After Guido Reni (Italian, 1575-1642)
Angel Appearing to St. Jerome
Inscribed indistinctly Guido Ren.../... l.l.
Oil on canvas, 81 x 59 1/4 in. (206.0 x 150.5
cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, restored tears,
craquelure, skinning, surface grime.
Provenance: Ex collection Birmingham
Museum of Art, Birmingham, Alabama, gift
of Andrew L. Lynn in 1971; purchased by
the current owner from C.G. Sloan & Co.,
February 6, 1987, Lot 1851.
N.B. The painting at hand is a copy after an
original by Guido Reni now in the collection of
the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan.
The authorship of the copy is not known. Dr.
Arnauld Brejon of the Louvre viewed this copy
in the collection of the Birmingham Museum
in 1977 and remarked that the inscription
probably once read Guido Reni fec [name
illegible] Inv. This inscription would likely
have listed the copyists name. It has been
suggested that the copyist was Italian, from
the second half of the 17th century.

Daniel Chester French (American, 1850-
1931)
Plaster Bas Relief of Muses, c. 1910
Inscribed To/Mrs. Henry Warwick/
Compliments of/Daniel C. French/Jan.
22./1910. in ink l.r.
Plaster bas-relief, maximum dimensions 12
1/4 x 15 1/4 x 3/4 in. (31.0 x 38.5 x 2.0 cm),
with a wire for hanging embedded in the
reverse.
Condition: Chip/notch at top center edge,
surface grime and accretions.
N.B. This plaster of two classical female
fgures with stringed instruments led by a
cherub conductor came from the collection
of art and furnishings of Arden Cottage, a
summer home built in the late 19th century
in Fortune, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Known colloquially as The Three Graces,
the relief was dedicated as a gift from the
artist to Elsa Warwick, said to have been the
model for this piece and several of Frenchs
other sculptures, as well as for the illustrator
Charles Dana Gibson. The inscription on the
plaster appears to be in Frenchs own hand.
New Yorkers, Elsa and her husband, the actor
Harry Warwick, were residents of the artists
colony established in Fortune at the turn of
the century. Arden Cottage and its contents,
including memorabilia from the original
owners (Charles Kent and Betty Barry), were
purchased in 1971 from Margaret MacMillan
Pratt by the current owners. A letter and a
photocopy of a brief printed reminiscence
about Arden Cottage accompany the lot.
There is a plaster relief of the same image and
of similar dimensions in the casting room at
Chesterwood, the home of Daniel Chester
French in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
We would like to thank the staff at
Chesterwood for their kind assistance
cataloging this lot.

Oil on canvas, 22 x 18 in. (56.0 x 46.0 cm),

Provenance: Through the collection of William
Knickerbocker Wallbridge (1882-1979) of

N.B. Born in Kentucky, Charles Courtney
Curran received art training in New York City
at the National Academy of Design and the Art
Students League, where he was active in the
1880s. He then journeyed to Paris to study
at the Acadmie Julian from 1889 to 1891. In
1903, at the invitation of fellow artist Frederick
Dellenbaugh, Curran visited the hamlet of
Cragsmoor, an art colony along the Hudson
River north of Poughkeepsie that had been
founded in the early 1870s and was home to
E. L. Henry, J.G. Brown, and other notable
painters and illustrators. Curran acquired
a studio there in 1910 and divided his time
between Cragsmoor and New York City for
the rest of his career. It was in Cragsmoor that
he developed his hallmark style of fgures of
young women set in light-flled garden views
or against sweeping hilltop vistas. The painting
at hand, Apple Perfume, is dated 1911, after
his move to Cragsmoor, and captures the
delight and simple beauty of a child savoring
the scent of a newly picked apple.

Charles Courtney Curran (American, 1861-
1942)
The Water Gate, Worlds Columbian
Exposition, Chicago, 1893
Signed and dated CHAS C CURRAN 93
l.r., inscribed No. XV in two places on the
stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 17 1/2 x 12 in. (44.3 x 30.5
cm), framed.
Condition: Small puncture to l.l. quadrant,
scattered small paint losses, craquelure,
stretcher bar marks, surface grime.
Provenance: Through the collection of
William Knickerbocker Wallbridge (1882-1979)
of Connecticut, to the current owner by family
descent.
N.B. The painting at hand shows elegant
strollers at the Worlds Fair held in Chicago
in 1893. Known to many as the Worlds
Columbian Exposition, the fair, which
celebrated the 400th anniversary of
Christopher Columbuss arrival in the New
World, showcased achievements in science,
art, and industry from 46 countries around
the world. Its location in Chicago was
very signifcant. The city, which had been
devastated by the Great Fire of 1871, had
to compete with urban rivals such as New
York, Washington, and St. Louis for the
honor of hosting the fair. The magnifcent and
successful presentation was visited by over
20 million people and proved to be of lasting
social and cultural impact, a defning moment
for the host city and for Americas optimistic
self-image.
The overall design of the Chicago Columbian
Exposition was championed by Daniel
Burnham, as Director of Works, and Frederick
Law Olmsted, who laid out the grounds. The
fair was intended as a prototype of what a
modern city should be, helping to inspire the
City Beautiful movement. The Beaux Arts
style buildings were splendid and impressive.
The Court of Honor structures, most of which
were designed to be temporary, were clad in
white stucco, and these luminous facades,
along with the glow provided by the new and
extensive use of street lights, earned the fair
the sobriquet The White City. The design
also included a large water pool, symbolizing
the long voyage Columbus took to the New
World.
For Burnham, architecture and sculpture
were paramount, and the arts were amply
represented throughout the fair. Paintings
were housed in the Art Palace. Among the
hundreds of works exhibited by artists from
American and abroad, Charles Courtney
Curran was represented with eleven oils and
one pastel drawing, and he was awarded a
prize.
This composition, which presents the Grand
Arch of the Peristyle and Watergate, was
made into a chromolithograph, copyright
1894, by The Columbian Memorial Publication
Society, published by The Winters Art Litho
Co. in the Supplement to the Columbian
Series, Vol. 1, No. 2, April 21, 1894.

Condition: Abrasions to center, tack holes

N.B. John Wesleys Pop artistry illustrates the
American psyche through comic-book style
imagery that often depicts intimate moments.
Wesleys unique approach to creation
was shaped by his early draftsman work
interpreting blueprints for the Northrop aircraft
company. Filled with whimsy, Wesleys works
combine existing imagery from magazines and
books that he traces and transforms into fat
representations of a reality imparted with his
fantastical vision.
Contemporaries Donald Judd and Dan Flavin
were close friends of Wesleys and proponents
of his work. Judd played an integral role in
creating the John Wesley Gallery housed in
a former horse stable near the last of the six
Dan Flavin buildings at the Chinati Foundation
in Marfa, Texas.

No visible signature.
Welded nail sphere, diameter approximately 6
in. (15.2 cm).

Provenance: Gift of the artist, sold to beneft
Prize4Life, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
N.B. On May 13, 2008, NPR broadcast a
segment about Brisbees work saying, It all
started when Bisbee was a student in college.
He was raiding abandoned houses for found
objects to use in his art when he came upon
an old bucket of nails. I kicked the bucket
and it fipped over, Bisbee recalls, and the
nails had cohered, oxidizedtheyd rusted
into the bucket shape. And it was just such
an obvious thing of beautyit was so clearly
above anything I had ever envisioned making
myself. And I sat down on the bed, and I knew
that I needed to get some nails. Bisbee went
to the hardware store and bought $30 worth
of brads. He would later move to 1-inch nails,
then 2-inch nails, ten-penny nails and 5-inch
nails. Over the years, Bisbee has created a
surprisingly diverse array of sculptures with
the nailseverything from tightly wadded balls
of welded brads, to undulating waves of bent
nails, to towering brambles of 12-inch spikes.

Conditions of Sale
1. Some of the lots in this sale are offered subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the consignor and Skinner, Inc. below
which the lot will not be sold. In most cases, the reserve will be set below the estimated range, but in no case will it exceed the estimates listed. A representative of
Skinner, Inc. will execute such reserves by bidding for the consignor. In any event and whether or not a lot is subject to a reserve, the auctioneer may reject any bid or
raise not commensurate with the value of such lot.
2. All property is sold as is, and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with respect to the property,
and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of description, genuineness, authorship,
attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall
be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability.
3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed bid, the auctioneer
shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot for sale. The auctioneer shall have
sole discretion to refuse any bid, or refuse to acknowledge any bidder. Any bidder that plans on spending in excess of $100,000 should make arrangements with the
accounting department at least five (5) days in advance of the sale, as a deposit may be required to participate.
4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a
monthly interest charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item lot not paid for within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale.
Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises for more than three (3) days from the date of sale. If any property has not been
removed within three (3) days from the date of sale, at the option of Skinner, Inc. (a) Skinner Inc., may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage
charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed within the three days, and/or (b) Skinner Inc. may place the merchandise in a subsequent
auction, without Reserve, to be sold to the highest bidder, and after deducting the standard commission and any additional charges that may apply, remit the proceeds
to the purchaser.
5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank authorization has
been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check until the check has cleared the bank.
The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment
methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases.
6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all items for which it was
the highest successful bidder, Skinner Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without limitation, (a) canceling the sale and applying any
payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchasers breach, and/or (b) offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the
purchaser has breached any of its obligations, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price, holding the purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of
sale.
7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such purchaser for such item.
8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the United States and
overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that include material from some endangered
species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities
is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots.
9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number. Exemption numbers
from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other qualifying parties can apply for a
Massachusetts exemption number prior to the auction by contacting the Massachusetts Department of Corporations and Taxation at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston.
10. A premium equal to 23% of the final bid price up to and including $100,000, plus 20% of the final bid price from $100,001 up to and including $1,000,000, plus
12% of the final bid price from $1,000,001 and over will be applied to each lot sold, to be paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms printed within, posted, and announced at the time of sale whether bidding in
person, through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.
12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any
lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalog. The copyright in all images, illustrations and written material
produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this catalog, is, and shall remain at all times, the property of Skinner, Inc. and shall not be
used by the purchaser, nor by anyone else, without our prior written consent.
13. These conditions of sale shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (excluding the laws applicable to conflicts or choice of law).
The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in connection with the transactions
contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any federal court sitting therein. The bidder/buyer consents
to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts and waives objections that it may now or hereafter have to the venue of any such suit.
