VIT University ranks No. 8 in "India Today 2010" national
ranking among the engineering institutions in India. It was
established by the well-known educationalist, former
parliamentarian Dr. G. Viswanathan, Founder and
Chancellor, a visionary who was successful in making it a
centre of excellence in higher technical education. His
service for education is further extended to VIT University
Chennai Campus (VIT - CC) located at the Vandalur-
Kelambakkam Road.
Mr. G. V. Selvam, Vice-President, spearheading the Chennai
Campus, has a mission of making this a global centre with
ultramodern learning facilities of international standards.
Active-based learning is imparted by empowered faculty
members in the state-of-the-art classrooms. The University
encourages the faculty to enrich their knowledge through
research and consultancy. The Fully Flexible Credit System
(FFCS) provides the student with the flexibility not only to
choose the subjects and the faculty, but also to set their pace
of learning. Apart from academics, students are engaged in
several research programmes starting from the first year
itself
The School of Electronics Engineering (SENSE), at VIT
University Chennai Campus, is established for imparting the
state-of-the-art education, training and research in the field
of Electronics and Communication and allied areas. The
School offers an undergraduate level programme in
Electronics and Communication and postgraduate level
programme in VLSI.
ABOUT SENSE
Objective of the Programme
Optical signal processing (OSP) offers numerous
advantages in real time image processing applications. OSP
inherently offers parallelism in the processing of data at
speeds much higher than those achievable using electrical,

digital signal processing (DSP). The processing speed is
only limited by the speed of the sources (typically a coherent
laser source) and by the speed of the photo detection array.

OSP offers two dimensional real time processing of images.
Several studies have been devoted to theoretically
characterizing and practically implementing image
processing in the optical domain. The OSP techniques can
Fourier transform m input image spatially. As such optical
filtering and optical implementations are desirable. For
example a 64 x 64 FFT can take up to 1 ms on a modern DSP
chip, optically this can be processed in less than 1 ns. On the
practical side, integrated optics offers compact
implementations of complex OSP.OSP techniques can
provide a solution to many of the practical problems
encountered especially when the emphasis is on the
processing speed rather than the realisation of the
complexity. This seminar aims to discuss the OSP
techniques available for image processing and the practical
realization methodologies in OSP.
This seminar aims to understand, how the optical
image processing is different from digital image processing?
What are the different methods in Optical Image
Processing? What are the practical challenges in optical
image processing? These are some of the questions which
will be answered through this seminar and it also aims to
open up research area in this field
