Tri-County Exchange Student
Opportunities
CASE Exchange Student Programs is
offering American teens the opportu-
nity to study in France for a summer,
and is also looking for host homes in
the Tri-County area for foreign teens
due to arrive in January for the 2nd se-
mester of this high school year.
According to the CASE Field Director,
Sandra Storer, applications are now be-
ing accepted for American teens 15-18
to travel for one or two weeks to France
in a homestay program. The students
will be provided room, board and
guidance during their stay in France,
and a program representative will be
available 24/7 to oversee the exchange
stay.
The program is also looking for host
homes for incoming 2nd semester stu-
dents due to arrive in January. The
students are 15 to 18, have full medical
insurance, pocket money and have ex-
pressed a true desire to be an exchange
student for 5 months. Families with
or without children are eligible to of-
fer their hospitality. The student can
share a room, but not a bed.
In particular, the program is looking
for a host family for a 16 year old girl
from Belgium who is a straight A stu-
dent, enjoys playing the Saxophone
and loves sports; and a 17 year old boy
from Brazil who says he enjoys playing
soccer, riding horses, computers and
has a good sense of humor.

Learn How to Set a Goal

Twain, “Giving up smoking is the easi-
est thing in the world. I know because
I’ve done it thousands of times.” Set-
ting a goal, whether it be to lose weight,
earn a promotion or spend more time

more things, fall down, pick themselves

to quit giving up on your goals? SUC-

tips for more successful goal-setting:
- Write down a list of goals. Cynthia
Kersey, author of “Unstoppable: 45
Powerful Stories of Perseverance and
Triumph from People Just Like You,”
suggests focusing on how you want to
be remembered. “List the qualities,
deeds and characteristics for which you
would like to be remembered by your
friends, spouse, children, co-workers,
the community and even the world.”
- Set out a plan to accomplish your
goals. Tracy suggests listing what little
steps will take you to your goal, then
organizing them by priority and se-
quence. Figure out how much time and
money you will need to accomplish
your goals, and revisit and revise your
plan accordingly.
- Manage your mindset. Keep your fo-
cus by surrounding yourself with peo-
ple who will help you accomplish your
goals. Arrange your workspace and
home so you’ll be reminded of your
commitments. “When you form the
habit of starting your productivity ear-
lier in the day, associating with more
positive people, managing the news
and information you feed your mind,
controlling the language you use -- es-
pecially the ways in which you describe
yourself -- you will find it easier to suc-
ceed,” says Jim Cathcart, professional
speaker and founder of the Cathcart
Institute Inc. “Become the person who
would achieve your goals and who
would deserve them.”

Are You Stressing Yourself Out?
(NewsUSA) - It’s true that some stress
is unavoidable -- you will feel pres-
sured at work, wake up late, have bills
to pay and deal with professional and
personal obligations. But are the de-
mands on your time really that unfor-
giving, or are you needlessly elevating
your stress levels?

created,” says Susan Fletcher, a prac-
ticing psychologist, consultant and the
author of “Working in the Smart Zone”
and “Parenting in the Smart Zone,”

Magazine. “But every single person can
make things harder than they need to
be.”
Some people add stress into their
lives by reading too much into things.
Sometime a look is just a look. And a
dirty mug left in the sink may just be
a dirty mug, not a passive-aggressive
statement in a domestic cold war.
Others may take on projects too large
for one person to handle, yet insist on
doing everything themselves, because
they believe they are the only person
suited to the task. “Another way people
create stress is when they believe they
are the only person who can do some-
thing, and they don’t involve or collab-
orate with other people,” says Fletcher.
“Women do it at home a lot, and I be-
lieve both genders do it a lot at work.”
So how can self-stressors learn to stop
creating their own anxiety? Fletcher
offers the following tips:
• Learn to trust. You have to give the
people around you a little rope. If you
always do every project yourself, the
people you work with will never learn
to pull their own weight. You have to
trust them with pieces of the project.
Failure is only another learning oppor-
tunity.
• Set clear goals. You should know what
you want. You should also know what
you need to do to get what you want. If
you lose focus, you may find yourself
overwhelmed by the sheer number of
things that need to be accomplished.
• Choose an accountability partner.
Find a friend or family member (albeit
one who does not live with you) who
will both listen to you and hold you ac-
countable.

Green Living: A Plus For Our
Planet
(NewsUSA) - How green is your world?
For some of us, the inconvenient truth
is this: When it comes to “greening”
our home, our lifestyle, our family and
our pets, we are not always sure where
to begin.
Here are some easy-to-embrace, eco-
friendly tips. Try some. Try them all.
We and the planet may be better for
them.
• One coffee cup? Two cereal bowls?
Don’t put the dishwasher to work.
Rinse and air dry. Run the energy-sap-
ping dishwasher only when it’s full and
on its energy-saver mode.
• Take shorter showers and consider
baths a special treat. Hot water heaters
are a major energy drain. Insulate your
water heater. Install low-flow shower
heads -; you’ll cut your water usage
and water-heating costs.
• Use more energy-efficient lighting
throughout your home. Light-emitting
diodes (LEDs) have come a long way
and are often 10 times more efficient
than compact fluorescents.
• Choose pet products and pet health
care providers who share your concern
for the natural world. For example,

• One day each week, leave the car in
the garage all day.
• Our parents were on to something
-; when leaving a room, turn off the
lights.
• Drip. Drip. Drip. A leaky faucet can
waste up to 20 gallons of water a day.
A leaky toilet can flush an extra 200
gallons every day. Put six drops of food
coloring in the tank. Wait ten minutes.
If you find color in the bowl, you have
a leaker.
• Planning to build a new home or add
on to your existing residence? Locate
contractors who participate in green
building programs.
• Take a cue from our grandparents.
Use natural resources to clean. Lemon
juice and vinegar were powerful tools
in the past.
• Get out the caulking gun, and weather
strip your home.
• Walk, bike or car pool whenever pos-
sible. You’ll save energy and burn a few
extra calories.

When Lacking Zzzs Packs on
Pounds

many times during the night, and every
time they stop breathing, their brains
pull them out of deep sleep.
Researchers have always seen a clear
association between obstructive sleep
apnea and obesity. People suffering
from obesity are more likely to develop
sleep apnea, and people with sleep
apnea are more likely to be obese.
But some studies show a clear link
between decreased REM sleep, or
deep sleep, and weight gain. A study
presented at an Annual Meeting of the
Associated Professional Sleep Societies,
which used 163 obstructive sleep apnea
patients, found that patients with the
smallest amount of REM sleep were
almost 20 pounds heavier than other
patients. Following treatment, patients
who experienced the biggest increase in
REM sleep also showed the most weight
loss.
The relationship between REM sleep
and body weight may not be restricted
simply to sleep apnea patients -- after
all, lifestyles and work hours often
shorten the number of hours that
Americans sleep.
Too little sleep can cause any number of
health problems, including headaches,
difficulty concentrating, excessive
daytime sleepiness and increased risk of
heart disease and diabetes. If you’re not
sure whether you exhibit signs of sleep
deprivation, go to the American Sleep

Setting aside enough hours for sufficient
sleep -- or, if needed, getting treatment
for a sleep disorder -- will improve your
energy levels and quality of life. Fitting

It’s Flu Season, But Don’t Forget
About Colds

known as swine flu, many Americans
might forget about another threat -- the
