peace market 2012: overview
An event unlike any other you will find in New York City,
Peace Market draws over 1,300 influential young
professionals, an impressive line-up of celebrities and
notable dignitaries, and a significant media presence.

Peace Market features celebrity musical entertainment
and the hottest DJs as guests take a enchanting journey
through the tastes, sights, sounds, and smells of a Middle
Eastern and South Asian marketplace. Attractions include
a live music showcase, celebrity guest appearances, a VIP
reception, and a live auction.

Hors doeuvres featuring the flare and flavors of Middle
Eastern, North African, and South Asian cuisine- kabobs,
falafel, curries, baba ghanoush, flatbreads, samosas, and
pakora- will be passed, plated, and/or served from vendor
stations. Local restaurants will again square off in the 3
rd

annual Humus Taste-Off competition with celebrity
judges. In addition to a premium open bar, guests will
enjoy a specialty Peace cocktail, designed by a celebrity
mixologist.

In 2012, Peace Market will be held on Thursday, March 1
st

at the Metropolitan Pavilion Ballroom in New York City.
Event chairs Matt Jung and Grishma Parekh will lead an
impressive host committee of over 100 members.
Luxurious and elegant fabrics draped in a tent-like manner
create segmented areas for themed activities such as a Tea
Salon, a Spice Market, etc. Lounges with pillows, poufs, and
Moroccan-inspired tables provide comfortable seating.

Marketplace aromas- such as fresh fruits, crisp spices, and
open flame barbeques further lend to the ambience.
Strolling cultural entertainment include fire throwers,
traditional drummers and musicians, henna tattoo artists,
and more.
Peace Market is pleased to have Gotham Magazine/Niche Media and Alissa Neil PR as media sponsors this year.

SEEDS OF PEACE is a non-profit organization
dedicated to the pursuit of lasting peace in regions
of conflict. Our mission is to empower young
people with the understanding and skills needed to
lead the way towards a better and more peaceful
future, free from violence, hatred, and fear.

Since its inception in 1993, Seeds of Peace has
graduated over 5,000 teenagers from 25 countries
worldwide and has grown from a summer camp in
Maine into a year-round multi-faceted leadership
development and coexistence program.

INTERNATIONAL CAMP: Every summer, hundreds of
Middle Eastern, South Asian, and American teenagers
meet their historic enemies face-to-face at the
Seeds of Peace International Camp in Maine. Free
from the pressures and prejudices of their home
communities, participants learn more than just
leadership and coexistence skillsthey develop the
friendships and trust necessary to build lasting peace.

REGIONAL PROGRAMMING: When campers leave
Maine, they realize that their work as peacemakers is
just beginning. Though they will surely face many
challenges, including skepticism and hostility from
friends and family, these Seeds bravely pledge to
make the peace they saw at Camp become a reality
at home.

Through local workshops, advanced dialogue
sessions, local outreach efforts, community service
projects, regional seminars, and global summits,
Seeds of Peace provides a variety of opportunities for
graduate participants to build on their
transformational experience at Camp and to further
their development as leaders and advocates for
peace.
"Before coming to Camp, I was over-
patriotic. I would never digress from
my views of the other side. Despite
my will to stick to my views, I was
compellednot by any individual,
not by the Campbut by the
experience. I had to look at the
bigger picture. (Zain, Pakistan)
"One of the first things you learn at
Seeds of Peace is to listen. You have
discussions about the conflict, but you
also learn to live together and respect
people who have different views and
come from different backgrounds.
(Raya, Palestine)

"We are not idealistic youth with no
grasp on the real world, nor do we
have unrealistic visions of immediate
peace and reconciliation. We are an
army of peace-makers who support it
because we know the bite of
violence, the pain of losing so much.
(Mariam, Egypt)
"Teachers at my school asked us to
say the first word that crosses our
mind when we hear the word
'Palestinian'. Some said terrorists.
Some said neighbors. I said
'FRIENDS'. (Maayan, Israel)
"Let us avoid our egoism and put
aside what happened in the past. Let
us try to open a new page with the
people who we consider our enemies
and attempt to stop the violence and
look for a resolution, not for us, but
for the sake of the new generations.
(Hashem, Jordan)
