The Honorable Edward Murray

Mayor of the City of Seattle
Seattle City Hall
600 Fourth Ave.
2nd Floor

Dear Mayor Murray;

Subject: Dedicated weekend Seattle Police Department foot patrols at the intersection of Broadway and
Pike.

On behalf of the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce and the many businesses located in the Broadway
and Pike intersection and the surrounding area, I am writing today with a request for dedicated Seattle
Police Department foot patrols at the Broadway and Pike intersections on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The Broadway and Pike intersection are the center point for what has become a thriving nightlife and
entertainment district. That energy brings opportunities as well as challenges. One of the challenges
faced by the security staff of the many nightlife venues is the population inux on Friday and Saturday
nights at and the fact that some of those in that inux may be unaware of the identity of the Hill as a
diverse place, encouraging difference and diversity. Adding alcohol to that mixture creates a potent
atmosphere.

As the area grows in population density and the nightclub venues grow in popularity we face some
challenges in maintaining a healthy, safe neighborhood. We believe and the nightlife venue staff and
ownership heartily agree - that dedicated foot beat ofcers at this junction (Broadway & Pike) during the
peak nightlife activity of Friday and Saturday would be a responsible, proactive solution. We anticipate
that the ofcers would cover whatever area is traditional from that center point. We are, however,
requesting dedicated, consistent ofcers on that beat to promote relationship building amongst the
nightclub venues and regular patrons. We know that consistent, dedicated ofcers are of enormous value
to an urban neighborhood like Pike and Pine.

We are justly proud of the Pike/pine corridor on Capitol Hill and believe that it deserves every ounce of
attention lavished on it from national media and urban planning experts. It is our job to steward that
vitality in a way that is safe and vibrant. We believe that this request is reasonable, justied and good for
Pike and Pine good for the City of Seattle.

We would be happy to discuss more with the Mayors ofce, City Council staff and Seattle Police
Department. We are able to make available nightclub venue owners and staff, as well as residents and
fellow business owners for further discussion

Thank you for your time,
