1.0 INTRODUCTION

Solid waste is waste material such as waste from household garbage, waste debris or
construction waste. Solid waste is also made of a material that can be recycled. Examples of
solid waste materials such as metal, plastic, hazardous waste, food waste, and so on.Waste
management is the collection , transport , processing and disposal of waste. Solid waste
management also managing and monitoring the waste.Wastes are managed in order to reduce
environmental pollution problems that will cause health problems in the community. Solid
waste management includes all waste whether solid, liquid, gaseous or radioactive sources.
One of the most obvious effects of rapidly increasing urbanization and economic
development . Based on the estimation, the amount of garbage in Asia has reached 1 million
tons per day. A World Bank study shows that urban areas in Asia to spend $ 25 million a year
to solid waste management, and this figure will increase to USD47 million per year, (Shigeo
Takenaka,2007). Solid waste management has become an important issue in the Asia -
Pacific region, and it should be resolved through an integrated society , the private sector, and
policy-based approach. Variousresearch has been done on solid waste management in 11
countries, including waste generation profile, regulatory frameworks, governance solid-waste
management, waste collection and disposal mechanism, Green Productivity activities and so
on.
This task is made to find out more about management and gain more insight on solid
waste management. We can also determine the level of hygiene practiced by the company in
term of environmental pollution. For this task, we choose to conduct the task at industrial
area to investigate deeply about management of solid waste at a different company. So that,
we can differentiate the type of management from our finding.

3.0 METHOD OF COLLECTION

The data collection method use in this study was aimed on solid waste management.
We used survey questionnaire as our primary source of data. A set of questionnaire were
created to get the answers from the respondents. In addition, the questions chosen for the
questionnaire include open-ended and also closed-ended questions.
We employed questionnaire as the main instruments in this study with the target of 15
industrial places at Gebeng industrial area. This survey was distributed and conducted to the
workers of commercial and industrial areas as the respondents for our investigation. This
survey was randomly picked between 15 industrial area at Gebeng.
The questionnaires were intended to investigate the type of waste generated and
identify the waste storage system and observe the solid waste management practice on their
industrial. It will also help us to get feedback from the respondents if they have suggestion
about how to improve the solid waste management system. Finally, the findings were
discussed according to the research questions. All the data obtained from the survey
questionnaire were analyzed using specific data analysis procedures.

4.0 WASTAGE PRODUCTION
According to our site visit to the 15 industrial area at Gebeng, Kuantan, we had interview
all the 15 companies about the solid waste management at their companies which is
PETIKEMAS, PHEONIX INTERNATIONAL, VIBRANT WAVES SDN BHD, PADI
BERAS NASIONAL BHD, MIECO CHIPBOARD BHD, JAWA MALAYSIA SDN BHD,
KINSTEEL BHD, URBAN ENVIRONMENT INDUSTRIES SDN BHD, POLYPLASTICS,
ASTURI METAL BUILDER (M) SDN BHD, BOCCARD (M) SDN BHD, DIALOG
FABRICATOR SDN BHD, SOUTHERN STEEL MESH, BUJ TECHNOLOGY
ENTERPRISE SDN BHD, and EC EXCEL WIRE SDN BHD.

We analyzed that, every company produced different solid waste and different ways to
manage it. The wastage are divided into two parts which is organics waste (food, paper,
cardboard, textiles, wood, yard waste, and other) and inorganics waste (glass, tins,
aluminium, other metal, dirt/ash, demolition and construction, and other). Besides, the
production of waste at each company produced hazardous and non-hazardous waste
materials. The Table 4.1 shows the percentage of organics waste, Table 4.2 shows the
percentage of inorganics waste and Table 4.3 shows the production of hazardous waste.

5.0 RESULT AND BRIEFING OF GRAPH

After doing some observation, collecting the data and interview a few people in an
industrial company, we produce 8 graphs including pie charts, diagram and others. Firstly,
from the graph of types of waste used in the industry, it outlines the x axis of this diagram
shows types of waste in industrial world such as plastic (9.50%), paper (42.90%), tin (19%)
and others by 28.60%.
Besides, we also exposed that the segregation of recyclable of waste product is about
66.70% handle by workplace worker and only 13.30% corporate with the specific
management worker. From the pie chart of selling type of this recyclable material, the highest
percent (46.70%) has sent the recyclable material to recycle point buyer. This pie chart also
represent 40.00% recycled outside the building while 13.30% by others.
There are only two types location of waste container for each company. Most of them
(73.30%) locate their waste container outside which is open air/alleys. 26.70% from the graph
locate their waste container indoor or inside their company. From the diagram of time
collection, it represents 4 times to collect all the waste product which is early morning,
afternoon, evening and night. The highest percent to collect the waste product is early in the
morning. (47.00%). The second highest is in the afternoon (29.40%), 23.60% is in the
evening and there is no collection of waste product on the night.
Last but not least, after collecting the data from an industrial company, we can
analyze that the most collection frequency of waste product is 53.30% which is 1-3 times per
week and the time spend for collect those product just take only 10-15 minutes. The least
collection frequency of waste product is about 7 and above times per week.

7.0 DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
From the data and result obtain, mostly waste recycle produce by the industry is paper.
And the least product produce by industry is plastic. This waste product mostly is sent to
recycle point/buyer and mostly is put in open air or alleys. The time collection for this waste
product is usually in early morning and collected 1-3 times/week by mechanically process
that is by using bin lift as well as waste truck. Mostly the container use to keep the waste
product produce by the industry is metal container that was provided by the owner of the
factory.
In the first place, industrial waste causes air pollution. Solid and gaseous waste can
pollute the air. Using fossil fuels such as gas, coal and oil to create electricity for power
industries and manufacturing operations can produce toxic chemicals that are generated to the
air through chimneys and exhaust pipes. Most of air pollutants include CO, SO
2
, and others.
More than that, steam containing high amounts of SO
2
, NO
2
from contaminated lakes and
rivers will come into acid rain that can cause forest fires and many diseases for people and
animals. Last but not least, industrial waste can result in soil pollution. Soil pollution is
defined as soil contaminated with liquid and solid toxic waste. Waste products from
manufacturing, oil from storage tanks, lead from paints and fuel spills are the main reason
causing soil pollution. Pollutants in soil lessen the quality of soil, make them unsalable.
Besides, soil pollution may be hazardous to childrens brain, make people headaches and eye
irritation.
Toxic air pollutants, or air toxics, are known to cause or are suspected of causing cancer,
birth defects, reproduction problems, and other serious illnesses. Exposure to certain levels of
some toxic air pollutants can cause difficulty in breathing, nausea or other illnesses. Exposure
to certain toxic pollutants can even cause death.
There are many things you can do to reduce your impact on the environment. If we all use
energy, transport and other goods and services more carefully, we can reduce harmful
emissions to our air, land and water. Everyday choices have the power to make a difference,
and help protect our environment for a clean and sustainable future.

24

To overcome pollution that comes from waste product in industry, several methods can be
made. Industry can use NPI data to improve manufacturing processes, and can benchmark
their emissions against similar facilities. Annual reporting also assists industry in
documenting progress in reducing emissions and provides a measure of current
environmental performance. One of the main goals of the NPI is to encourage facilities to use
cleaner production techniques to reduce substance emissions and decrease waste. Reporting
facilities have the option of reporting on cleaner production activities and pollution control
developments that they have undertaken during the reporting year.
