Sitrep on Gaza August 25

, 2014

On the night of 7
th
July, 2014, the Israeli army launched a large military
operation on the Southern Districts (Gaza Strip). Israeli attacks have so far
included heavy aerial, ground and navy bombardments throughout the
Gaza Strip.
On August 10, 2014 ceasefire started for three days and later was
extended for another 5 days. On August 19
th
ceasefire was broken.

Up to August 25 (19:00 local time), the death toll has reached 2130
(M: 1643, F: 487) (Of which 577 children, 102 elderly), and over 11066
persons injured (M: 7573, F: 3493) (Of which 3374 children, 410 elderly),
according to the Palestinian Health Information Center in Gaza

established in the Palestinian Ministry
of Health in collaboration with WHO
and other international and local

closed, 16 ambulances were damaged, and 83 health personnel injured, 23 health personnel died

The Ministry of Health calls on national and international organizations to immediately address
the looming public health crisis by:

1) Supporting the provision of PHC and Public Health service, to ensure access to all including
internally displaced people; providing adequate supply of drugs required for prevention
and treatment of infectious and communicable disease, and serving chronic patients;
2) Restoring the electricity supply, water wells and sewage pumping capacity as a matter of
urgency;
3) Providing access to clean and safe water to all residents of Gaza;
4) Providing longer-term shelters for the tens of thousands of displaced persons whose
homes have been completely destroyed, until rebuilding is possible;
5) Restoring Gazas four evacuated hospitals, especially the Wafa rehabilitation hospital and
Al Durrah paediatric hospital, to operational capacity as soon as possible;
6) Providing adequate water & sanitation facilities in shelters for displaced persons;
7) Providing hygiene kits to displaced persons.

Immediate needs
Drugs and disposables (updated lists Attached)
Urgent need for psycho-tropic drugs, especially emergency drug kits to use for patients
with mental illness who have relapses and families in especially severe circumstances of
forced displacement, trauma and anxiety.
More than 24 medical equipments in different quantities (estimated cost $3 million) and
tens of spare parts (estimated cost $230,000) (updated list attached)


Urgently needed medical missions
In light of the current emergency situation in Gaza the following medical missions are urgently
needed:
Neurosurgery (cranial and spinal cord) specialists
Anesthesiologists
Plastic surgery specialists
War general surgery specialist
Advanced orthopedic specialists
Burn management specialists
Maxillofacial surgery specialists
Orthopedics surgery specialists
Vascular surgery specialists
ICU nurse specialists

On August 1, 2014
A medical delegation from MoH was able to reach
Gaza. The medical delegation consisted of 25
specialists (Surgery, Orthopedics, Vascular, and
Thoracic) and specialized nurses.
On August 6, 2014
A second delegation from MoH reached Gaza. 11
specialists (Surgery, Pediatric surgery, maxillofacial
surgery, Orthopedics, Anesthesia) and 10 ICU and
operations specialized nurses.

Urgent response:

MoH delivered 23 trucks full of drugs and medical supplies to Gaza in the first week of July.
MoH in coordination with ICRC delivered 500 blood units to Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza on
July 14, 2014.
MoH in coordination with ICRC delivered 5000 blood bags and around 2 pallets of
medications to Gaza on July 19, 2014.
MoH in coordination with ICRC delivered 500 blood units, 43 pallets of drugs, 33 pallets of
disposables and 4320 of blood banks to Gaza on July 25, 2014.
PRCS delivered 12 trucks full of drugs and medical supplies (worth about $1 million) on July
27, 2014. This was made possible with the generous fund from Saudi Arabia.
MoH in coordination with ICRC delivered 2500 blood units to Gaza on August 3, 2014.
