tudents learn lessons each

day. While many of these
lessons pertain to their
coursework, kids pick up much
more than book smarts from
school, where kids first learn to
cultivate friendships and build
lasting relationships.
In addition to a new cur-
riculum, new teachers and new
schedules, kids also might
make new friends once a
school year begins. While
some familiar faces carry
through from grade to grade,
chances are youngsters will
meet new students who will
soon become good friends.
While many kids find it easy to
make new friends, others
might need some assistance so
they can make the most of
opportunities to socialize and
form friendships that might
last a lifetime.
Offer opportunities for
socialization. Children should be
given the opportunity to explore
friendships outside of the class-
room where peer pressure might
not be so prevalent. Establish a
carpool or invite a classmate over
for a play date. Unstructured
time to play or get to know each
other is a great way to establish
friendships. Invite new children
over each time to see which
friendships are the strongest, but
make sure you are not pushing a
friendship on your child.
Discover common interests.
One of the quickest ways to build
friendships is through common
interests, says Kirk Martin, a
behavioral therapist and author.
Encourage your child to join a
club or sports group where he or
she can meet other kids with
similar interests. Sometimes
finding reasons to talk other
children is the most difficult
step to making new friends.
Sharing a common interest
removes this barrier.
Teach proper manners.
Children who are polite, well-
mannered and know how to
follow direction are better
equipped to attract friends.
Children who misbehave may
be shunned by other kids and
their parents who do not want
the hassle of an unruly young-

ith our President
playing yet anoth-
er vacation round
of golf while our Mexican bor-
der resembles Swiss cheese;
our State Department contin-
ues debating about what to do
in the Middle East concerning
American interests and jour-
nalist hostages, further para-
lyzed over how to contain
ISIS. On the domestic front
some pundits are predicting
another stock market and
housing crash! In addition,
everyone understands that
interest rates must increase in
the near-term putting pressure
on corporate, municipal and
federal bond valuations and
yield. The government con-
tinues to profess that inflation
is fewer than 2% yet; when I
look at our personal grocery
receipts I calculate its more
like 8%.
Incomes of Americans
have remained stagnant over
the last few years, making the
grocery bill impact even worse
yet. Flip on the TV and the
headlines are either domestic
police brutality with racial
profiling or about ISIS,
Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Gaza
and their joint hatred for
Israel, America, Jews and
Christians alike! Our govern-
ment hasnt learned yet that it
cannot negotiate or bargain
with people who launch 4,000
rockets into civilian popula-
tions or for no discernable rea-
son, behead an innocent man,
claiming retaliation for a sup-
posed event that James Foley,
a photo journalist, had no part
in or anything to do with.
Perhaps world events
were too much for the late
great Robin Williams to deal
with, adding to his depression
and reasons to end his own
life. Isnt it interesting how
the media delved into Mr.
Williams death with non-stop
coverage for over 72 hours. I
believe this to be a distraction
tactic away from the foibles of
our President, who clearly has
demonstrated a unique clear
concise foreign and domestic
policy of golf and vacations
when dealing with these
major areas of concern. The
man is obviously not a student
of history as evidenced by his
rapid withdrawal from Iraq,
resulting in the formation and
proliferation of ISIS (the
Islamic State of Iraq and
Syria) and now our Vietnam-
like reentry into the same
region, a few advisors at a time
with a scaled-back air defense
initiative under the guise of
humanitarian aid for the
innocent people being slaugh-
tered, raped and tortured, a
genocide taking place right
before our very eyes. If you are
going to fight a war to save
innocent lives, you must be
prepared to commit an ample
percentage of your troops and
resources to do so, otherwise
its a losing and more costly
battle for us and the people we
are trying to save.
By the Presidents own
ambitions of appeasing his
constituents, he felt it best to
vacate the area leaving the
region without any definitive
military, government or direc-
tion. Whereas the leader of
Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu,
is and has been informing the
US public that ISIS, Islamic
Jihad, Hamas and the Muslim
brotherhood are coming to a
theater near you. Obamas
actions led to the proliferation
of ISIS, a group more power-
ful, financed and organized
than Al-Qaeda could ever
hope to be. When the US
acts as the worlds police force
and enters a region, it must
plan a properly timed exit or
make the decision to put a
long-term military base there
after the conflict ends to keep
the peace and back the gov-
ernment left after the job is
done.
All of these national and
domestic news stories involv-
ing mass illegal border cross-
ings, violence, looting, riots
and beheadings have been a
tremendous distraction for the
American public to attend to
and focus on their goals of
increasing their lifestyles and
standard of living, to secure
their financial futures, to pro-
vide for their childrens educa-
tion, marriage and first home
purchase, to focus on a better
financial life now and in the
future.
TV and Movie actor
William Devane explains on
national television while
parked on his motorcycle, why
and where he is buying gold as
a hedge against a domestic
financial meltdown. Fresh in
our minds are the meltdowns
of 2008 and the period
between 2000 and 2002. We
may look no further than
1994 and 1990 and just three
years before that in 1987 was
the BIG ONE where the
DJIA dropped 23% in a single
day. Might we be nearing
another year like 2008?
Its not difficult to see
how one can be easily dis-
tracted from their financial
road by either headline news,
political news, celebrity news,
lest we forget our own person-
al and family issues along the
way. We cannot afford to lose
our financial goals and direc-
tions, the basic tenants of why
we are going to, or went to
work every day of our lives.
We must not be distracted
from our goal of becoming
financially independent. In
retirement would you rather
be dependent on your past
employer, the federal govern-
ment or your children, per-
haps winning the lottery? Or
must you be self: Funded,

Sufficient? In this authors
opinion, I believe the answer
is more than obvious, cap-
tured by the phrase, If it is to
be, its up to me!

C
irca 1991. When I
was a kid, I was a huge
baseball fan- and still
am, by the way. Growing up
my favorite player was a guy
named Graig Nettles, third
baseman for the Yankees in
the 70s and early 80s. This guy
provided me with a lot of
thrills growing up and he was
to me, The Man.
In the early 90s I was
working on my first book,
Safe at Home, which afford-
ed me the privilege of being
on the field and in the locker
room of Major League
Baseball teams in order to
interview players. Graig was a
coach for the Yankees at the
time.
As I was standing on the
field talking to some of the
guys, Graig walked by. My
heart jumped, but I couldnt
bring myself to engage in a
conversation. I couldnt even
muster up the courage to say
hello. Im most definitely not
much of a shy guy, and I cer-
tainly was not intimidated by
him. So why the hesitation?
The reason I chose not to
talk to Graig Nettles was
because I did not want my
childhood icon to turn out to
be a sham. Graig Nettles was
so built up in my mind upon
the shallow image of the
Yankees third baseman, but
what if the real Graig Nettles
turned out to be a jerk? Im
sure Mr. Nettles is a great guy,
but I couldnt bring myself to
take the chance.
In retrospect, it was pret-
ty lame of me not to go up and
talk to the guy who was at one
time my hero. Makes me
think, how much do we really
know about the people we
look up to? Most of the time
we fail to recognize that they
are human, just like us, and
that humans sometimes fail.
We put so much stock in oth-
ers that when they do crash
they take us down with them!
Who do you look up to and

their dogs so much that they
actually look like them! Its
the same thing for humans.

orkdays have a way
of flying by, and
many men and
women find themselves won-
dering where the time went at
the end of a typical day. A
workday filled with meetings
and the obligations of a career
is only half the story for work-
ing parents, who upon leaving
the office must manage the
obligations of their families.
With such hectic sched-
ules, its no wonder so many
working parents find them-
selves wishing there was more
time in the day. While there
may be no way to make a day
25 hours long, the following
time-saving measures can
increase the time you have to
unwind and relax at the end of

Save those leftovers. At
the end of a good meal, leftover
food will either find its way to

Simple ways to find more time in your day
Ingredients
1 tablespoon sesame oil
8 bone-in chicken thighs (2
pounds), skinned
Cooking spray
1/4 cup lower-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
5 teaspoons hoisin sauce
1 tablespoon minced peeled fresh
ginger
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon cold water
2 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds
2 tablespoons sliced green onions
Preparation
1.Heat a large nonstick skillet
over medium-high heat. Add
oil to pan; swirl to coat. Add
chicken; cook 4 minutes on
each side or until golden.
Transfer chicken to a 4-quart
electric slow cooker coated
with cooking spray.
2.Combine soy sauce and next
5 ingredients (through garlic);
pour over chicken. Cover and
cook on LOW for 2 hours or
until chicken is tender.
Transfer chicken to a platter;
keep warm.
3.Pour cooking liquid through
a sieve into a small saucepan
to measure 1 cups. Discard
solids. Bring cooking liquid to
a boil over medium-high heat.
Combine cornstarch and 1
tablespoon cold water in a
small bowl. Add cornstarch
mixture to sauce, stirring with
a whisk until blended. Return
to a boil. Cook 1 minute or
until sauce thickens, stirring
constantly. Serve sauce over
chicken. Sprinkle with sesame
seeds and green onions.

ome people prefer cats,
while others loyalty lies
with dogs. Dogs and
cats have different personali-
ties, which is what draws peo-
ple to them for one reason or
another. Though different,
cats and dogs alike need to
visit the veterinarian for rou-
tine checkups. Still, it seems
dogs head to the vet more fre-
quently than cats.
Organizations like the
American Association of
Feline Practitioners and
others have uncovered
the disparity in care
among dogs and cats.
Cats are less likely to
receive veterinary health-
care than dogs, as
research shows that cats
make up about one-quar-
ter of patients at small
animal veterinary clinics.
Cats have long been sec-
ond to dogs as the most popu-
lar pet. But cats may be edging
out dogs as the preferred pet,
particularly because they seem
to need less attention and
maintenance. But these same
qualities that make them
attractive pets could be put-
ting their health at risk. Cats
that tend to fend for them-
selves act aloof and may not
give their owners any indica-
tion that they are sick. As a
result, pet owners can become
complacent about cat care,
simply because they dont
spend as much time with cats
as they may with a dog.
Dr. Katy Allen, a veteri-
narian and owner of
Canterbury Tails Veterinary
Services, has said dogs are an
in-your-face kind of pet.
People tend to interact more
with their dogs by taking
them for walks and playing
with them. So its more
noticeable when something is
not right with a dog. Cats,
however, are more stoic.
When they dont feel well,
cats will run away and hide.
Changing vaccine sched-
ules for many animals may
also affect how often cats visit
the vet. Immunizations have
changed so that some shots
can be offered every two or
three years instead of annual-
ly. Therefore, pet owners may
not see the need to visit the
vet unless the animal is due
for a shot. This can put a cat
at risk because it is usually
during routine exams when
vets uncover something that
the pet owner may not have
noticed on his or her own.
The American Animal
Hospital Association urges cat
owners to remember that
every year that passes for a cat
is equivalent to several years
for a person, making it imper-
ative for cats to receive well-
ness examinations, including
laboratory testing, once a year.
Healthy senior cats should be
examined once every six
months, as illnesses and
changes in an older cats
health can progress quickly.
What can you expect at a
cats wellness exam? A veteri-
narian will go over a number
of things at an annual well-
ness visit. Here is a list of
some things to expect: discus-
sion of the animals medical
history, testing of the cats
stool, examination of the cats
nose and nasal passages for
signs of infection, examina-
tion of the gums, teeth and
tongue, examination of the
ears to check for mites or any
discharge, examination of the
eyes, examination of the body
for parasites or skin disease,
examination to determine if
there are any abnormal
growths or tenderness, exami-
nation of heart and lung
sounds, and a collection of
blood to test for heartworms,
feline leukemia and feline
immunodeficiency virus.
If any abnormalities are
suspected, more intensive
testing may be prescribed.
Cats are prized for their
ability to be self-sufficient and
not need the same level of
attention as most dogs.
However, these traits should
not preclude them from
receiving routine medical
wellness exams.

with nails, screws and hang-
ing hardware, perhaps creat-
ing more holes in their walls
than is necessary to get items
level and in the right spots.
Instead of playing a guessing
game of figuring out where
the hanging holes or hooks
are located on the back of
items, use your office equip-
ment to make life easier.
Make a copy of the back of
the item you're trying to hang
with a printer/scanner or a
copy machine, making sure to
copy the item to full scale.
Print the copy at full size and
use it to drill the hanging
holes. If you don't have access
to a copy machine or scanner,
use a piece of tape to measure
the distance between the
hanging holes on the back of
the frame. Stick the tape to
the wall and then put your
nails or screws at the ends of
the tape.

create a household budget for

Get a grip on your
finances. Before setting a fam-
ily budget, heads of the house-
hold should first get a firm
grasp of their finances.
Determine household income,
fixed monthly expenses (i.e.,
mortgage, car payments, etc.),
luxury expenses (i.e., cable
television service, dining out,
etc.), and outstanding con-
sumer debt. Once you get a
clear picture of whats coming
in and whats going out, you
can determine whether or not
you are making sound deci-
sions.
Set a goal. Once finances
have been examined, you can
then set a goal. Goals will
change as your financial situa-
tion changes, but let your
existing financial situation
influence the goal you initial-
ly set. For example, if an
examination of your financial
situation revealed a consider-
able amount of consumer
debt, then a goal of eradicat-
ing that debt is a great place to
start, and part of setting the
goal is developing a course of
action to make it a reality.

pollution levels. Those pollu-
tant levels rise in a poorly venti-
lated home because not enough
outdoor air is making its way
into a home to dilute emissions
from indoor sources of pollu-
tion. In addition, in a poorly
ventilated home, indoor air pol-
lutants are not being carried out
of the home, leaving the pollu-
tants to linger and potentially
putting the health of the home's
residents at risk. Though it
might seem counterintuitive to
allow outdoor air into a home
during winter, when such air
tends to be at its coldest, such
outdoor air can protect a home's
inhabitants from the immediate
effects of indoor air pollution,
which include irritation of the
eyes, nose and throat, as well as
headaches, dizziness and fatigue.
Long-term effects of prolonged
exposure to indoor air pollution
can include respiratory disease,
heart disease and cancer. But
homeowners who want toin-
crease outdoor air infiltration in
their homes do not have to
open the windows even when
temperatures dip. A simple
inspection of mechanical venti-
lation systems, such as bath-
room and kitchen fans and air
handling systems that employ
fans and ducts to remove indoor
air and distribute filtered and
conditioned outdoor air
throughout a home, may be all
that's necessary to ensure indoor
air stays healthy during the win-
ter. If such systems are in need of
repair, homeowners should
ensure those repairs are made
prior to the arrival of winter.

not fixed, like grocery bills
and gas. Staying within budg-
et for such expenses every
week can lead to substantial
savings by the end of each
month, and its far easier to
save that money when youre
monitoring those expenses
every seven days instead of
every 30 days.
Consider long-term goals.
Long-term goals should be
considered when establishing
a family budget. Even if
money is tight, you likely can
still find room in your budget
to save for your future. The
goal of establishing a family
budget is to ensure money is
being well spent, and con-
tributing to your familys
financial future is money well
spent. Allocate funds for
retirement account contribu-
tions and future educational
expenses as well. Even small
contributions can add up to a
significant amount of money
over time.
