All the regions destinations are within easy day-trip range of Seoul, although to get the
most from some places its best to stay overnight or even longer. Incheon International
Airports excellent transport connections and location on the island of Yeongjong-do means
that you neednt even go into Seoul first to visit many places.
The ancient dolmen (simple stone tombs) scattered across the island of Ganghwa-do
are proof of the areas long and fascinating history. It was here that the hermit kingdom
started to be forced out of its self-imposed isolation in the mid-19th century. The resulting mingling of cultures several decades later in nearby Incheon can still be viewed in the
ports colourful Chinatown.
For a chilling reminder of cold-war animosities, hop on a DMZ-bound tour bus and catch
glimpses of North Korea from the Joint Security Area. Impressive fortifications (minus the barbed
wire and landmines) are the principal draw of Suwon, while in Icheon the lures are a chance to
buy beautiful Korean pottery or wallow in hot-spring baths. Travellers with children can enjoy
Seoul Grand Park, Anyang Art Park and Everland Resort Koreas answer to Disneyland.

Encircling Seoul are the province of Gyeonggi-do and the metropolitan area of Incheongwangyeok-si, which includes the expanding city of Incheon and the nearby islands flaking
into the muddy West Sea like crumbs from a doughnut. Here lie illustrious historical sites
several of them World Heritage listed timeless temples, cultural villages, sandy beaches and
tree-covered mountains that are crying out to be climbed in summer and skied in winter.

History
As an important place since the Three
Kingdoms period (p26) over 2000 years ago,
the areas history is practically wrapped up
with that of the peninsula, although it really started to come to prominence with the
ascendency of the Goryeo dynasty in the 10th
century. The provinces current border with
North Korea makes it a front line for this
war, and even today tunnel-detection teams
operate in hopes of fending off North Korean
incursions.
Gyeonggi-dos designation as a province
dates from after the Korean War. The seat of
regional government has been Suwon (p155)
since 1967. Incheon-gwangyeok-si was hived
off from Gyeonggi-do in 1981 and continues

BUKHANSAN NATIONAL PARK
This granite peakstudded national park (%031873 2791; http://bukhan.knps.or.kr) is so close to Seoul
that its possible to visit by subway which
partly accounts for why it sees over 10 million
visitors a year. It offers sweeping mountaintop
vistas, maple leaves, rushing streams and remote temples. Even though it covers nearly 80
sq km, the parks proximity to the city means
it gets crowded, especially on weekends.
The parks highest peak is Baegundae
(836m), while rock climbers particularly enjoy
Insubong (810m), a free-climbers dream with
some of the best multipitch climbing in Asia
and routes of all grades. Tree-shaded valleys
with cooling streams also provide a chance to
wallow in nature for those whod rather not
hike so far or so high. Camping (from W3000
per night) is possible in summer or you can
stay in basic mountain huts (W5000).
Dobongsan Hike
For this hike, largely through tree-shaded ravines, add time for a picnic lunch. Moderate
fitness is required.
Take subway Line 1 north from Seoul to
Dobongsan station. It takes 45 minutes from
City Hall if your train goes all the way (not
all do).
Exit the station and follow the other hikers
across the road, past food stalls and hikinggear shops (dont get distracted by all the
great deals!). After about 15 minutes you
should reach the Dobong Park information
Center (1; %909 0497; h7.30am-6pm), which has
a basic hiking map in English. A path left
goes to Uiam, but walk straight on for the
3km, 1-hour hike up to Jaunbong (

board specially designated buses to travel into
the JSA towards the collection of blue-painted
UN buildings that constitute Panmunjom.
Official meetings are still sometimes held here
and in the main conference room, mikes on
the tables constantly record everything said.
Straddling the ceasefire line, this is the only
place where you can safely walk into North
Korea. South Korean soldiers stand guard inside and out in a modified taekwondo stance
an essential photo op and their North
Korean counterparts keep a steady watch,
usually, but not always, from a distance.

SKIING IN GYEONGGI-DO
GYEONGGI-DO &
INCHEON-GWANGYEOK-SI
Come the snow season, usually from December to February, there is a handful of ski resorts within
easy reach of Seoul (an hour or less by bus). Usually there are free shuttle buses from Seoul see the
websites for details, but you might also want to look into travel-agency package deals that include
transport, accommodation, ski-equipment hire and lift passes. The main resorts to head to are:
Bears Town Resort (%031-540 5000; www.bearstown.com) Located 50 minutes northeast of Seoul, this
resort has 11 slopes, two sledding hills and nine lifts all named after bears. Accommodation includes a youth hostel
and condominium; facilities include a supermarket, heated pool, sauna, bowling alley and tennis courts. Englishspeaking instructors, snowboarding and night skiing are available. USO, the American troops activities organisation
(see p118), runs ski tours to this resort and anyone is welcome to join.
Jisan Resort (%02-3442 0322, 031-638 8460; www.jisanresort.co.kr) It can get busy at this popular resort,
56km south of Seoul and a 40-minute bus ride from Gangnan. Jisan has five lifts, a variety of slopes including some
for snowboarding, English-speaking instructors, night skiing and condo accommodation. In 2009 a big outdoor rock
festival was held here in July; it may become an annual event.
Yangji Pine Resort (%02-744 2001, 031-338 2001; www.pineresort.com) Around 40 minutes drive southeast
of Seoul, this resort has six slopes, one sledding hill, six lifts and great views from the top. Accommodation is in a
youth hostel or condo-style hotel, the latter having a heated pool and bowling alley.
Completed in 1626, Namhan Sanseong (%031742 7856), a temple-fortress complex and wall
20km southeast of downtown Seoul, is famous for its beautiful pine forests, wildflowers
and oaks. It once guarded the citys southern
entrance, while Bukhan Sanseong guarded
the northern approaches. Buddhist monks
soldiers rather than pacifists in those days
lived here and kept watch. Numerous hiking
options wind through the forests, some of
them paralleling the old fortress walls.
To get here take subway Line 8 to Namhan
Sanseong. Leave by Exit 1 and take a bus or taxi
to Namhan Sanseong-ipgu, the park entrance.
ICHEON
pop 198,619
Dont come here expecting picturesque riverside huts or wispy-bearded characters labouring over kick wheels: the Icheon Ceramic
Village (Icheon Doyechon) is a busy town with
a main street full of traffic, and the many potteries are spread out over a wide urban area.
The lack of rural aesthetics is compensated
for by the huge selection of wares, making it a
fascinating destination for ceramics lovers.
Catch a taxi (W5000) or local bus 114
(W1300) from outside the bus terminal and
get off after 15 minutes near Songpa Pottery
( ; %031-633 6587; www.songpadoye.com;
that has ultramodern facilities. Treat yourself to hot, warm and cold baths, a waterfall
bath, and rice-wine, herbal, pinewood and
fruit baths.
Sleeping
If you do need to stay over, there are numerous options to choose from, including plenty
of inexpensive motels.
Now Its the Moon Time (%031-633 7373; r from
W45,000; ai) Gets points for the crazy name
(its also known as the IMT Hotel), but this
love hotel is spotlessly clean and very tastefully done, with heated toilet seats, jacuzzistyle baths, a DVD collection (not only racy
titles, but normal ones too) and popcorn!
Add W10,000 to the rates on Friday and
Saturday.
Miranda Hotel (; %031-633 2001;
www.mirandahotel.com; r/ste W173,000/300,000; ai)
Eating
Icheon is also famous for its rice, which some
claim is so good that it needs no side dishes.
The good news is that it is indeed pretty tasty
and that its always dished up with plenty of
side dishes at the following recommended
places.
Donggang (; %031-631 8833; meals from
W10,000; h9.30am-10pm) On the main road near
the entrance to Seolbong Park, this restaurant
looks modern from the outside but inside is
decorated with traditional giwa (tiled) roof
details and paper and wood screens. The set
menus are reasonably priced.
Gomijeong (; % 031-634 4811; meals
W10,000-30,000; h10.30am-9.30pm) On a hillside
outside town, Gomijeong serves a wonderful assortment of preset courses that vary by
price. The paper screens, floor seating and
flower-pattern wallpapered walls all make this
a treat worth taking a taxi for.

Incheon is a sprawling city its notional centre is around the Incheon Bus Terminal but
theres little of major interest here for visitors. The most interesting area to explore is
Chinatown (see right). Songdo to the south
is also worth making time for, if only to witness the rising from the sea of the massive
new Songdo International City and Incheon

Yeongjong-do
Although Yeongjong-do is home to Koreas
busiest international airport, its (best) western
beaches arent disturbed by air traffic. Eulwangni
Beach ( ) is the most popular
even when the tide goes out, theres more sand
than mud. Many motels and a resort have been
built here, as well as restaurants and stores.

have snazzy triangular whirlpool baths, desktop PCs and fax machines. A golf driving range
is on the roof. Advance reservations can drop
the price by W20,000 or so.
EATING
When the Yeongjong-do Wharf Market reopens youll be able to buy fish, prawns, blue
crabs and other shellfish and take them to
the neighbouring restaurants to have them
cooked and served.
Keunjip (; %032-752 1442; Airport Town Square;

place, on the corner of the new towns main

Muui-do
Much less developed than Yeongjong-do is
Muui-do, which can be reached via a fiveminute ferry trip (W3000 return, half-hourly
until 7pm, 6pm in winter) from Jamjin-do.
For details of how to get to Jamjin-do from
Yeongjong-do see p167.
Stepping onto Keunmuri wharf on Muuido, you are greeted by seafood restaurants,
along with the island bus and minibus taxi. To
visit Hanagae Beach ( ; %032751 8833; www.hanagae.co.kr; adult/child W2000/1000) take
the bus (W1000) or negotiate a taxi price.
This beach, the islands best, has plenty of
golden sand, a handful of seafood restaurants
and basic beach huts under the pine trees
or on the beach. The chalet-style house on
the beach was used in the Korean TV drama
Stairway to Heaven. Just beyond it is the start
of a 2.5km hike through dense woods to the
top of Horyonggoksan (; 244m).
Another option from Keunmuri wharf
is to walk for a few minutes to Keunmuri, a
delightfully traditional fishing village. Crab
pots and fishing nets lie around while red
peppers dry in the sun. From here its a 1km
walk over the hill to Silmi Beach (

Jeondeung-sa
The Tripitaka Koreana (see the boxed text,
p208), 80,000 wooden blocks of Buddhist scriptures, was carved between 1235 and 1251 at this
attractive temple (%032-937 0125; www.jeondeungsa

in the islands southeast. You can do a temple
stay here (p388) and sip traditional teas at the
Bugeun-ni Dolmen
The biggest dolmen (admission free; h24hr) on
Ganghwa-do is an impressive sight and has a
top stone weighing more than 50 tonnes. Cheesy
small-scale replicas of other ancient relics such
as Stonehenge and Easter Island statues can be
seen at the parklike site too, where a new interpretation centre was being built during our visit.
Take a bus (W100, 15 minutes) or taxi (W2500,
10 minutes) here from Ganghwa-eup.
Oepo-ri
If you have been yearning for a close look
at seagulls, come to Oepo-ri, a picturesque
fishing village on the west coast about 13km
from Ganghwa-eup. Flocks of the birds
swoop around the ferries between Oepo-ri to

Bomun-sa
Situated high (steep walk, many stairs, catch
your breath at the top) in the pine-forested hills
of Seongmo-do, this temple (%032-933 8271; adult/
child W2000/1000; h8am-7pm) is a highlight of a visit
to this area. It has some superbly ornate painting on the eaves of its buildings. The grotto and
10m-tall Buddha rock carving are standouts.
Korean women come here in hopes of conceiving sons, and the Korean grandmothers you see
arent praying for sons for themselves but for
their daughters. Minbak and restaurants are
dotted around the islands coastline, but you
can make this a day trip from Seoul if you dont
mind getting up early and returning late.
Ferries (%932 6007) depart Oepo-ri for
Seongmo-do (adult/child W2000/1000, 10
minutes, every 30 minutes) between 7am and
9pm. The ferry transports cars too (W14,000 return). On Seongmo-do a bus (W1000, hourly on
weekdays, every 30 minutes on weekends) takes
you near the temple but its a steep climb up.
Sleeping
Apart from the options mentioned following,
consider bedding down at one of the several
minbak on Seongmo-do, or doing a temple
stay at Jeondeung-sa (opposite).
Ganghwa Youth Hostel (
; %032-933 8891; www.gh-yh.co.kr; Oepo-ri; dm/f
W12,000/70,000; s) Ondol rooms are the deal at
this typical youth hostel, which is a kilometre
or so north of Oepo-ri, set up on a hill past
some ramshackle motel buildings.
Eating
Gourmands flock to Ganghwa-do to sample seafood, with different fishing villages on the island
renowned for certain types. In Deurih-mi (
), on the east coast between the Ganghwa and
Choji bridges, a dozen restaurants specialise
in eel (), which can be served raw, salted,
marinated in a special sauce and tastiest of all
grilled over charcoal. Seonsu () on the
southeast coast is the place to head for herring
served raw sashimi style.
Ganghwa-eup Bus Station restaurants (%032934-1239; meals W2000-6000; h10am-9pm) On the
2nd floor of the terminal several places offer
various inexpensive Korean meals. Theres a
coffee shop as well (open 8.30am to 8pm).
Oepo Hweojjib (; %032-932 6662; meals
W30,000-40,000; h10am-9pm) Next to where the ferry
docks from Seongmo-do is this seafood restaurant where you can sit and gaze at the ocean.
The set-course menus (from W65,000) arent
cheap but come with a feast of side dishes.
