1. Consider the integration of the function f(x) = 1/x 2 + 1/x 1+ x + x 2 over the interval x = 2 to x = 4.
(a) (3 marks) Use Simpsons 1/3 rule with h = 0.5 to approximate the above integral and find the exact error.
(b) (3 marks) Repeat part (a) with the Trapezoidal rule.
(c) (4 marks) If the approximate error is to be less than 10 -3 find the value of h needed for the Trapezoidal rule.

CoE 3SK3 Page 2 of 6 2. Consider the differential equation dy/dx = -3y+1 with initial conditions y(-.2) = 1/3 + (2/3) e -0.6 and y(0) = 1.
(a) (4 marks) Use Eulers method and Heuns predictor-corrector method (with two iterations) to find the approximate values of y(0.2) and y(0.4) using a step size of h = 0.2.
(b) (3 marks) Find the value of h if the maximum truncation error in y(h) using Eulers method is to be 0.01 given that y(0) = 1.
(c) (3 marks) Find the analytical solution for the above equation and evaluate the exact values of y(0.2) and y(0.4) and comment on your results from part (a).

3. Consider fitting the function f(x) = ba bx to the data (x i , f(x i )), i = 1, 2, , n. That is, a and b are unknowns that have to be found from a sequence of n known data points (x i , f(x i )).
(a) (4 marks) Show that the above nonlinear curve-fitting problem can be written as linear regression and obtain the two simultaneous linear equations.
(b) (4 marks) Given the following data points, find the best values for a and b.

(c) (2 marks) Find the standard error and the correlation coefficient for the above fit.

Figure 1 (a) (5 marks) Derive 4 independent linear equations in terms of I 1 , I 2 , I 3 and I 4 in the form of Ax = b.
(b) (5 marks) Solve for the above 4 unknowns using LU decomposition.

(a) (4 marks) Use Newtons method to find an expression for the optimum value of x and comment on its convergence.
(b) (2 marks) Find the optimum value of x for a 1 =1, a 2 =2, a 3 =3, a 4 =4, a 5 =5 (that is, n=5).
(c) (4 marks) Use the Golden-section method to find the optimum value starting with x l =0.1 and x u =1.0 (perform only the first three iterations).

(a) (4 marks) Use a second order Newtons interpolating polynomial to find the approximate value f(0.5). Compare it with the corresponding value interpolated using Lagrange polynomial.
(b) (3 marks) Given an additional value f(0.6) = 0.6039, estimate the approximate error in the above evaluation.
(c) (3 marks) Comment on the difference between polynomial regression and interpolation problems.
