Educational Requirements
Some film and movie directors never spent a day in a university or film school. While film directors do
not have set requirements for employment, educational programs have much to offer to aspiring
directors. An education in film studies and technique may provide valuable training to a budding film
and movie director.
Enrolling in a film study program at a university, college, technical or vocational school can teach film
directors much about filmmaking and the industry. Whether learning about the technical aspects of
filmmaking, the trends in the movie industry or making contacts to assist in career development, film
directors can gain skills and preparation for a film career.

Typical Salary of a Film Director

Film directors are responsible for directing plays written for
television and motion pictures. The March 2011 issue of
Vanity Fair Magazine reported that the highest paid film
directors in Hollywood earn between $13 million and $257
million per year. These directors include the likes of James
Cameron, Steven Spielberg and Tyler Perry. Salaries in
the million dollar or higher range are not the norm for the
average film director.
Mean Salary
In May 2011, the United States Bureau of
Labor Statistics reported the average film
director earns an average of $92,220 per year,
$44.34 per hour. The bottom 10 percent earned
an average of $32,010 annually. The top 10
percent earned in excess of $187,199 per year.
The highest paid directors are the ones who
have a high public demand. When there is a

The entertainment business is a highly competitive profession, and competition for
jobs is fierce. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2008,
there were roughly 98,600 producers and directors working around the country
(www.bls.gov). The BLS expects an increase of ten percent in job opportunities
between 2008 and 2018.
The majority of films are produced in New York City and Los Angeles, although
there are production companies across the country. The BLS reports that the
annual average salary in May 2010 for directors and producers was $88,610. This
figure can be misleading; however, since it includes the salaries of high-profile,
multimillion-dollar Hollywood directors. Because of these multi-million dollar
productions, directors and producers were paid the most in California and New
York.
