CSR is a process in which companies apply to their procedures better

practices with the finality of taking care of the world, their employees and their
customers.as it can be notice, CSR is key to the improvement of companies
and it must be applied in all entities. But not all the time companies have CSR
as a main goal in their daily basis and it is when the problem begins.

Nowadays, companies all over the world are driven to find better
practices to improve their product and maximize their profits. Nevertheless,
there is a thin line between what is legal and what is moral to do in business.
The purpose of this paper is to see both sides, to identify and justify the
economic and moral argument for corporate social responsibility, and what
should be the best way to proceed in business.

A clear example of this conflict of interest is the case of Chevron.
Chevron is a multinational company, its mayor business is based in the energy
sector.it is one of the largest companies in the whole world. This company
operates worldwide in more than 140 countries and is involved in different areas
such as oil, gas, refining, power generations and much more.
So this gigantic corporation has being having issues whit population all
over the world because of its bad practices in the oil sector.one of the cases
occurred in Ecuador. From 1972 to 1993, Texaco/ Chevron operated in
LagoAgrio situated in the Ecuadorian amazon. During those years, The
Company worked without taking precautions to avoid environmental damage
even though there where population living near the place where the company
operated. As a consequence of that, Ecuadorian farmers
and indigenous residents accused Chevron, of making residents ill and
damaging forests and riversfor polluting the more than 480 thousand hectares
of land in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle. Ecuadorian law found evidence of
gigantic damage caused by all the years Chevron operated in the Ecuadorian
amazon, it was more than 16 billion gallons of toxic water mixed in the river.
According to an article in Anarchiel (NA), thousands of barrels of crude
poured and more than 800 Waste pits around the urban zone in zones where
there was communities settled. The community sued Chevron for extensive
environmental damage caused by these operations, which have sickened
thousands of Ecuadorians and polluted the Amazon rainforest.
After a long trial, Ecuadorian Court failed at favor of the community but at
that time, chevron have had no longer operations or assets in Ecuador to make
them pay for the environmental damaged the have caused. Ecuadorwas not
conformed by chevron not paying for their actions, so the president decides to
take this case tothe US nation.
Pablo Fajardo was the leader of the global litigation program for
Ecuadorians said:
"The honest efforts of the Amazonian plaintiffs are constantly met by the
bad faith of Chevron, who having promised U.S. courts it would abide by
the decisions of the Ecuadorian courts, now hides behind corporate veils
and other formalities to avoid pay what is owed. This attitude prolongs the
suffering of the victims of the oil company, and sets a dangerous
precedent for future transnational polluters.
Until today, there has not being any resolution about chevron case but the
Ecuadorian population doesnt forget.

People that were harmed by Chevron pollution are still living in the same
polluted place and are suffering from serious illnesses. Locals are suffering from
different kinds of cancers(skin, eye, and nose), miscarriages and birth defects
like malformations. These problemsare also presenting in the next generation of
citizens (www.chevrontoxico.com/, the internet).

This is not the only case of Chevron harming the environment. It has
caused in Angola, the same damages. But what is surprising is that in
Chevrons web page talks about CSR. It says:
Affordable energy is a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity. Our
companys values drive us to provide that energy responsibly while
protecting the environment and working with our partners to strengthen
communities. Because our success is tied to the success of our
communities.

How can this premise be true if people around the world are dying
because of their bad practices? If they dont pay to make it up for them. This is
the moral and social impact we are talking about. And this is the actual
dilemma. CSR is more than just paper work, more than just talking about the
companies ethics and the goals. CSR is about action. Doing what they preach.
Putting in practice the norms they have set.But once again in this company
weighted more the economic impact than the social impact. And that`s what
they did make money without caring the shareholders. As I said
previously,Chevron is one of the most profitable companies around the world.
This decision of doing the good or making money is really a thin line between
the good or bad. This conflict always will be in this kind of companies were they
mainly operations are related to fragile ecosystems. So the decisions rely in if it
is fair or not to make money if Im not taking care of the working place. It will
always depend on the direction board in every company and what they think is
fair or not in business.
Another major company that is going to be analyzed in this paper is
Monsanto. Monsanto is a very successful company situated in Missouri known
for its involvement in the modification of the seeds to improve agriculture.
During the years, Monsanto is innovating plants and seeds and now is one of
the most important companies in the development of genetic modified seeds.
This company has being toughly criticized due to potential or actual
danger of their products on human health, animals, plants and the environment
in general. Monsanto With his obsession with transgenics has been hampering
the progress for too long. Genetic engineering used today in agriculture crops is
crude and outdated technology.
According to Ecoticias (2013), it is a threat to the environment and
health, and does not offers the solutions that agriculture desperately needs. It's
time to make room for other cutting-edge biotechnologies and ecological
techniques that can bring real benefits to farmers and consumers.

Once again it is difficult to compare the social and the financial impact.
Monsanto is a company that has revenue of 11822 billion, an operating income
2.502 billion dollars and more than 21.400 employees .the social benefits are
less strong than the financial benefits they are receiving for the communities.
Farmers use this seeds because it allows them to have more profitable crops.
And Monsanto will continue produce them because there is demand.
As a conclusion we can notice than companies are driven because of
results. These companies showed previously are clear examples that
companies that are productive can also be very harmful for the environment.
CSR is a tool for all companies, but the initiative must come from inside the
company to have effective and ecofriendly results. CSR is effective but it must
be practiced consciously otherwise it is just a bunch of paragraphs that nobody
reads or are.
It is important for companies to determine these policies and make them
priority number one in their daily basis. If so, companies can have profit but also
will be taking care of the world, the consumer, the suppliers and everyone will
be benefited.
