Monster FM has been a Roaring success over
the years and for 2014 its back again and the
team are offering you loads of programming
choice to get your teeth into during their 28 day
run on 106.1fm this September.
Radioskills, based at Moray Firth Radio are the
people behind it, or more so this years intake of
trainees who are currently studying towards an
SQA Certicate in Radio Broadcasting. As, again
they will be showcasing their talents and skills
obtained on the course in the last few months.
Heres a taster of what you can expect:
The Alternative Music Show offers an insight
into the world of Grunge, Alt Rock & Punk with the
latest work from local bands. The weekly
Gaelic Magazine Show will bring you all the
celebrity gossip and give you an idea of whats hot
or not & whats happening in the Inverness Area.
Caithness lad Steven will be presenting a
Scottish n Irish Country Show & a Scottish
Dance Show. Hes been playing the Accordion for
around 8 years and will educate you with his good
knowledge of both music scenes while chatting
with some of his favourites.

The News Review - weekly informal news review
which will take an in depth look at the biggest
local, national & international stories. It will also
guide you through the latest music releases
with a range of guests, commentators and with
the help of the Sunday Illumination they will be
shedding some light on some of the background
to the stories that dominate our headlines.
You can hear the nest selection of 80s music
and nd out what the biggest artists of the
decade are up to now. For some toe tapping soul
and funk, rooted in gospel check out Monster
Motown Sound featuring legendary songs from
James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye

Nairn Book & Arts Festival (NB&AF) up the visual art quotient to the east... |
FILM: Live theatre in the cinema aplenty (Medea, A Streetcar Named Desire),
a newie with Helen Mirren worth your attention, The Hundred Foot Journey,
plus the mega-all-star-cast Highland-set What We Did On Our Holiday and the
beguilingly titled Sex Tape. | KIDS: Much to involve the kids with in FBAF and
NB&AF, plus family fun as part of Highland Homecoming Scotland events (see
Specials below) and a huge Fun Day at Inshes District Park. | MUSIC: The excellent
Blas festival spreads its Gaelic charm throught the Highlands, and the small but
perfectly formed boutique fest Jocktoberfest also returns whilst both Kate
Rusby and Sharon Corr hit Inverness. Indie action agogo with Embrace, The
Twilight Sad and The Phantom Band all involved. Also the return of the Mahler
Players. | SPECIALS: In addition to those arts festivals (FBAF and NB&AF) there
is the World Sheepdog Trials (guilty your honour!) and the visit of Python legend
Michael Palin. And a little thing called Highland Homecoming Scotland - the
beginning of a 2 month focus on the Highlands. The Highland Military Tattoo,
Parade of the Highland Clans and the Masters World Championships
(MWC2014) being particular high points this month. | SPORT: As if the MWC2014
with nearly 200 heavies from around the globe wasnt exciting enough, you may
feel the ground shake as they attempt a Guinness World Record combined caber
toss. Plus Loch Ness Marathon, Snooker Legends with STEPHEN HENDRY
& JIMMY WHITE and the Camanachd Cup Final. | THEATRE: Scottish Ballet
combine The Crucible with the words of Dylan Thomas read by Richard Burton
- wow, our own Florians Theatre put on Oh What A Lovely War!, FBAFs
highlights include MacbethThe Remix, and returning after his Adolf show, Pip
Utton brings his Churchill to Strathpeer. Oh and Ross Noble and Jo Cauleld
head some top comedians on oer.

Art in all sorts of places this month, most notably at the FINDHORN BAY ARTS FESTIVAL
which runs from 2428 SEP. Theyre providing a great opportunity for people to take in
everything on offer with LATE NIGHT ART on 25 SEP, giving you a chance to experience
the best of Moray art in one late night sojourn. All Festival exhibitions will be opening
their doors and staying open late, with many of our artists on hand to meet and greet and
discuss the inspiration behind their work. There will be informal talks and presentations
throughout the evening and many of the galleries will have live music and will be providing
snacks and drinks. The Kinloss Abbey will be lit up as part of Late Night Art and a number
of artists studios will be open in the Findhorn Foundation Eco Village. Theres also a
bus tour taking in the venues, which has to be booked in advance. Of the artists on
show, we particularly like the look of ELIZABETH STRATHs drawing, paint and stained
glass compositions, making imaginative use of traditional techniques and materials (at
the NICHOLSON BUILDING, FORRES) and PHILIPPA MITCHELLs work at KINLOSS CHURCH
HALL taking its inspiration from a communitys mixed and, at times, controversial attitude
towards Barnacle Geese (see below). More details at ndhornbayartsfestival.com
Before Findhorn, Mitchells Barnacle Geese studies can also
be seen at MIGRATION, an exhibition at THE IONA GALLERY in
KINGUSSIE from 0514 SEP. Exhibiting alongside her is LIZ HALL
who explores themes of migration and displacement in fairy tale-
like paintings, where characters move and relate with birds from
around the world - their seasonal paths linking cultures, and their
dreams narrating magical stories. Swallows feature heavily as
creatures surrounded by myth and legend.
Over at KILMORACK GALLERY theres an excellent exhibition of EIGHT SCULPTORS AND
THEIR DRAWINGS running until 13 Sep. And its a prestigious line-up featuring some of
Scotlands best in the shape of MARY BOURNE, HELEN DENERLEY, STEVE DILWORTH,
LEONIE GIBBS, LOTTE GLOB, WILL MACLEAN, GEORGE WYLLIE and particularly the late,
great GERALD LAING.
This month also sees IG:LU in CHURCH ST bringing you new work from one of the spaces
favourite artists, ROBBIE MACINTOSH. His exhibition, NICE, runs from 22 SEP for a
fortnight, MonFri 11am4pm.

One of the most interesting recent developments in the world of theatre, both commercially and
creatively has been its increasing utilisation of the cinematic medium. Its been most notably
successful with the NATIONAL THEATRE ENCORE project, screening theatrical productions to
screens throughout the country, which means that this month we get the chance to see both
GILLIAN ANDERSON in Tennessee Williams A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (16 SEP) and
the wonderful HELEN MCCRORY in the title role of MEDEA, a critically acclaimed show giving
Euripides work a contemporary setting. Its on from 2830 SEP. And the Royal Shakespeare
Company are getting in on the, er, act as well, with TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA beamed
live to EDEN COURT on 03 SEP, the rst time the play has been performed on the RSC stage
in 45 years.
The mighty NICK CAVE will also be popping up on the screen for what is cryptically called a
Live Satellite Event after the 17 SEP screening at EC of 20,000 DAYS ON EARTH, in which
directors Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard fuse drama and documentary by weaving a cinematically
staged day in Caves life with never-before-seen verit observation of his full creative cycle.
Its a ne month for documentaries about cultural icons as you can also see the lauded I AM
DIVINE [1] (EC, 18 SEP), a remarkable portrait of the late drag queen actor made into some
sort of superstar by John Waters in lms like POLYESTER, which is screened immediately
afterwards. And tickets for the double bill are just 8.
Attention at the moment is focused on the anniversary of the First World War and the BFI have
put together a timely programme called A NIGHT AT THE CINEMA IN 1914 (EC, 1317 SEP)
which mixes Path newsreels, comedy and all sorts of entertainment including an episode of
The Perils Of Pauline. After which you can presumably go promenading with your sweetheart
before departing for The Somme.
MARION COTILLARD is always worth watching and good things have been said about her
in TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT which, considering its a yarn about a woman with a weekend
to convince colleagues to give up a bonus so she can keep her job, must be one heck of a
performance.
Woody Allen went through a bit of a creative slump a decade ago, but in recent years his work
has been consistently entertaining, which is just as well since hes rigorously sticking to his
lm a year routine. His latest, MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT, stars COLIN FIRTH and EMMA
STONE in a rom-com about a magician exposing a sham psychic.
Were also looking forward to THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY [2] with Helen Mirren starring
in a curious tale about an Indian restaurant opening in a village in the South of France. Its
directed by Chocolats Lasse Hallstrm, so expect thatll make you want to get on the Eurostar
the moment the lm nishes

NAIRN BOOK & ARTS FESTIVAL, but there are also a few sessions aimed specically at kids.
On 02 SEP at NAIRN LIBRARY theres one of the popular BOOKBUG get-togethers suitable for
pre-school children where you can enjoy stories, songs and rhymes with your toddler and at
NAIRN COMMUNITY & ARTS CENTRE on 06 SEP there are a series of classes in STOP-MOTION
ANIMATION for three different age groups ranging from P4-S6. One of the highlights for many
will be the appearance of Artie Trezise, co-founder and performer with the legendary SINGING
KETTLE, who is back on the road with his exciting new show, TARTAN TALES. His interactive
show at SEAMENS HALL, NAIRN on 06 SEP (at 12.30pm for Nursery to P3 and 2pm for
P4-P7) is alive with traditional tales, tricks, sing-along action, and kids helping on stage - all

The FINDHORN BAY ARTS FESTIVAL also has a couple of interesting attractions for the
whole family, particularly their HOUSE OF AUTOMATA shows from 26-28 SEP at the JAMES
MILNE INSTITUTE in FORRES. In OLD DOGS, NEW TRICKS youll meet Nancy, the glamorous
seamstress aged 110, but still a modern girl and Boris, the cuddly vodka drinking bear, former
favourite of Russian Foreign Minister Gromyko. They are joined by circus performers, trained
rabbits, magicians, the singing birds of Alexandria, miniature grottos, performing monkeys,
strongmen and a whole army of mechanical marvels. The exhibition is presented by Michael
and Maria Start, proprietors of The House of Automata, famous around the world for its
sensitive restoration work for collectors, auction houses and museums. They will be on-hand
to discuss the secrets of their craft and demonstrate the intricate clockwork mechanics that
give life to their fantastic and unique collection of automata.

THE PHANTOM BAND, who play MAD HATTERS
on 24 SEP are one of the most welcome visitors
to these parts, with their gigs (either as a band
or solo shows from the mighty Rick Redbeard)
consistently thrilling. From their startling debut
album Checkmate Savage back in 2009 to their
latest, Strange Friend, theyve always managed to
transcend the indie dullness of their peers through
imaginative inuences and a gloriously unshackled
creativity. No surprise then that when we asked
them for some favourite songs, they came up with
the nest selection ever featured on these pages.

Summer may be hurtling to a close, but there are still a load of appealing
festivals vying for your attention kicking off with the pun-titled (if a month out)
JOCKTOBERFEST at BLACK ISLE BREWERY on 05 & 06 SEP. As well as beer
and bratwurst theres a line up that includes VICTORIAN TROUT CONSPIRACY [1],
LITTLE MILL OF HAPPINESS, THE WHISKYS and LIONEL.
For many, this month is all about LOOPALLU, which celebrates its tenth anniversary
on 26 & 27 SEP in Ullapool. This years line up has yet to be announced which
suggests that the organisers are condent that those whove enjoyed the
celebratory atmosphere that takes over the town during the fest will be back
on the strength of that alone. Watch out for news: whatsonhighlands.com and

If you like your music a bit more traditional, youll no doubt be eagerly awaiting this
years BLAS (various venues, 0513 SEP) with its aim of celebrating Gaelic music
and culture throughout the Highlands. As always it takes place all over the area,
from major conurbations to tiny villages, with highlights including performances by
DOUGIE MACLEAN, SALT HOUSE, RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS and Cape Breton Fiddler

Its a great month for folk fans with the always welcome appearance of one of the
genres nest exponents, KATE RUSBY [3] at EDEN COURT on 19 SEP. Putting
the Johnny-come-latelys to shame, she manages to stay true to the integrity of folk
with her glorious voice and emotive songs, aided by some of the nest musicians
around. And for an Americana angle on proceedings, you cant do better than check
out THE STRAY BIRDS (EDEN COURT, 06 SEP), whove taken the States by storm
and were one of the hits at this years Celtic Connections. Theres an unexpected
new direction to the work of SHARON CORR [4] (IRONWORKS, 14 SEP) as her
latest album draws on inspiration from songwriting of the early seventies, but
shell undoubtedly nd time to lob in all the hits too. While shes gone global her
countryman NATHAN CARTER, who plays EDEN COURT on 20 & 21 SEP is still
best known in his native Ireland where hes regarded as the most exciting young
country talent around. Hes joined by Lisa Stanley, daughter of the legendary Irish
singer Maisie McDaniels.
On the indie tip, EMBRACEs outdoor shows at EVANTON WOODLANDS (26-27
SEP), the always excellent TWILIGHT SAD [5] at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 13
SEP and long-time ICA favourites THE PHANTOM BAND [6] at MAD HATTERS on
24 SEP should all be well worth getting along to, while its nice to see the return of
one of Inverness most talented bands as IAIN MCLAUGHLIN & THE OUTSIDERS

Summer may be hurtling to a close, but there are still a load of appealing
festivals vying for your attention kicking off with the pun-titled (if a month out)
JOCKTOBERFEST at BLACK ISLE BREWERY on 05 & 06 SEP. As well as beer
and bratwurst theres a line up that includes VICTORIAN TROUT CONSPIRACY [1],
LITTLE MILL OF HAPPINESS, THE WHISKYS and LIONEL.
For many, this month is all about LOOPALLU, which celebrates its tenth anniversary
on 26 & 27 SEP in Ullapool. This years line up has yet to be announced which
suggests that the organisers are condent that those whove enjoyed the
celebratory atmosphere that takes over the town during the fest will be back
on the strength of that alone. Watch out for news: whatsonhighlands.com and

If you like your music a bit more traditional, youll no doubt be eagerly awaiting this
years BLAS (various venues, 0513 SEP) with its aim of celebrating Gaelic music
and culture throughout the Highlands. As always it takes place all over the area,
from major conurbations to tiny villages, with highlights including performances by
DOUGIE MACLEAN, SALT HOUSE, RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS and Cape Breton Fiddler

Its a great month for folk fans with the always welcome appearance of one of the
genres nest exponents, KATE RUSBY [3] at EDEN COURT on 19 SEP. Putting
the Johnny-come-latelys to shame, she manages to stay true to the integrity of folk
with her glorious voice and emotive songs, aided by some of the nest musicians
around. And for an Americana angle on proceedings, you cant do better than check
out THE STRAY BIRDS (EDEN COURT, 06 SEP), whove taken the States by storm
and were one of the hits at this years Celtic Connections. Theres an unexpected
new direction to the work of SHARON CORR [4] (IRONWORKS, 14 SEP) as her
latest album draws on inspiration from songwriting of the early seventies, but
shell undoubtedly nd time to lob in all the hits too. While shes gone global her
countryman NATHAN CARTER, who plays EDEN COURT on 20 & 21 SEP is still
best known in his native Ireland where hes regarded as the most exciting young
country talent around. Hes joined by Lisa Stanley, daughter of the legendary Irish
singer Maisie McDaniels.
On the indie tip, EMBRACEs outdoor shows at EVANTON WOODLANDS (26-27
SEP), the always excellent TWILIGHT SAD [5] at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 13
SEP and long-time ICA favourites THE PHANTOM BAND [6] at MAD HATTERS on
24 SEP should all be well worth getting along to, while its nice to see the return of
one of Inverness most talented bands as IAIN MCLAUGHLIN & THE OUTSIDERS
[7] launch their new EP at IRONWORKS on 12 SEP.

Having achieved massive worldwide fame with her
siblings, SHARON CORR, who plays IRONWORKS on
14 SEP, is proving to be just as successful as a solo
performer. We caught up with her to nd out what to
expect from her forthcoming show:
I So, youre coming up to Inverness. Have you been to
the Highlands before? Looking forward to it? Yes Ive
been to the Highlands many times - sooo beautiful - cant
wait!
I How different is it when youre making records on your
own rather than as part of a band? Do you get dictatorial
in the studio? I like being the boss! Face with stuck-out
tongue and winking eye it suits me - I know what I want, but I
also know when someone knows better than me - thats why
I asked Mitchell Froom to produce this album - I have been
a huge fan of Mitchells work forever - I loved particularly
Woodface by Crowded House. He is an incredibly organic
producer and so musical. Music has to touch you, you need
to hear the players playing the singers singing and feel the
magic between them. This is what Mitchell achieves every
time and I love it! Its also quite quirky and takes twists and
turns that you dont expect - just like life.
I How disciplined are you about your writing? Do you
carry a notepad with you? I make notes on my phone and
iPad all the time - little phrases I see and think of. Writing
is a constant rhythm just like life - there is inspiration all
the time - good or bad, sad or joyful whatever it is if I am
touched by it I write it down
I If you could have written any song in history what
would it have been? I never look at it that way - I am so
grateful for all those amazing songs written by other people
that give us such hope and inspiration and such solace.
I only ever aspire to write the greatest song I can and am
very happy when people tell me it helped them or touched
them in some way.
I What are the most important things in your life?
My family and my music.
I Any unfullled ambitions? I have a constant running
ambition of just being better at what I do all the time it is a
great motivation - I love music and performance more and
more - as if increase of appetite had grown by what it fed on
I When was the last time you were starstruck? Im
always shy with famous people! My sisters and I met
Johnny Depp and couldnt speak - started laughing and
giggling like little girls, he asked us where we were from
and we couldnt remember! Yikes!
I Got any secret talents that people dont know about?
Love cooking but am equally capable of sunken cakes and
inedible disasters! God loves a trier- as they say.

MICHAEL PALIN [1] is ofcially The Nicest Man On Earth. And while hes recently
been busy helping pay off John Cleeses alimony bill with the Pythons reunion, you
sense that hell perhaps be best remembered for sanguine globetrotting. Both his
travel and his comedy are covered in his latest, hugely entertaining volume of diaries
and hell be elaborating on them at EDEN COURT on 14 SEP at an evening wittily
titled TRAVELLING TO WORK. Expect lots of anecdotes from a life very well lived all
vividly illustrated with a special selection of photos and footage shot during the eight
TV travel series that began with Around The World in Eighty Days. Just as long as he

those appearing at the eleventh NAIRN BOOK AND ARTS FESTIVAL taking place

elding questions about The Big Vote, although having seen her on Celebrity Bake
Off, were rather hoping shes been keeping up her culinary talents and brings loads
of cakes. Also appearing in the festivals best ever line-up are television presenter
and author SALLY MAGNUSSON , award winning crime writers MALCOLM MACKAY,
ANN CLEEVES and ALEX GRAY, Highlands based travel writer KAPKA KASSABOVA
, gardening expert KENNETH COX, and Irish author NUALA N CHONCHIR. More

Also providing a wealth of attractions is the FINDHORN BAY ARTS FESTIVAL which
runs from 2428 SEP. As well as musicians like EDDI READER [3] and CHARLIE
MCKERRON the ve-day bonanza promises to bring together artists from Moray,
Scotland and beyond to entertain audiences with a vibrant and dynamic programme,
including premiere performances and exhibitions, outdoor theatre and live music, ne-
art and photography, talks, tours, tastings and lots of free activities which aim to
make the Festival accessible to all. These include Culture Day, which will see Forres
town centre come alive with buskers, drummers, walk about performers, dancers,

CLUBS CHARITY MARKETS MUNICIPAL TALKS
Homecoming Scotland 2014 is a year-long initiative designed to showcase all thats great about
Scotland - and whilst up until now the focus has been to the south of us, this month sees the
start of a two month focus on our area - with the arrival of the HIGHLAND HOMECOMING a two
month Festival which runs from 01 SEP31 OCT, before gliding seamlessly into the Inverness
Winter Festival.
Among the highlights of the Highland Homecoming will be the launch of a brand new event at Fort
George - THE HIGHLAND MILITARY TATTOO which will take place from 0407 SEP. The following
weekend is one of the most event-ful (sorry-Ed) weekends the Highlands have ever seen with
the Highland Clans in Inverness for a Torchlight Procession through the Highland Capital on the
evening of 12 SEP and the start of 3 days of Heavy action down at Bught Park as the MASTERS
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS returns with a world record number of competitors -almost 200
Heavies aged 40 years and over from 13 countries. The Masters weekend will also feature the
KIRKING OF THE COUNCIL; the climax of the 2014 BLAS FESTIVAL and Shintys CAMANACHD
CUP FINAL; before ending with what could be the most You Tube viewed event of the year -
The TOMATIN TOSS - an attempt at the Guinness world simultaneous caber tossing record
sponsored by Tomatin Distillery will feature almost 200 cabers ying through the air at Bught
Park. The record currently stands at 52 set last month in Canada so expect celebrations
lasting long into the night.
Following the HIGHLAND TRADITIONAL STRENGTH FESTIVAL and the LOCH NESS MARATHON,
the Homecoming Highland Festival will climax in October with the ROYAL NATIONAL MD which
will feature performances around Inverness City Centre and showcase all the aspects of Gaelic
language, culture, history and heritage at local, national and international levels.
All in all a busy couple of months ahead which will hopefully establish a truly Highland sense of
self and celebration. Reason to come home indeed.

auction. They depicted 1960s Chicago but unable to get
a thorough look at its contents he took a gamble and
purchased the lot for around $400. The photographs

John made it his mission to re-construct her archive
and today Vivien is now considered one of the 20th

Energy And Micro-renewables) Centre provides training and
information in renewable energy and sustainable construction,
upskilling those working in the sector and adding value to
modern apprentices. Our specialist Architectural Technology
programmes engage students in real-life projects and
enable progression from HNC through to BSc (Hons). The
colleges research capacity is growing at pace and makes
a signifcant contribution to the universitys research base.
The Rivers and Lochs Institute and Centre for Remote and
Rural Studies conduct research in, for example, freshwater
fsheries, sustainable forestry, bioenergy and rural policy.
Research development will be further supported by a
bespoke Research Hub at the new campus which will provide
the focus for collaborative research across the Highlands and
Islands.
CAPITAL EQUIPMENT
Through the Energy Skills Partnership (ESP), the college has
industry standard pneumatic hydraulics equipment, a motor
generator and power electronic equipment which underpin
the delivery of a range of programmes for the energy industry.
A state-of-the art forestry simulator at the Scottish School
of Forestry, provided in partnership with the Forestry
Commission, enables students and industry partners to
access training on forestry machinery and equipment under
simulated conditions.

BALL ATHLETIC COMBAT EXTREME RACING
Big sporting events this month. And we mean big. The MASTERS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
(1214 SEP) and the HIGHLAND TRADITIONAL STRENGTH FESTIVAL (21 SEP) will be bringing
the Goliaths to town as part of Homecoming. And you can read more about them on P25.
If endurance is more your bag, youll be geared up for one of the highlights of the distance
running year, not just in the Highlands, but with a reach verging on the global, in the form of
the LOCH NESS MARATHON [1] on 28 SEP. Readers of Runners World have voted the event,
which has been going since 2002 as one of the best three marathons in Britain and the number
of competitors grows year by year. Were making our yearly request for BBC Sport to eventually
see t to cover it live and encouraging the rest of you to either go and cheer the runners or take

After all that running about it might be time to sit back and watch other people do sport really
well. And theres no better way to do that than by getting along to SNOOKER LEGENDS [2] at
EDEN COURT on 16 SEP, a night that more than lives up to its billing. Seven times Crucible
champion, STEPHEN HENDRY is rated by some as the greatest ever and six times nalist
JIMMY WHITE is quite rightly titled as the Peoples Champion so this is a once in a lifetime
chance to see, and meet, The King of the Crucible and The Whirlwind go head to head.
DENNIS TAYLOR will be on hand to provide expert analysis and perform trick shots and leading
referee MICHAELA TABB, from Dunfermline, will ofciate. Snooker loopy and then some.
The world of shinty and its attendant competitions is never the easiest to fathom, but we
know a prestigious event when we see one and 13 SEP marks the CAMANACHD CUP FINAL
at BUGHT PARK. This is shintys biggest day out, attracting thousands of spectators with
Kingussie up against either Skye or Glenurquhart. Well worth getting along to.

Plenty of theatrical treats this month with the moist scintillating appearing to be SCOTTISH
BALLETs double bill of THE CRUCIBLE WITH TEN POEMS [1] at EDEN COURT on 30 SEP and
01 OCT. The former is inspired by Arthur Millers award-winning 1953 play about the Salem
Witch Trials, at the time smartly relevant to McCarthyesque post-war paranoia and misogynist
attitudes to female sexuality, yet just as powerful today. Itll be interesting to see how its
themes are explored through the medium of dance. Ten Poems meanwhile is a recording of
Dylan Thomas works of that name read by Richard Burton, the man who more than any other
will always be associated with the voice of the poet. Themes of lost innocence, death and
nostalgia for childhood are brought to life in ten vignettes choreographed by the extraordinary
Christopher Bruce.
Literature is also invented anew in MACBETH-THE REMIX [2] at BRODIE CASTLE from 24-
28 SEP. Part of the Findhorn Bay Arts Festival, this production with Arts In Motion sees
Shakespeares classic story reworked & remixed, with stunning video projections and
re sculptures, dramatic live action and music, and a strong community involvement from
pipers to martial artists. Plus an especially formed remix choir and live band, all staged in
the grounds of Brodie Castle in the shadow of the Macbeths Hillock. Info and booking at

Scotlands rather more contemporary heritage is explored by the excellent actor David Hayman
in PITILESS STORM at EDEN COURT on 7 SEP. Just a week before the referendum this is
a timely study of a left-wing trade unionist enduring a crisis of conscience as he is forced to
question his political and moral beliefs in the face of a sea-change in his countrys political life.
Equally timely as we commemorate a century since the world-changing events of 1914 is
OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR! [3] at FLORIANS LITTLE THEATRE from 09-13 SEP. The musical,
originally developed by the groundbreaking Joan Littlewood in 1963 and later made into a lm,
views the horrors of The Great War through the savage humour of an end-of-the-pier show and
remains one of the most powerful satires ever created in British theatre.
It might provide an interesting companion piece to Pip Uttons one-man show CHURCHILL [4]
at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 03 SEP, a follow up to his last show, Adolf, about, well, guess.
A word too for the welcome return of the lunchtime pub theatre PLAY PIECES season, based this
time round at THE PHOENIX in Inverness and THE DROUTHY COBBLER in ELGIN. This years
programme kicks off with THE RHUM PLANTS, an entertaining drama set in the backbiting
world of botanical research (yes, really!) in the 1940s. Its in Elgin on 05 SEP and Inverness
the next day.

Mr Em cient and the youandme guy
Another of those adverts where they
claim a high percentage of a very small
number of people like something
has caught my eye. I was probably
watching ITV3, or ITV cop-show as it
should be known - what can I say I
like detective dramas .. mostly I like
to read the book rst then spend an
hour and a half criticizing the director
for getting it all wrong.

The advert was most probably for
a hair care product, I wasnt really
paying that much attention, not until
they said that 75 percent of those
surveyed agreed that the product
was the next best thing to sliced
bread .. or whatever. Thats when I
checked, as is my want, the survey
size - its always written in tiny font
along the bottom of the screen,
and now with the wonders of hi-
denition you can sometimes read
it. The survey size in this instance
was, Im pretty certain, 51. So
many questions came to mind, not
the least of which was .. Surely 75%
of 51 cant be a whole number? It
isnt I checked .. its 38.25 - they
somehow managed to get the
opinion of a quarter of a person! I
suppose its more likely their survey
found that 38 of 51 people liked
the product but then that came out
to 74.5 percent and they thought
a nice round number would better
serve their purposes. My question
though is, why didnt they stop after
asking 50 people their opinion?
That makes the maths nice and
easy you just double your answer
to get a percentage .. and if your
doubling a whole number theres no
way you can get anything other than
another nice, round whole number
- no embarrassing half or quarter
persons anywhere in the equation!

It like to imagine the scene in the
ofce where the survey was done.
Theres one chap, terribly keen to
been seen as efcient and another
whos more like the rest of us. The
one whos like us goes off to make
a nice coffee before he gets down
to making the phone calls .. whilst
the efcient one, keen to get on
with things, gets on with things.
Eventually coffee guy sits down with
his delicious hot latte and picks up
the phone. Seconds later crazy-keen
guy shouts out done it! .. thats
me called the 50 people I have
their results here. Oh says you-
and-me guy Ive called one person
- now weve got 51 answers. A
philosophical argument ensues
and of course Mr Efciency wins,
reasoning theres no way they can
simply discard one result for the
sake of easy maths - what if that
guy who writes in the ICA found out?
- hed tear us apart!.
But why didnt they just carry on
surveying until they got to 100
people? Well that would have been
lazy guys job, because Mr Efcient
might have been crazy keen to get
on with it, but thats just because
it was a Friday and he wanted to

lt has not been often in ny 1J
years of reviewing restaurants for
lCA that we have decided to take
on a cafe and give it a review but
then Mountain Cal in Avienore
appears to be not your average cafe.
What is it that draws people fron
far and wide - and even has then
regularly queuing down the narrow
stairs for nore than half an hour on
busy days! l would guess that it is
not the location, because although
you nay be forgiven for thinking
that sonewhere calling itself
'nountain' cafe would be nestled
in anongst the glorious Cairngorn
nountains, it is in fact above an
outdoor clothing store on the nain
drag. Handy for parking but not so
spectacular that it is worth queuing
for. However once you do reach the
top of this queue and are the next
lucky punter allowed through the
door, it is like being invited to |oin an
exclusive club and that is when the
nagic really begins.
Once upstairs the nane nakes
sense, look up, out of any window
and you will see the wonderful vista
of the Cairngorn nountains all
around and even on this beautiful
sunny day l could see patches of
snow, naking it feel wonderfully
exotic and alpineesque. Other than
that, it is a standard cafe, bright,
nodern, with the added bonus of
a balcony providing a lucky few
with outdoor tables. l really an still
none the wiser as to why l have
queued for Z0 ninutes to get into
a cafe when there are plenty of
then to choose fron on the high
street. lt isn't until l turn the corner
and see the counter, groaning with
showstopping cakes that l realise
there is sonething special going on
here. That view of the cake display
is alnost as breathtaking as the
nountain range outside.
They oher a breakfast nenu up
until 11.J0 an, then after that,
until closing at around 5pn you
can choose fron the lunch nenu.
They do oher an 'All Day Breakfast'
which has |ust about everything you
have ever dreaned of frying up for
breakfast the eggs are free range,
the neat is all locally sourced and the
bread freshly baked so it was very
tenpting - but we decided to go for
nore traditional luncheon fayre.
The cuisine is described as 'Scottish,
with a Kiwi twist' and the cafe
has strong connections with New
Zealand, giving it a nice unique
favour. For ny nain neal l had
Kiwi 5weet Corn Fritter 5tack.
The portion was pretty huge and
looked quite a conplicated dish
for ne to break down. The fritters
thenselves contained sweet corn,
red onion, courgette and kunara
(which l an told is a type of sweet
potato fron NZ), with fresh herbs.
They were such a tasty nouthful
on their own but the Z fritters were
sandwiched together by sour crean

to like about this dish though, the
cubes of spiced feta served on the
side were a wonderful addition
and that worked well with the sour
crean. The acconpanying salad was
also well above average.
My dining partner chose the 5piced
ked Lentil urger, served with
grilled cheddar, salad, red cabbage
slaw and seasoned fries. Now, l
like a big burger but l don't like it
when it is so cunbersone you can't
actually pick it up and bite into
it. The red lentil patty was freshly
nade, favoured but not too spicy
and unlike any other veggie burger
l have tried, which is a big plus
point. To top it all it was served in
one of those delicious brioche type
rolls, which are ny favourite. The
red cabbage slaw, which features
on quite a few of the dishes on the
nenu, was perfection. very hnely
chopped red cabbage and carrot,
and a super creany nayo - tip top.
The seasoned fries were the thing
that really got us going though,
sprinkled with hne herbs, they were
diherent and delicious. So also a
great dish, ny one conplaint again
being the sweet chilli sauce covering
the burger, ( l'n sure you can ask for it
to be left oh, if you are in the know).
Dessert. Well though they do oher
sone chilled desserts, again all hone
nade, it is the cakes that everyone
talks about so it is the cakes that
we go for. l have seen the pictures
on lnstagran of their fanous
Millionaire 5hortbread so have
already decided to have that before l
set foot in the place. lt is a good |ob l
have decided before l arrive and see
the choice in front of ne or l would
still be there now trying to decide
now. All are hand baked on the
prenises and there is sonething to
suit every diet, even those fussy no
gluten, no dairy folk. lt is tough luck
for the no sugar or chocolate brigade
thoughl The Millionaire Shortbread
here is legendary and it does not
disappoint. l have heard tales of it
being 10cn deep and a caranel
layer so vast you can get lost in it.
Well nine wasn't quite like that but
it was a nighty hne piece of hone
baking. The caranel was indeed
to die for and again a very decent
portion size. My dining conpanion,
after having overcone the
nountainous burger now felt ready
to conquer the equally nountainous
Mocha Cake which was well worth
the ehort. l like to think of nyself as
a pretty good hone baker but this
is baking on another level and the
tean are to be congratulated on the
variety and anbition of their baking.
l know fron past experience that
their Chocolate and Beetroot Cake is
worth crawling over hot coals for.
Do not go to the Mountain Cafe,
especially in the sunner nonths,
if you want a quick bite. This is a
place that you take your tine over.
The food is cooked to order, which
is great because you are not getting
any reheated nonsense, but it can
take a while and though the stah are
friendly and pretty eh cient, it still
takes quite a while to get served, but
believe ne, it's worth it.
So a great place, once you are are in.
lt has a laid back atnosphere despite
the busy ness all around you and
you are not rushed to nake way
for the folk on the stairs at all. The
enphasis is on fresh, locally sourced
food, cooked sinply and with a
touch of New Zealand fair.
ln the toilets l saw a notice saying
they have been short listed for the
Scottish Baking Awards (Z8th Sept)
in the Best Cafe category. With only
4 cafes on the short list well naybe
bring a book to read while you wait...
