Course Description:
Science Olympiad is an elective that includes many club activities. The one component of this elective is
preparing for the Science Olympiad State Competition in spring. We will also be competing in You be the
Chemist, e-cybermission, and MATE. Students will work together as a team to support each other and
learn fun new things like robot building, bridge structure, robot building, chemistry, and experimental
design.
Required Texts:
None
Supplies:
3-ring Binder, pen, $30 Class Fee for High School Students, $30 Class Fee for Middle School Students
*Science Olympiad Shirt (This will be ordered after the school year starts if needed, the cost of
the shirt is included in the fee.)
Objectives:
Students taking this class will get a deeper understand of different science concepts. Students will learn
hands on skills like using power tools, and how to study for exams as they prepare for their events.
Students will also learn that science is fun and has many applications besides just the textbook learning
that they are used too. Students will also be a part of a team and learn to work as a team together. For
more information on how Science Olympiad works go to soinc.org.
Class Expectations:
Students will come with open hearts and be prepared to be flexible.
Students are required to be at the Practice Competition in February and the State Competition
in April
Assignments will be turned in on time and complete.
Asking for help when needed.
Academic Dishonesty: Knowing involvement in cheating will result in receiving no credit for the
assignment in question and being reported to the principal.
Respectful behavior on field trips and for speakers, recognizing that this is an opportunity for us
to display the excellent characteristics of Life Christian School.
Grading:
Participation:
Since this is a team, students will be given a weekly score on participation. This score will reflect how
they used their time and how well they worked and supported others. Students will also have a portion
of their grade reflected for their attendance at competitions. Since this is a team sport, its expected that
everyone participates and everyone competes.
Projects:
Students will be assigned several projects in each quarter. These projects will support their study of their
Science Olympiad events. The project should be completed during class time.
Worksheets/Homework:
Worksheets and homework will be assigned throughout the term.
Fundraising:
Students are expected to help with fundraising done by the team. This will mostly just include having a
good attitude and a helpful spirit during root beer float sales.

Grades will be assigned as follows:

Absences:
If you are absent YOU are responsible for the material covered in class that day.
Pre-Arranged Absences: If the absence is pre-arranged, assignments and tests must be taken before-
hand. If an assignment is due on a day that you are absent AND the absence is excused, the assignment
may be turned in for full credit on the day that you return from being absent.
Excused Absences: You will receive an extension of one day for every excused day of absence. For
example, if you miss one day of class, you have one day to make up the work. You must turn in
assignments that were due on your first day of absence.
Late Work:
Assignments are due by the beginning of class. Assignments will lose 10% for being one day late.
Assignments will lose 20% for being two days late. Assignments will not receive any credit if they are
more than two days late.
Plagiarism:
Assignments will receive a zero if there is any evidence of plagiarism. Students will then be referred to
the principal and other consequences may follow. Plagiarism includes using others work without citing it
and copying others work. A general rule of thumb for avoiding plagiarism is, if in doubt, cite it!

Syllabus Sign off

I have read the course syllabus and understand all classroom policies and procedures. I understand that
this is a team, and that it will require some time afterschool prior to the completion. I also understand
that there is a $30 fee in middle school to cover the cost of initial registration and some supplies. I am
also giving permission for my student to be photographed and that these pictures may end up on the
Science Olympiad webpage or school web page. If I do not want my child to be photographed I will let
Mrs. Neill know. The best way to contact Mrs. Neill is holly.neill@lcslions.org.
