Task 4:

1. Why did you choose the text you are analysing?

I chose it because I have liked the band for a while and I think this song is really good
listening and I hadnt seen the video yet and was curious to see what it was like.

2. In what context did you encounter it?
I found Temples on iTunes one day and decided to listen to them, whereas the music video I
found when I was researching it for this task.

3. What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
I dont think it had much influence on my interpretation of the text because this was a new
watch for me. I have liked the song for a while so that was always going to be something
that I was going to enjoy and in regards to the video, as it was only essentially a
performance video there was nothing that I could dislike about it.

4. Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?
From the music side of things, because this is kind of a Psychedelic/Indie type of music, the
video itself really fits into the style of the band and what they seem to be about. In regards
to the music video genre, it being an Amplification video is completely spot on. It has the
right about of obscurity and simplicity. The camera movements, in the beginning, how they
pan to the next musician are very different to what Ive seen before so add to the idea of it
being an Amplification video.

5. To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
I dont think the video really stretched any conventions, it was nothing like I hadnt really
seen before. I found it to be a real treat for the eyes because I really loved the style of
everything in the mise en scene, but it certainly (for me) did not stretch any conventions.

6. Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
Answer above.

7. What sort of audience did you feel that the video was aimed at (and how typical was this of
the genre/style of music)?
Probably one that was just a fan of the band, there was nothing to indicate that it was aimed
at anyone in particular, it was just a celebration of the band and the music they have made. I
think this is quite typical of the genre because all these kinds of bands what to seem
nonchalant and carefree and that definitely is being given off in this video.

8. What sort of person does it assume you are?
It assumes that you are just here for the music, nothing else. You are here to appreciate the
band and what they do. It also assumes I think that you are aware to who they are
channelling, I would say that they give off an air of The Doors and bands of that era.

9. What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity?
I think it assumes that you come from quite a well-respected background and you have just
found a rebellious streak in you. I would say it assumes you are between the ages 17-28, or
older, people who are quite young and have the disposable income to be able to pay for
their gigs. Gender and Ethnicity are not really assumed at all throughout the video.

10. What interests does it assume you have?
I think it assumes that you are interested in older music and appreciate nostalgia, the video
seems quite old for it day and I feel as though it is trying to channel the great of the late 60s
and that youll be interested in that as well.

11. What relevance does the text actually have for you?
The text has some relevance to me because I just absolutely love the music, I feel connected
to music like this. I also love the video style as I like work that has an intricacy to it.

12. What knowledge does it take for granted?
I dont think it really takes any knowledge for granted, maybe that they behave that you are
almost not there. The fact that they turn from the camera a few times indicates that this
video and performance is just for them.

13. To what extent do you resemble the 'ideal reader' that the video seeks to position you as?
I think mainly just due to the fact that I really appreciate this kind of music so I think that
could possibly make me an ideal reader. I dont think this video really announces itself to
have an ideal reader, if you like the music it doesnt matter where you come from or what
you do. The music brings everybody that are fans together.

14. Are there any notable shifts in the video's style (and if so, what do they involve)?
No, not at all. The video looks continuously the same all throughout.

15. What responses does the video seem to expect from you?
It doesnt really seem to expect any kind of response. I think it expects you to become a fan
of the band after youve watched it because they really do become likable after youve
watched the video.

16. How open to negotiation is your response (are you invited, instructed or coerced to respond
in particular ways)?
You are definitely invited to watch the video, like I have said previously, the video is for the
band and you are just watching a portion of their brain.

17. Is there any penalty for not responding in the expected ways?
No, you just dont get to appreciate the music for what its for if you dont respond in the
expected ways.

18. To what extent do you find yourself 'reading against the grain' of the text and the genre?
I think it is possible to finding yourself reading against the grain however, it really is just a
pleasure to watch and it doesnt have to be looked at deeply to realise the brilliance that is
Temples.

19. How typical do you think this video is of Music Videos?
As typical as it could be, it is different in many ways however there is nothing completely
new that I have not seen before.
