Chapter 1 Introduction to Flying

-Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI)

- Inspectors for the production, operation and maintenance, and/or mods of aircraft in civil aviation.
-specialize in monitoring and inspecting the aviation system such as aircraft itself but also cabin safety,
aircraft parts safety, aircraft operation
-ASIs need to complete the training program at FAA Academy in Oklahoma
-FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam)
- team where they try to improve the safety of civil aviation
-reducing aircraft accidents
-Replaced from Aviation Safety Program
-Obtaining Assistance from the FAA
-go check the FAA.gov website and email or contact them through if you have any question
-FAA Reference Material
-all the stuff to educate student and advanced civil aviation pilots can educate themselves from here
-Its like how to fly an airplane for dummies
-Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM)
-guide that has basic flight information and ATC procedures for the aviation community
-AIM has health and medical facts, flight safety and a pilot/controller glossary and some safety, accident
and reporting of hazards.
Handbooks
-covers particular part in great detail
-hand book of certain model and make are developed by airplane manufacturer with approved FAA
ACs
-Advisory Circulars (ACs): single, uniform agency wide system that the FAA uses to delivery advisory
material to FAA customers
-helps clear up the confusion about the regulation
-Explain the requirements and limits of an FAA agent
-promoting safety operations
-3 parts to an AC number
1) first part of the number identifies the subject matter area of the AC and corresponds to the
appropriate 14 CFR
2) second part of the number beginning with the dash identifies the subject
3)third part of the number is a letter assigned by the originating office and shows the revision sequence
if an AC is revised
-the example AC number is AC 61-65E
-NOTAM (Notices to Airmen)
-contains current notices to airmen which is essential to the safety of flight.
-information that is temporary or not enough information that can be allowed to be permitted in
publication
-NOTAM is classified into two categories: NOTAM (D) or distant and Flight Data Center (FDC) NOTAM
-NOTAM (D) information provides all navigational facilities that are part of the NAS, public airports,
heliports, seaplane bases listed in the Airport/Facility Directory (A/FD)
-NOTAM (D) includes data for example, taxi closure, personnel and equipment near or crossing runways,
and airport lighting aids that will not affect instrument approach for example visual approach slope
indicator (VASI)
-FDC NOTAM contains information such as amendments to published Instrument Approach Procedure
(IAPs) and other aeronautical chart
-FDC NOTAM is also used for providing flight restrictions caused by natural disaster or large-scale public
event that might create air traffic congestion
- NOTAM can be viewed in printed form through FSS or The Pilot Web Site
Safety Program Airmen Notification System (SPANS)
-this is an online event notification system that provides timely and easy-to-assess seminar and event
information notification for airmen

Aircraft Types and Categories
Ultralight Vehicles
-it is considered vehicle and not aircraft because:
Used or intended to be used by single occupant
Used for recreation or sport purpose
Doesnt have airworthiness certificate
If unpowered weighs less than 155 pounds
If powered, weighs less than 254 pounds empty weight which is without safety devices or floats
Has a fuel capacity not exceeding 5 gallons
