Role Of Men
Introduction
Depending upon your moral standards, whether religious or secular, the answer to the
question of What is the role of man can vary. For example, according to the King James Bible,
the role of a man is to dwell with [them] according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife,
as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be
not hindered (1 Peter 3:7). Depending upon the person you would ask who is not of a religious
background, their answer could differ. Dr. Phil stated that if men have the desire to be
prosperous in their marriage and family life, they must be a provider, a protector, a leader, and a
teacher. Others have said that the role of man does not seclude women but includes them as
well; that neither really have their own individual role based upon sex, but we as mankind work
together as one.
The Village Blacksmith by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
This poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow describes the life of a blacksmith.
Longfellow created his character to be a mans man: he had crisp, long, black hair, his face
was tan, his brows wet with honest sweat, and looks the whole world in the face,/ For he
owes not any man. The man being described has a family who he works hard for, instills moral
standards in his children by bringing them to Sunday church, and misses his deceased wife

dearly. Though he has gone through many a hardship, the man still chooses to not give up and to
provide for his family without hesitation.
"The Hunger Games", Catching Fire, and Mockingjay
(Trilogy) by Suzanne Collins
The Hunger games is a dystopian novel written by Suzanne Collins about Katniss
Everdeen. Katniss, the protagonist, is a participant and the winner of the Hunger Games, a yearly
even that takes a boy and a girl from each of the twelve districts that made up Panem, the
futuristic North America.
Katniss, the oldest sibling, took care of her mother and little sister; she was the head of
the home. Her father had passed away in a mining accident, and she was now the leader,
provider, and protector of her family. Her mother did not really work and her younger sister was
not able to help in many ways, so Katniss was left in charge. She, along with her best friend,
would go against Panems rules and hunt outside of her district to get meat to feed her family.
She would make sure that her sister was taken care of to the best of her ability.
After being chosen and winning the Hunger Games, Katniss was basically the
spokesperson for the underdogs. She was the very definition of what the lower class citizens
wanted to define themselves as: rebellious and strong. During her time in the Hunger Games,
Katniss constantly outsmarted the Capitol (the protagonist). She was definitely played her role
for mankind.
Unknown Title (Sculpture) by Choi Xoo Ang
Choi Xoo Ang is a controversial artist who is based out of Seoul, South Korea. His
sculptures depict the suffering and abuse that occurs to his people. Some say it is beautiful, but
regardless of what one thinks, it has meaning.

This particular piece has no name listed; though, it definitely does not need one to know
its message. The body is in a kneeling position and the hands are out, palms up. Everything is
painted white, except for the hands; they are colored and not to ratio like the rest of the body.
There is no sign of gender nor is there a head to indicate if there is a sex to this person.
The sculpture seems to show the distress of man. The body begs; its hands ask for help.
This person speaks to you, crying out in despair. Regardless of whether one is a man or woman,
family or single, the role of everyone and anyone is to provide for himself or herself.
Conclusion
Each composer has a different view on the role of man. To single out an individuals
purpose based solely upon their gender is completely unfair. Despite if one is a male or female,
their role is dependent upon circumstance, not by things that are completely out of their control.
