The study was done by six lecturers from different universities. The focus of the study
was to find out whether different levels of nutritional knowledge of pregnant women are
significantly associated with healthy attitude and food practices. There were many pregnant
mothers who neglect their nutritional intake during pregnancy. They were also had a lack of
information about foods nutrition. This has prompted a study conducted to determine the
relationship between food and nutrition information health attitudes and practices during
pregnancy. This study also can reveal whether pregnant womens nutritional knowledge can
result in healthy behavior including attitude and practice

Nowadays, I can see that peoples health is threatened by the diseases that come from
food intake. Maternal health and pregnancy should be taken care of healthy eating practices are
necessary to ensure the mother and her unborn baby in good condition. Attitudes and practices
of good health are necessary so as not to have health problems in the future. We have a world
class and modern medical technology but it does not guarantee the people can live without any
diseases or illness especially for the pregnant mothers. Therefore, the lack of knowledge about
nutrition, behavior and health practices by pregnant women should be seriously considered in
order to achieve optimum health for both mother and child.

In this study, there were 400 pregnant women participated as the samples. The pregnant
women who were attending the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic for antenatal care were
selected. The majority of the selected women were Malay which represents 98%. Based on
2003 Malaysian Adult Nutrition, Malay women had the highest mean BMI at 25.39 kg/m
compared to Chinese and Indian. Most of the Malay women had the highest intake of energy.
The data collection was collected from September 2010 to August 2011. The samples
asked to sign the consent form and been explained about the procedure of the research. Based
on the article, the instruments used was a set of questionnaire developed by Technical Working
Group on Research. The questionnaires contained 57 questions including 8 demographic
questions, 21 items for knowledge, 8 for attitude and 12 practice questions with 3 and 8
subdivisions. There were 5 main components in the questionnaire which are nutrient function,
energy of food, nutrient insufficient, food selection and supplies of nutrients. Each sample had
to answer the questions of nutrient knowledge which had 4 choices and 1 mark given to every
correct answer. For the attitude question, it had various types of answer which 3 point were
given, 2 marks for favorable responses and zero mark for unfavorable answers. I can see there
were six open ended questions as stated in the journal. The samples were required to list the
names of foods or snack or types of activity during free time. Every 2 healthy answer out of 3
were given 1 point while zero point was given for unhealthy answers. Based on the
categorization, I can see that, the researchers considered attitude as negative for percentages of
0-50%, moderate 51-74% and good for percentages above 75%.

Based on the study, it showed that the nutrition knowledge was important and it was
significantly associated with healthier choice of foods for their daily meal, drinks and other
type of foods. Nevertheless, the study showed significant association between knowledge and
unhealthy types of physical activity during leisure time. There were some factors influenced a
persons nutrition habits. The factors were cost of food, limited income, being busy and not
having enough time for preparation and others. The study also suggested the people to get extra
knowledge of nutrition through the media, newspaper, magazine, books or academic resources.
I find this study is very useful to everyone. We need to find the information of the
nutrition and we also need to know what are the best foods should we take. It is related to this
course and it is possible to apply in daily life. I have to be selective in foods consuming and it
should be in my mind at all times. During my physical education lesson, I always ask my
students to be extra careful in taking foods for their meals. I think, it will be better if the study
expand to all people including children, adult, men and women. It will help us to keep
reminding people about the healthy nutrition.
