know the information communicated is in line with the principles, policy and
mandate of AMISOM.

Ssebirumbi noted that the platform of engagement will give the media
stakeholders knowledge in order to be empowered and to understand the
AMISOM mandate and its role in Somalia.

The participant who spoke at the event thanked AMISOM for reaching out to the
community and journalists and discussed ways of further enhancing dialogue
and coordination with AMISOM so as to complement the efforts of the Federal
Government of Somalia.
I learnt so many things that I did not know before, for example I learnt about the
six sectors that consist of AMISOM mission in Somalia, I did not know this
before, this was the first lesson and most important to understand said Ahmed
Bashir from Baidoa radio

Siraj Abdirahman, from the Somali National Television in Baiidoa said that the
engagement was important because now the journalists understand the role of
the AU mission in Somalia.

Before we did not know why African Union was in Somalia but today we know a
lot of things. Said Siraj

The Political Unit of AMISOM also held similar media seminar and sensitisation
of the stabilisation strategy for the newly recovered areas in Beledweyne, the
capital of Hiiraan region

The African Union Mission in Somalia is mandated to support the efforts of
government institutions. AMISOMs civilian component has closely co-operated
with key ministries on capacity building, service delivery and outreach
programs.
