Introduction
Computers have become a way of life in the classroom. Students have computers at home
and they are used to surfing the web. There are wonderful websites out there to help them
learn. These websites are mostly a FREE resource, which allows students to have fun while
learning. However, there are so many sites out there, many teachers struggle to find out which
websites to use.
During my time as a teacher, both a computer teacher and a classroom teacher, I have
amassed a large collection of tried and true websites. This e-book is a collection of these
websites, ready for you to use in your classroom to promote fun and engaging learning. I hope
that your students get as much out of these websites as mine do.

**Disclaimer all of these website links are valid and working, and all websites were free
to be used as described as of October 27, 2012. Some sites listed will have additional
resources available for a fee, but all resources described in this e-book will be free. I will re-
check all links every 3 months, but as the internet is an ever changing entity, a link here or

Managing and Organizing Websites for the Classroom

If technology is too time consuming to manage, it will easily fall by the wayside of the many
other things we as teachers have to do. Here are some tips to integrate websites into the
classroom as seamlessly as possible.
Tip #1: Model your expectations for students. Just like any other activity you want students
to work on independently, websites need to be modeled for students.
- If you dont want students to click off the specific link, tell them that up front.
Students will naturally click around a website, so be sure to tell them where they can
and cant go and what they should and shouldnt do.
- If students are sharing a computer, be sure to describe how you would like them to
share responsibilities.
- Consider having a recording sheet or using internet scavenger hunts, to keep
students accountable for their time on the computer.
Tip #2: Have your websites organized in a way that students can easily access them. If they
spend 15 of their 20 minutes typing in the website, their turn at the computer wasnt very
productive.
- Try using a website like http://www.ikeepbookmarks.com/or http://www.sqworl.com/
to organize your websites, and then make this link a favorite a hotlink on their
desktop so that they can get to it easily.
- You could also link these to your blog or use http://www.edmodo.com/so that they
could access the links at home and school.
Tip #3: Train students on what to do if technology fails. Unfortunately, there are days when
the internet doesnt work, the electricity goes out or the websites server is down. Rather than
wait for that to happen, have a contingency plan in place and teach kids about it before theres
an outage. This will help lessen the disruption when it does.
Web 2.0
There are many types of websites, but I will characterize the websites in this E-Book as
traditional websites and Web 2.0 websites. Traditional websites are the same every time
you visit them and are meant for you to receive information. Examples of traditional websites
are games, informational websites, and anything else on the web that doesnt ask for student
input. Web 2.0 websites are websites that require students to contribute to them, change
them, or use them to create a project. Below is a list of some of my favorite free Web 2.0
sites. Whenever a Web 2.0 site is listed in one of the website lists in this book, it will have a
(2.0) next to it to alert you that input is needed.

Great Web 2.0 Sites to check out:
www.wordle.net Make word pictures out of words of your choice.
www.edu.glogster.com Make online posters called glogs that include graphics, links and video.
www.edmodo.com Facebook for educators, great for assigning websites, quizzes, activities,
homework and generally interacting with students and parents.
www.storybird.com Create digital storybooks with site provided artwork.
www.wallwisher.com Create a wall with a discussion question and let students respond with
sticky notes.
www.voki.com Create a talking avatar from recordings of a students voice.
www.prezi.com Create an online presentation, view and share presentations with others.
http://docs.google.com Create a document that can be seen and/or edited by all the students
in a group, or a create a form where students answers are recorded into a spreadsheet.
www.edublogs.org Students can create and update blogs safely using this site.
Websites for Preschool Students
These websites are best suited for students from age 2-4. During this time, students should
be working on using a mouse and a keyboard to control the computer.

www.abcya.com The K section of this website has a lot of games that appropriate for
preschoolers. Here are some specific games to check out:
Create a Snowman
Counting Fish
Painting

www.starfall.com The ABCs section of this site is fabulous for preschools, with cute songs and
stories to help students learn their letters and phonics sounds.

www.pbskids.org This entire website has great educational games and videos based on familiar
characters, but some are more appropriate to different ages. Here are some of the sections
most geared to preschoolers:
Calliou
Sesame Street
Cat in the Hat

http://funschool.kaboose.com/preschool/ - Funschool is one of those sites that can be more
fun than school, but the preschool links are pretty good!
Websites for Primary Grades
be working on using a mouse and a keyboard to control the computer. They should be able to
scroll, double click and create capital letters and spaces on the computer.

www.starfall.com This is the best phonics website I have ever found. There are videos, easy
readers, and games that help students build reading skills. For students who are already
readers, the Im Reading section gives a good variety of books that can be read by the
student.

www.storylineonline.net This online story website presents a variety of celebrities reading
classic childrens literature to students via videos. Please note the videos stream through
YouTube, which may be blocked at various schools.

www.abcya.com This website has a variety of games, some are more fun than educational.
Here are some specific games that provide good educational activities:

Websites for Intermediate Grades
be able to scroll, double click, type, and easily maneuver a website. They should be learning
about internet safety and internet research

http://nlvm.usu.edu - Every math manipulative that you can find in a standard kit can be found
in an electronic form on this site. Here are two of my favorites to use with this age:

www.storybird.com (2.0) Create online storybooks with art provided by the site. Watch
students turn basic stories into longer, more complex stories as they are inspired by the art.

www.timeforkids.com News stories written by student reporters at a kids reading level,
information about countries around the world and more great for current event activities.

http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/ - Information, videos and news about animals and
countries around the world great start for a research site.

most geared to primary students:

Word Girl Cyber Chase

Math Websites
http://nlvm.usu.edu - Every math manipulative that you can find in a standard kit can be found
in an electronic form on this site. In addition, students get to use these manipulatives in new,
interesting ways. Here are two of my favorites:

http://resources.oswego.org/games - Oswego Math Games are all wonderful ways for students
to practice math concepts. Here are two of my favorites:
Math Magician
Give the Dog a Bone

www.eduplace.com/kids/mw: This site is more than just games, it also includes manipulatives,
brain teasers, an e-glossary, and a place to work on a data survey. Supported by Houghton
Mifflin, this website is sorted by grade level.

www.hbschool.com/hspmath/na/index.html: This site was developed by Harcourt School
Publishers, so if you have a Harcourt math series at your school, it will align very well with your
texts. However, no matter what your math adoption, the lessons and games are amazing
reinforcements for the kids.

www.coolmath-games.com This site has so many games, its crazy. While not every game is
completely educational, most are at least logic building games.

www.mathplayground.com: This site has tons and tons of really great games for tons of
different math concepts. In addition, there are video tutorials that walk kids through many
different math concepts and there are even interactive word problems.
Reading Websites
www.storylineonline.net This online story website presents a variety of celebrities reading
classic childrens literature to students via videos. Please note the videos stream through
YouTube, which may be blocked at various schools.

www.magictreehouse.com - If your students read the Magic Tree House books, they will love
this interactive website based on the stories, and theres even a page just for teachers, with
tons of resources to go with the books.

www.seussville.com - The official Dr. Seuss website has a ton of great games and activities, as
well as information about some of the coolest Seuss characters.

www.shelsilverstein.com/indexSite.html If you use Shel Silversteins poetry in your classroom,
you and your students will enjoy his official website, which has great games and printables.

www.mightybook.com - These are actually sample pages to a paid program, but I used them
repeatedly before I figured out they were samples. Each story stands alone and provides
students with a great, animated story experience.

http://www.bookadventure.com/home.aspx/ Kids can sign up for free accounts and take quizzes
on over 8,000 books. After passing a quiz, kids can earn points towards prizes.

www.starfall.com This is the best phonics website I have ever found. There are videos, easy
readers, and games that help students build reading skills.

www.bbc.co.uk/schools/wordsandpictures/index.shtml This BBC site has great phonics games
to help budding readers.
Language Arts Websites
www.storybird.com (2.0) Create online storybooks with art provided by the site. Watch
students turn basic stories into longer, more complex stories as they are inspired by the art.

www.edublogs.org (2.0) Students can create and update blogs safely using this easy site.

www.wordle.net (2.0) Make word pictures out of words of your choice, this is a great activity
for working on spelling or vocabulary.

www.spellingcity.com Choose from a great variety of spelling lists that focus on skills from
Dolch words to antonyms to analogies. Students get to play games and take tests to practice
these words. Note that there is a premium membership for a charge, however I have always
been able to do quite a bit with the free options on this site.

http://www.storyit.com/wgames/wgames.htm/ These word games help students build
confidence reading and spell bigger and harder vocabulary words.

http://teacher.scholastic.com/writewit/index.htm/ (2.0) Choose the genre you are studying
and have students walk through these Writers Workshops with tips from actual authors. In
addition, students have the opportunity to publish their work through the site.

http://www.funbrain.com/roots/index.html/ Students get to practice root words with these
games and quizzes.

Grammar Park - Hosted by Harcourt schools, these great grammar games will help your
students, no matter the adoption your school has chosen.
Science Websites
The Science 4 Kids sites are great places for finding information on many science topics.
Astronomy 4 Kids Biology 4 Kids Chemistry 4 Kids
Geology 4 Kids Physics 4 Kids
www.kidport.com/RefLib/Science/ScienceIndex.htm This is a great site with kid friendly
explanations of many different science topics.

www.eia.gov/kids/energy.cfm The science of energy, electricity, renewable resources and non-
renewable resources with great kid-friendly explanations.

www.bbc.co.uk/schools/websites/4_11/site/science.shtml These BBC science links are
wonderful. Many include demonstrations and videos that bring science to life for students.

www.smithsonianeducation.org/students/explore_by_topic/science_nature.html The
Smithsonian hosts many games and hands on activities for kids to play with science at their
website.

www.smithsonianeducation.org/scientist/index.html Inspire kids to study science with these
video interview with real life scientists.

www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/k-4/index.html This part of Nasas site is specifically for
students in grades K-4. In addition to games and stories on different topics, students can
watch Nasa TV and see actual astronauts working on the space shuttle.

www.kidport.com/RefLib/Science/HumanBody/HumanBodyIndex.htm Kid friendly explanations
and diagrams of the various human body systems.
Social Studies Websites
Teaching history through biographies give students connections to the people that were there
during the time. There are many great websites for kids with biographies of important people
throughout histories. Here are a few of my favorites:

Important Hispanic Americans

www.socialstudiesforkids.com - Great, Kid friendly explanations of many different Social
Studies topics.

www.native-languages.org/kids.htm Kid-friendly, real life explanations of Native American
tribes, their customs and their lives past and present.

www.americaslibrary.gov - Hosted by the Library of Congress, this great site gives students an
interesting look into American history and geography.

www.sheppardsoftware.com/World_Continents.htm Work on geography with these great
interactive games.

Technology Websites
There are many skills students should learn to be safe and efficient on the internet. Here are
some websites that will help students work on these technology skills.

www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing - The best way Ive ever found to teach students to type without
looking at the keys. Cute animals talk and dance and reward students for each milestone while
they work through typing exercises that are clearly explained on the screen.

http://www.typingmaster.com/games/ More fun typing activities, these are great for younger
kids who are just getting familiar with the keyboard. They burst bubbles, play pac man, and
just have fun finding the keys on the keyboard.

http://www.abcya.com/kids_technology_vocabulary.htm Practice technology vocabulary with a
search through a messy room.

http://mediasmarts.ca/digital-media-literacy/educational-games/ Great games to help
students work on internet safety and making wise decisions online. My favorite games are about
the three cyber pigs, here are their links:

www.ikeepsafe.org/youth/fauxpaw - Great simple way to teach internet safety to young
children, using Faux Paw, a friend of McGruff the crime dog.

http://pbskids.org/webonauts Surf around the web like astronauts while learning about
internet safety.

Research Websites
When doing research, student should not be doing web searches using search engines designed
for grown-ups like www.google.com or www.yahoo.com, as they are likely to find information that
is not deemed appropriate for children. Here is a list of kid-friendly search engines, which
monitor the content of their searches to keep the results appropriate for a child audience.
