1.0 INTRODUCTION
Meaning of open-source software
Open-source software or known as (OSS) is a computer software with its source code made
available and licensed with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to
study, change and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose. Open-source
software is very often developed in a public and collaborative manner. Open-source
software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared
to user-generated content or open-content movements.
Meaning of open-source hardware
Open source hardware consists of physical artifacts of technology designed and offered by
the open design movement. Both free and open source software (FOSS) , as well as open
source hardware is created by this open source culture movement and applies a like concept
to a variety of components. The term usually means that information about the hardware is
easily discerned. Hardware design, in addition to the software that drives the hardware, are
all released with the FOSS approach.
Meaning of software
Computer software also known as computer programs, is the non-tangible component of
computers. Computer software contrasts with computer hardware, which is the physical
component of computers. Computer hardware and software require each other and neither
can be realistically used without the other.
Meaning of hardware
Computer hardware is the collection of physical elements that constitutes a computer
system. Computer hardware refers to the physical parts or components of a computer such
as the monitor, mouse, keyboard, computer data storage, hard drive disk (HDD), system
unit, etc. all of which are physical objects that can be touched .In contrast, software is
instructions that can be stored and run by hardware.

2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM

2.1 Meaning of open source OS

In production and development, open source as a development model promotes a universal
access via free license to a product's design or blueprint, universal redistribution of that
design or blueprint, including subsequent improvements to it by anyone. Researchers view
open source as a specific case of the greater pattern of Open Collaboration. Before the
phrase open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of
other terms. Open source gained hold with the rise of the Internet, and the attendant need
for massive retooling of the computing source code. Opening the source code enabled a
self-enhancing diversity of production models, communication paths, and interactive
communities. The open-source software movement arose to clarify the environment that
the new copyright, licensing, domain, and consumer issues created

2.2 Examples of open source OS

Linux Mint 12

Ubuntu

Linux Mint is a one of the example of open source.
Its stated aim is to be a "modern, elegant and
comfortable operating system which is both
powerful and easy to use." Mint provides full out-
of-the-box multimedia support by including some
proprietary software such as Adobe Flash. Mint's
motto is "from freedom came elegance".

is a Debian-based Linux operating system, with
Unity as its default desktop environment. It is
based on free software and named after the
Southern African philosophy of ubuntu, which
often is translated as "humanity towards others" or
"the belief in a universal bond of sharing that
connects all humanity".

3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APLICATION SOFTWARE

3.1 Meaning of open source application software

Application software is a set of one or more programs designed to carry out operations for a
specific application. Application software cannot run on itself but it is dependent on system
software to execute. For example: MS Word, MS Excel, Tally software, Library management
system, billing system etc. The term is used to contrast such software with another type of
computer program referred to as system software, which manages and integrates a computer's
capabilities but does not directly perform tasks that benefit the user. The system software
serves the application, which in turn serves the user.

3.2 Examples of open source application software

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application developed
by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS. It features
calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro
programming language called Visual Basic for Applications. It
has been a very widely applied spreadsheet for these platforms,
especially since version 5 in 1993, and it has replaced Lotus 1-
2-3 as the industry standard for spreadsheets. Excel forms part
of Microsoft Office.
