The People

Throughout most of its history, the United States has had influxes of
immigration. The ethnic mix is 83% white (generally of European
descent, but also from the Middle East and Latin America), 12%
African-American, 3% Asian and about 1% Native American. Today the
biggest immigrant groups are from Latin countries.
Culture across United States
Although people in United States have many shared values but they
have their own regional and ethnic differences. To manage non-verbal
communication across such a big country, it is important to have basic
knowledge about the natives across different regions of the country.
Northeast- The northeast region of the country is the most populated
region. It has cities like New York, known as financial and corporate
capital of the county, Washington D.C. the capital of politics and Boston
the intellectual capital. Since, it is one of the most populated region,
people of different ethnicities live here. People live a fast paced and
high energy level life here. People take their work seriously and they
follow the ideology of time is money.
Southeast- People from southeast are generally gracious, warm,
hospitable and conservative. They live a bit slower life than their
northeast counterparts (Atlanta is an exception). Due to lower labour
costs and looser union regulation many factories have been relocated in
this region. The major cities include Miami known as capital of Latin
America and New Orleans known for international port.
Midwest- Midwest is the US heartland. People here are hardworking,
practical, family-oriented and religiously centred. They are friendly in
nature. Major cities include Chicago the cultural capital of Midwest and
Detroit the car capital.
West- California contributes to the 17% of total US GDP (if it were an
independent country its economy would be in worlds top 10
economies). Californians are the early adopters and many of the
national trends have begun here. People from Texas are known for
show offs and often termed as go getters.
American Cultural Values
Individualism: In United States, individualism among the people is
common. People tend to put themselves in front instead of group
and they do not succumb to the pressure of the group.
Equality and Fairness: Americans believe in equality and their
legal system is a proof. They have strict laws against racism and
great belief that justice will be served to everyone.
Privacy: Americans are very much particular about their personal
space and privacy. They get easily offended when their privacy is
not respected.
Independence: Americans like to get independent from a very early
age. They indulge in part time jobs for their pocket money from a
very young age.
Risk-taking: Americans are high risk takers and they believe in
theory of Its OK to fail and try again.
Belief in the American Dream: As it is famously said that America is
a land of opportunities. People have belief in American dream where
they believe that there is ample opportunity for everyone in United
States.
It all depends on you: The belief in American dream, high risk
taking attitude and independent nature has made the Americans
hard worker and they believe in the philosophy of It all depends on
you.
Time is money and must be controlled: Americans believe in the
philosophy of Time is money and they give utmost respect to each
others time.
Americans have the nature of moving on from past. They focus on making
their present better and future bright.
