When lives are in the balance, every second counts. But
increasing traffc volumes and inattentive drivers increase
the dangers for the emergency services as they try to reach
the scene. Those who are prepared to risk their own lives
for others must be able to trust their vehicle completely.
And with BMW, they can do just that. The incorporation
of active and passive safety technologies minimizes the risk
to the emergency services in any circumstances, so they
can focus on getting the job done.
Dr Florian Hoffmann, paediatric emergency
doctor, Munich:
Our ambulances do around 45,000 kilometres a year,
and emergency response driving accounts for
20,000 kilometres of this. So its a real comfort to have
a vehicle we can rely on, like our BMW. Thanks to its
manoeuvrability and instant responses, we can weave

Whenever the vehicle is stationary for example,
at a red light the Automatic Start/Stop function
switches the engine off until it is needed again,
thereby saving fuel. A symbol displayed in the

10 BMWAuthority Vehicles Innovative technology 11
BMW has been setting the technological standards in
Authority Vehicles for over 50 years. To give just one recent
example, the introduction of BMW ConnectedDrive has
revolutionized what is possible with integrated online
services. For instance, it is now possible to fnd addresses
on the Internet (with Google Maps) and transfer these
directly to a navigation system as destinations.
The vital seconds that this saves the emergency services
could be the difference between the success and failure
of their mission.

Jens Hundhammer, unmarked police car driver:
In emergency-response driving, youre 15 times more
likely to have an accident. Many drivers are more
unpredictable, especially when were in an unmarked
car and suddenly switch our blue lights on. Thats
why its crucial we have a vehicle with equipment we
can depend on in any situation.
Googleservices.
With the Google Send to Car function,
optionally available with BMWAssist, you
can easily transfer addresses and the routes
that you have planned in Google Maps to
your vehicle. This data can then be loaded
into the navigation system at the push of
a button. And, when using Google Local
Search (Google Maps) with BMWOnline*,
you can also search for individual destinations
from inside your car. When route guidance
is activated, you can even view images of
your destination using Googles photo
sharing site Panoramio or discover your
surroundings using Google Street View.
BMW Head-Up Display.
The full-colour BMWHead-Up Display
projects relevant driving information directly
into the drivers feld of vision (limited visibility
when wearing polarised sunglasses),
thereby allowing the driver to always remain
focused on the road ahead. The display
shows information such as the current

information.
The history of BMW Authority Vehicles dates back to 1955, when
the legendary BMW501 and BMW502 went into service with the
Munich police force. These vehicles set new standards of operational
practicality the V8 versions produced 95 horsepower and had a
top speed of 160 km/h, both extremely impressive fgures for the time.
Ever since, BMWhas constantly worked in partnership with authorities
around the world to push back the boundaries of what is technically
possible.

BMWAuthority Vehicles Innovative technology 11
Authority vehicles and BMW are a classic
combination. In Germany, this goes back
to at least the 1960s and the TV show
Funkstreife Isar 12, where the cops
chased the bad guys in that legendary
BMW 501 ...
Dirk Buyken: Yes, that show about the two
Munich police offcers achieved a cult following
almost as soon as it frst aired. And that hasnt
changed especially not for those with a
passion for BMWcars and Authority Vehicles.
Which means, of course, I am obliged to
watch the show on DVD at regular intervals.
(He laughs.)
That was around 50 years ago... it marked
the beginning of a real success story,
didnt it?
Dirk Buyken: Absolutely. The Munich police
force didnt just drive BMW501s on TV.
Offcers were using the vehicle as long ago as
1955, as they offered a unique combination of
speed, manoeuvrability, responsiveness and, in
particular, reliability. Soon after, BMWAuthority
Vehicles were being driven by highway patrols
and by the fre brigade and before long, they
were being used outside Bavaria too.
So a lot of experience lies behind
BMW Authority Vehicles?
Dirk Buyken: That is one of the keys to their
success. From the very beginning, BMW had
a close relationship with all the agencies that
ordered our vehicles. And we have built on this
relationship: the experiences of police offcers,
fre fghters and paramedics have always fed
into the development of our Authority Vehicles.
This relationship remains as strong as ever
today. Every time one of our vehicles goes into
action, drivers can feel the benefts of over
half a centurys experience.

A PERFECT,
TAILOR-MADE
FIT.
How and where are the various
components of Authority Vehicles
assembled?
Dirk Buyken: For the BMW 3 Series and
5 Series, which we produce for our major
customers, we make the specifc equipment
needed for Authority Vehicles somewhere
that we can be sure the strictest quality
standards already apply: namely, on the regular
assembly line. There are also a couple of
special workshops available for this purpose.
This means that the control units, cabling,
signalling system, radio wiring and aerials in
BMW 3 Series and 5 Series Authority Vehicles
are built in at the factory, for a perfect, tailor-
made ft. Special requests, and the ftting out
of BMW X3 and X5 Authority Vehicle models,
is handled by the retroftters, who have
extensive experience of working with BMW.
Stringent tests are also undertaken here
to ensure BMW quality standards are met.
Its no wonder that BMW Authority
Vehicles are in demand around the
world then ...
Dirk Buyken: Yes, thats why traffc offenders
in parts of Africa and Asia, as well as in Europe,
have trouble getting away from the police
because BMW Authority Vehicles are in use
there too! (He laughs.) But seriously, our
decades of experience in this sector, our
one-stop service, the seamless integration
of development, production and sales,
the guaranteed BMW quality standards and
excellent aftersales service are valued by
customers worldwide. One thing is clear:
thanks to our integrated solutions, our customers
dont just get a perfect Authority Vehicle
they get a vehicle thats unmistakably BMW
as well.
WHEN IT
COMES TO
PERFORMANCE
AND EFFICIENCY,
THERE
CAN BE NO
COMPROMISES.
Who at BMW is responsible for the
development of new Authority Vehicles?
Dirk Buyken: You have to understand that our
Authority Vehicles are in use 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. The police force, ambulance
service and fre brigade understandably
have very high standards when it comes to
performance, reliability and effciency, there
can be no compromises. To exploit their full
potential, development of our Authority Vehicles
comes under the remit of our BMW M division.
A core team of engineers there works on
adapting vehicle components to our customers
requirements, while ensuring seamless
compatibility with the vehicle as a whole, and
especially its safety equipment, standard
bodywork and electrical systems. Of course,
everything is exhaustively tested to ensure
it meets the rigorous standards of our
engineers and as such is worthy to carry
the BMW badge.
I assume the same high quality standards
also apply to the production process?
Dirk Buyken: Of course! Here too, we beneft
from the specifc experience both of the
BMW plants in Munich and Dingolfng and of
our external partners. Whats more, the
collaboration between our development team
in Munich and Dingolfng and specialist
retroftters, who BMW has a longstanding and
very close working relationship with, has
reached a very high standard. Everyone knows
exactly what they have to do.
Dirk Buyken has been head of product
management for BMWAuthority Vehicles
since 2010, and he knows the needs
of the emergency services inside out.

The BMW 5 Series is still ahead of the game and the
emergency services will beneft more than most from its unique
attributes. For example, diesel engines like that found in the BMW 520d
set new benchmarks in their class, combining extremely low fuel
consumption with instant throttle responses. This is made possible by
an array of innovative BMW EffcientDynamics technologies. And the
BMW 5 Series also boasts very low maintenance costs to go with its
unrivalled fuel effciency.
When concentration and coolness under pressure are required, theres
no better environment to be in than the driver-focused cockpit of the
BMW 5 Series. Optional Integral Active Steering improves manoeuvrability
and directional stability, while the optional Head-Up Display projects
key information into drivers feld of vision so they never have to take
their eyes off the road. And anyone looking for a vehicle that combines
usability and versatility will quickly fnd the BMW 5 Series, with its
various loading options and large carrying capacity (made possible by

The versatile BMW X3 was made for demanding assignments
on any kind of terrain. Innovative technologies such as the BMW xDrive
all-wheel drive system ftted as standard help to keep the driver in
control of any situation. And the interior combines excellent visibility
(thanks to its low window line and raised seating position) with
maximum fexibility.
The BMW X3 also sets a positive environmental example. Thanks to its
multi-award-winning BMW EffcientDynamics technology, its
performance is better than ever, while fuel consumption and emissions
have both been further reduced. The eight-speed automatic
transmission with Steptronic is combined in the BMW X3 for the frst
time with the Automatic Start/Stop function, further enhancing
fuel economy without compromising the trademark BMW driving
responses.
A TRUE ALLROUNDER

The BMW X1. Speed, versatility, responsiveness and the ability
to achieve maximum effect with minimal ressources: this is what is
required of the emergency services when the pressure is really on.
They are also the qualities that distinguish the BMW X1. The BMW
TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder in-line petrol and diesel engines combine
high performance with outstanding fuel economy. The seating position
is high, but the centre of gravity is low. And the 40 : 20 : 40 split folding rear
seat ensures a highly fexible interior. The BMW X1 no job is too tough.

DRIVING DYNAMICS A KEY SAFETY FEATURE
EFFORTLESS PERFORMANCE
IN EVERY SITUATION.
Every BMW is built to deliver uncompromising driving dynamics,
combined with maximum fuel effciency. All our development efforts
focus on this goal, and virtually every technical component of every
car helps to achieve it. But not only does this create a unique driving
experience, it is also a crucial asset in terms of safety, which is
obviously of great beneft to the emergency services. Because the
feeling that you are in control of every situation is key to that
unmistakable BMW driving experience.
When every second counts, it is vital that you can rely on the performance
and responsiveness of the engine right across the rev range. A vehicles
acceleration can be crucial to whether it reaches an incident in time.
Equally as important in critical situations are the precision of the
suspension, agile handling, direct and involving feedback, smooth gear
changes and outstanding braking performance: and in all these areas,
there is no match for a BMW.
BMW 530d.
All the engines found in BMW Authority Vehicles are economical with fuel, yet
still produce copious amounts of power. A particularly impressive example is the
BMWTwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line diesel engine of the BMW530d. This
highly responsive engine makes extensive use of aluminium to minimize weight,
and is ftted with a maintenance-free particulate flter.
The 190-kilowatt (258-horsepower)* output of the 3.0-litre engine in the BMW530d
Touring powers the car from 0 to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds, while maximum torque
of 560 newton-metres ensures it pulls hard right across the rev range.
BMWBluePerformance, a technology that signifcantly reduces nitrogen oxide
emissions, is a standard option.
xDrive.**
This intelligent all-wheel drive systemfromBMWcan
handle even the most treacherous road conditions.
Whenever xDrive detects any oversteer or understeer,
it adjusts the distribution of engine torque between
front and rear axles within a fraction of a second to
ensure the best possible traction.
Integral Active Steering.
For more agile handling and increased safety, optional
Integral Active Steering adjusts the stiffness of the
steering wheel and the steering ratio depending on the
vehicles speed. This helps to maintain exceptional
roadholding through even the toughest sequence of
corners.
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).
Sophisticated sensors continuously monitor the level
of grip and intervene as necessary in the engine
management and braking systems to maintain optimum
roadholding and traction. In this way, DSC ensures
drivers can keep complete control of their vehicle even
in adverse conditions.
Rear-wheel drive.
Performance and precision: the qualities that the
emergency services need to succeed are also the
qualities that defne a BMW. The rear-wheel drive
design is a key element in this. Not only does it help to
facilitate an even 50:50 weight distribution, it also
ensures the steering is unaffected by the drive train.
* Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions depend on the selected wheel and tyre size.
For further information please see pages 46-47.
** Optional on BMW3 Series, BMW5 Series and BMWX1, as standard on BMWX3 and BMWX5.

BMWX5 Security.
Security.
The BMWX5 Security offers class VR4 ballistic
protection (against blunt instruments and handguns of
up to .44 Magnum calibre, tested as per BRV 1999
guidelines), making it the ideal way to counter the threat
of street crime.
Security Plus.
The BMW X5 Security Plus offers class 6 ballistic
protection (tested as per VPAM-APR 2006 and
BRV 1999 guidelines), meaning it is also secure against
the worlds most widespread frearm, the AK-47.
High Security.
The BMW7 Series High Security safeguards high-
ranking offcials and corporate executives against
terrorist attacks with armour-piercing ammunition and
explosives. The vehicle as a whole meets the class VR7
ballistic protection standard (tested as per BRV 2009
guidelines). The non-transparent area, and many
components of the transparent area when installed,
comply with the requirements for class VR9 ballistic
protection (tested as per BRV 2009 guidelines).
BMWX5 Security Plus. BMW7 Series High Security.
OUTSTANDING VEHICLES
THAT DONT STAND OUT.
When it comes to undercover operations and security escort services,
unmarked BMW Authority and Security Vehicles are constantly setting
new standards. The special requirements that users have of these
vehicles are taken into account in the design and development of the
standard models, meaning the necessary modifcations are more easily
made and more effectively integrated. For example, using iDrive to
control radio and GPS systems not only improves concealment, it also
decreases installation costs (and the cost of deinstallation prior to resale).
With a range comprising the BMW X5 Security, the BMW X5 Security Plus
and the BMW 7 Series High Security, BMW offers a suitable solution
for all kinds of situations where a higher degree of mobile protection is
required.
www.bmw-security-vehicles.com
People who bear the greatest responsibilities
should be able to count on the corresponding level of
protection without having to sacrifce a unique driving
experience. And in both regards, the BMW7 Series
High Security sets new standards.
