Mathemacs in the Elementary School
LastThursdayaspartofourfacultyprofessionallearning
day,wespentaperiodofmelookingatourmathemacs
curriculumandinparcularhowwedesignrich
mathemacaltasksalignedwithourstandardsand
indicators.Thishasfollowedonfromaperiodofwork
overtwoyearswherewehavereviewedourmathemacal
standardsandindicatorsandalignedwhatweusewith
internaonalbenchmarks.Thesebenchmarks,describing
thelearningoutcomesforeachgradelevel,support
teachersinmaintainingtherigorwithinourmathprogram,
whilstsllhonoringourpedagogyofinquirybased
learning.
Wedonothavegradelevelmathtextbooks,asthiswould
necessarilyimplythateverystudentisatthesamelevelat
thesameme.Insteadwehaveunitsofwork,linkedto
gradelevelindicatorsframedaroundbigmathemacal
ideasorconcepts.Theseunitsthenulizeavarietyof
resourcesinordertotargettheidenedMath
concepts.Studentsworkatalevelappropriatetowhere
theircurrentlevelofunderstandingis.Somestudentswill,
atmes,godeeperintoaconcept,justassomestudents
mayexploredeepernuancesofwring,orreading
dependingupontheirlevelofreadiness.
Runningparalleltoouridenedmathconceptsand
content,areasetofmathemacalpracceswhichwe
wantallourstudentstodevelop.TheseprovidethehowI
learnMath,alongsidethewhatamIlearningin
Math.Thesepraccesare:
1.Makesenseofproblemsandpersevereinsolvingthem.
2.Reasonabstractlyandquantavely.
3.Constructviableargumentsandcriquethereasoningof
others.
4.Modelwithmathemacs.
5.Useappropriatetoolsstrategically.
6.Aendtoprecision.
7.Lookforandmakeuseofstructure.
8.Lookforandexpressregularityinrepeatedreasoning.

OnceagainwearefortunatetobeingworkingwithaninternaonalmathemacsconsultantinJanuary2015,whowill
connuetoworkwithourteachersondevelopingmathemacallyrichtasks.Richmathemacaltasksinvolvethose
whichcanaesttothefollowingthreecriteria:
1.Themathemacsprovidesthechallenge,notthelanguage
2.Thetaskmustbeaccessibletothelearner,baseduponwhattheircurrentlevelofunderstandingis.Thisincludes
givingthetaskanauthenccontextwhichstudentscannaturallyconnectto.
3.Thetaskmustrequirejuscaonandexplanaonoftheanswerandthereasoningbehindit.
Bynowyouwillhavereceived(KindergartentoGrade4)aspecicleerfromyourclassteacher,detailinganoverview
ofyourchildsrstmathemacsunit.Hopefullythiswillgiveyousomefurthercontext.Welookforwardtoconnuing
thisconversaonthroughouttheyearwithyouasweconnuetofocusonourmathemacsprograminthe
ElementarySchoolin2014/15.

Calling All Basketball Players!
We need players for the parent team for this year's ISM Community Basketball League. Any parent of an ISM student
is eligible to play.
The league is tentatively scheduled to begin on September 8. All games will be played at ISM, Monday through Thurs-
day, at 6:45pm. We will be competing against the Alumni, Faculty, Security, Canteen, and other department teams.
