1. DEFINITION
PLYCEM represents technology implemented
t o manufact ure asbest os- free fiber- cement
pr oduct s , t o be us ed i n cons t r uct i on of
buildings, houses and general type of works.
Every PLYCEM product is manufactured following
the strictest environmental regulations.
1.1 Raw Materials
T he mai n r aw mat er i al s empl oyed f or
PLYCEM products come from traditional,
commonly used materials, like cement and
nat ural f i bers, whi ch are processed and
t ransformed using an el aborat e indust rial
system.
1.2 Properties and Advantages
PLYCEM products are highly versatile; they
can be used with any conventional constructive
met hod, and wi t h t he mos t moder n of
industrialized constructive systems.
PLYCEM sheets are convenient for exterior
and i nt eri or appl i cat i on, offeri ng several
advantages:
They don't contain hazardous products.
Their process of application is not aggressive.
They can be cut, sanded, nailed, rougdressed,
drilled and screwed with adequate conventional
tools.
They accept a wide variety of finishes
They resist moisture, don't disintegrate in the
presence of water, or decompose
They provide good electrical isolation
They don't combust, generate smoke non toxic
fumes
They resist mold and mildew attack, insects
microorganisms and rodents.
PLYCEM products resist mechanical stress,
have a good resistance to shock, are durable,
and have a l ast ing endurance against t he
damaging action of rain, sun, and wind even
when left unprotected.
2. DESCRIPTION
Ou r man u f ac t u r i n g s y s t e m pr o du c e s
corrugated sheets for roofing and flat
sheets; this chapter contains information
regarding flat sheets only, which comply
with all requirements and demands expected
from ISO norm 8336 and ASTM C1186.
Flat sheets are of rectangular shape, and a
light gray color. The surface that is exposed
to the atmosphere is smooth, not calibrated,
and the opposite side is rough.
Depending on their final use, there are two
kinds of flat sheets:
a. Non Moisture-Proof Sheets
For use in interior areas, unexposed to rain (5,
6, and 8 mm. thickness).

b. Moisture-Proof Sheets
For use in exterior or humid areas (11 mm.

3.1 Fireproof
PLYCEM is not a smoke generator: it doesnt
spread fire and is fireproof.
3.2 Durability
Based on evidence and quick aging processes
applied to the material on laboratory, the
durability of the PLYCEM sheets used with the
proper coatings and maintenance, can exceed
the 20 years, when exposed to climatic effects.
3.3 Workability
PLYCEM sheets have a flat surface; theyre
un-calibrated and may be decorated.
Before appl yi ng any of t he recommended
coatings, its recommended to wipe any dust
with a moist cloth.
IIn most appl ications its very important to
balance the level of humidity absorption in
bot h si des of t he sheet i n or der t o avoi d
defacing.
PLYCEM sheets can be cut, drilled, screwed,
sanded, pared, nai l ed, gl ued, carved or
transformed with hand or mechanical tools.
In the case of repeated working, its essential
to use tools with tungsten blades only.
3.4 Maintenance
Owing to their nature, PLYCEM sheets dont
require any special maintenance, onl y the
routine treatment demanded by any building.
Should there be any fissure or fracture, they
can be easily fixed. If the sheets have any
special kind of superficial coating applied,
adequate maintenance for that specific finish
must be considered.
4. Transport and handling
PLYCEM sheets must be transported on a firm,
flat platform, protected from moisture.
Never shoul d t hey be t ransport ed wi t hout
adequate support or they may break.

To handle, take them by the longer edges and
ttransport them vertically.
5. STORAGE
PLYCEM sheets must be stored indoors, where
the floor is flat, over a plank or platform, raised
above the ground with leveled supports.

The maximum distance between them should be
0.60 meters.
Outdoors storage in not encouraged, and if so,
only temporarily; for very brief periods,
protecting them from moisture using some
plastic, canvas or rubber covering.
The storing of one platform over the other is
possible if the stability conditions of the floor
allow it and they are separated enough.

7. ADJUSTMENT TO WEATHER
CONDITIONS
Before their installation, sheets must be aired on
site, indoors, for a period of 24-48 hours.
This will allow them to balance their humidity
with ambient air. Sheets should be stored
horizontally, by placing separators between
them, that will allow both sides to remain
exposed to environmental humidity.
8. WORKING PROCEDURES
8.1 Cutting with a Handsaw
Always trace a guiding line on the sheet.
Use an ordinary handsaw, 60 cm. long, with at
least 10 teeth per inch
A gripper and triangular file will help you to
keep the handsaw sharp and in good shape.
8.2 Cutting with a Blunter
Use a metal rule as guide, carve a 3mm depth
groove.
In sheets of 14 mm of thickness or more, carve
coincident groove in the opposed sides.

Version 1, October 2002
GENERALITIES 007 CHAPTER 01
Place a guideline piece under the sheet, the
edge will be coincident with the groove, bend
the material until you can rip it off.
Using the rasp or the bench plane, even the cut
down.
8.3 Mechanical Cut
Electric Saw: use a tungsten disk, of at least
40teeths. Avoid generating dust, use machines
equipped with dust vacuuming devices, and
never use water while cutting. Work in an
openspace, wearing safety goggles, mask and
gloves.
Jaig Saw: useful for irregular cuts, generates
bigger shavings. Doesnt require water.
8.4 Drilling
Use a bit brace, hand or electric drill with
standard metal drills.
8.5 Paring
Sheets are made of cement, but can be easily
trimmed by using conventional carpentry tools
(brush, sander, rasp, router).

9. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR
INSTALLATION
Each application must be done following the
recommendations given in the corresponding
chapter. Notwithstanding the Basic Norm, the
following should be taken into account:
9.1 Structural Bearings
PLYCEM sheets require at least some
structural bearing along their sides and a
vertical support at an interval of 610 mm
maximum.
9.2 Types of Structure
Structural bearings can be made of wood,
galvanized studs, iron steel or other material;
in all cases, they should be protected against
c or r os i on and abr as i on. Des i gn and
calculations should be performed by a relevant
professional.
9.2.1 Wood
It should be dry, flat, of uniform sections,
and protected against insect attack.
9.2.2 Red Iron Steel Structures
Various dimensions and shapes may be used.
They should be protected against corrosion.
9.2.3 Galvanized Steel Structures
They are a safe and fast, adequate technical
option. They provide a quick and economic
solution for construction.

10. FIXING ELEMENTS
A successful application depends to a great
extent on the fixing of boards to the
structures.
Always use appropriate fixing systems
depending on each need. As a reference
guide, without pretending it to be a norm or
specification, the recommendation is to use
galvanized steel structures and that fixing
elements adhere to the following
recommendations:
10.1 Assembling of Galvanized
Steel Structures
#8x" or " extra flat-head, non-skidding,
galvanized steel screws, High-Low screw
thread, self-drilling kind fine tip (LH 8-050, LH
8-075).
Used to assemble galvanized steel structures of
a thickness up to 0.8 mm.
#8x" or " extra flat-head, non-skidding,
galvanized steel screws, type "S" screw thread,
self-drilling bit tip (LH 8-050, LH 8-075).
Used to assemble galvanized steel structures of
a thickness within the range of 0.8-1.4 mm.

10.2 Fixing of PLYCEM Sheets
#6x1" trumpet-head, galvanized steel screws,
self-countersinking groove, High-Low screw
thread, self-drilling fine tip (PL 6-100).
Used to fix PLYCEM sheets of a thickness up
to 8 mm., to a wood or galvanized structure of
a lesser thickness.

# 10x1" and #10x1" trumpet-head,
galvanized steel screws, self-countersinking groove,
type S12 screw thread, with self-drilling bit tip, and
flaps for expanded perforations (PH 10-150)
Used for fixing 20, 22 and 30 mm PLYCEM sheets
to galvanized steel structures of a thickness within
the range of 0.8 and 2 mm.
10.3 Assembling of Structural
Elements
#10x",#12x" and #12x1", hexagonal
head, galvanized steel screws, type S4 screw
thread, self-drilling bit tip (MM10-050, MM10-
075, MM12-150).
Used for assembl ing gal vanized st eel
structural elements like beams, arches up to
2 mm thick.
11. JOINTS BEWEEN SHEETS
The area of contact between two sheets must
have a bearing, wide enough to have both
sheets safely installed, with fixing screws
properly placed.By no means shall the sheets
touch each other; there must be an opening
between them.
This should be executed according to the type
of joint chosen: Decorative Joint, Control Joint
or Invisible Joint
11.1 Width of Supporting
Elements at Joints
For interior walls, the minimum width for a
bearing where two sheets join should be 50
mm.
For exterior walls, where PLYCEM sheets
are used as the only protective covering on
the walls, this width should be 100 mm.
If there exists a waterproof covering,
whi ch compl et el y i nsul at es PLYCEM
sheets, EIFS or DAFS type, it should suffice
with 50 mm.
11.2 Types of Joints
11.2.1 Decorative Joint
By means of a f orced separat i on, a j oi nt
c an be u s e d as a de c or at i v e e l e me nt ;
depending if it s t o be used for ext erior or
i nt eri or wal l s, some addi t i onal measures
hav e t o be t aken t o guar ant ee i t s t ot al
water-tightness. Width should ot be below
the recommended 4 mm.

Version 1, October 2002
GENERALITIES 012 CHAPTER 01
11.2.2 Control Joint
Open joint created to absorb expansions and
contractions characteristic of sheets;it prevents
fissures (in other places of application.
Movements originated by contraction and
expansion of components, vibrations and
structural adjustments will traduce themselves in
fissures on joints between sheets. ts highly
recommended to incorporate control joints at a
distance of every 6 meters maximum: different
functional or decorative treatments may be
applied to this joint.
If an elastic filler is chosen, the size of the joint
has to be designed considering a proportion of
1:1 to 2:1 (width/depth), the minimum width
must be 6 mm.; constructive joints have to be
executed following the manufacturers
recommendations.
Its not recommended to apply any coating or
paint over control joints
1.2.3 Constructive Joint
Putting together materials of different natures
requires designing a joint that will allow their
free movement.
By its nature, it should be visible and executed
according to constructive techniques related to
that field; its minimum width should be 10 mm.
11.2.4 Invisible Rigid Joint
As implied in its name, it will not be visible to the
eye. This is achieved by applying epoxic paste
like PLYCEM-Gel or Pega-Cem. Its minimum
width should be 4 mm.
Recommended only for interior use: it should
never be applied on exterior walls.
