REFLECTION

For the TSL 3108, Teaching of Grammar in the Primary Classroom subject students
were asked to implement a lesson plan in the classroom that has been created in part 1 of task
two. The lesson plan was created based on the curriculum specifications. It was a group work,
where I worked with my classmates named ..
We created the lesson plan based on the Year 3 curriculum specification and I realized
curriculum specification really plays an important lesson in designing the lesson plan. Besides,
we also required to carry out a ten minute simulated teaching using one of the activities
prepared in part 1. Since we work in a group of three, we were required to divide the activities
and I decided to take over the production stage.
The time allocated for the production stage was twenty minutes. In these twenty
minutes, as a teacher, I have to conduct activities which can give input for students on the topic.
During the production stage, I have to distribute worksheets to students and explain it to them. I
divided them in group of four, and ask the students to write sentences based on the given
pictures and words. After that, each student present their sentence they have wrote in the
worksheet in front of the class. Finally, Students retell the story using simple past tense
correctly. During presenting this stage, I was very nervous and I was afraid I might forget the
objectives of the lesson. At last, I managed to do it properly.
While implementing the lesson plan in the classroom, I have realized some strengths
and weaknesses of it. The strength of the lesson plan that I conducted was, where the activities
involved all the students. Teacher asks questions which can really involve all the students.
Every student was able to write simple sentence using simple past tense verbs and also
understand the content. The weakness of the lesson was some of the students could not speak
fluently while reading the worksheets.
Moreover, through this stimulated teaching, I also realized how to choose the suitable
grammar approach to apply in the classroom. There are several approaches that can be applied
in grammar classroom but not all the approaches are suitable to be applied. Some of the
approaches need to be modified in order to make sure it suits different level students and meet
the goal of the lesson. Other than the approaches, there are some grammar issues that we
have to pay attention every time. For an example, students will always face problems in fluency
and accuracy. So, as a teacher we have to make sure that we have balanced the fluency and
accuracy. It is very important to overcome all the grammar issues that always being highlighted.
Besides, I really felt that the activity that we have created for this particular age group
was very suitable. In the production stage, students were asked to write simple sentence based
on given pictures and words. The main purpose of this activity was to activate their background
knowledge. In order to enrich the knowledge that students already have, the teacher ask them
to read the sentence they have made.
The experience of moving away from the students desk to the teachers desk has given
me unforgettable experience. The few minutes life journey as a teacher has taught me so many
lesson that I cannot forget in my life. A single teacher faces many kids in classroom where they
bring many problems. A teachers job is, out of all the problems, a teacher should be able to
achieve the objective of lesson plan of the day.
In a nutshell, I have learnt many things from this course work. It has taught me many
lessons which can really guide me in my future career. I hope I can make use of the experience
that I had in the future.
