Introduction
Wireless communication has been developed these years. And, many
digital communication products have been brought into our life, and many
wireless communication services are integrated into a communication product. A
desired antenna for modern wireless communications is needed to cover many
bands, such as DVB band (530 ~ 860MHz) [1-3], GSM band (890 ~ 960MHz), DCS
band (1710 ~ 1880MHz) [4-5], PCS band (1850 ~ 1990MHz), UMTS band (1920 ~
2170MHz) and WLAN band (2400 ~ 2484MHz), and it is also called wideband antenna
[6-7]. Especially, planar antennas have been developed very fast, because of its
advantages such as omni-directional radiation patterns, low cost, light weight, easy to
fabricate and small size. In this paper, we design a wideband printed monopole antenna
for the application of DVB and GSM/PCS/DCS/UMTS and WLAN systems.
Antenna Configuration and Experimental Results
The configuration of the proposed antenna is shown in Fig.1, which has a
compact dimension of 200 x 40 mm
2
(H
sub
x W
sub
). The construct FR4 substrate
with a relative dielectric constant (
r
) of 4.4 and a thickness of 1.6mm (H) is
presented. The DTV antenna uses a 50-Ohm microstrip-fed line of the width (W
f
)
is 3mm and the length (H
f
) is 30mm, connected to the 50-Ohm standard miniature
adapter (SMA). And a narrow strip line of 35mm x 1.5mm (H
m
x W
m
) is
connected to the top of 50-Ohm microstrip-line, and it is an important parameter
in determining the impedance matching. And two right triangles of H
2
= 15mm
and W
2
= 12mm on the bottom of rectangle patch (H
R
x W
sub
) is truncated, and
two right triangles of H
1
= 70mm and W
1
= 20mm on the top of this proposed
antenna are both truncated. And the reverse side is the ground plane, which has a
compact dimension of 55.5 x 40mm
2
(H
G
x W
sub
). The distance between radiation
patch and top edge of the ground plane is the feed gap distance G = 9.5mm is also
an important parameter in determining the impedance matching. And the lower-
end frequency is approximately determined by the length (H
R
+H
G
) of the
proposed antenna.
Fig. 2 shows the measured and simulated return losses for the proposed
antenna. The measured result is taken by a vector network analyzer, and the
simulated results are obtained by using the Ansoft HFSS (High Frequency
Structure Simulator). The measured bandwidth ranges from 530 to 3000MHz
and the bandwidth is about 139.9% (RL > 7.5dB). It covers the DVB, GSM, DCS,
978-1-4244-3647-7/09/$25.00 2009 IEEE
PCS, UMTS, and WLAN bands. Fig. 3(a), (b) and (c) show the far-field radiation
patterns were measured at 530MHz, 700MHz and 860MHz in both X-Z plane and
Y-Z plane, respectively. Acceptable radiation patterns of the proposed antenna are
also observed. It is also seen that in the Y-Z plane, omni-directional or near omni-
directional radiation patterns are also obtained.
Conclusion
A novel wideband printed monopole antenna has been proposed,
fabricated and tested for wideband signal reception in the 530MHz ~ 3GHz. And
the proposed antenna can be applied to receive the signal on DVB band, as well as
GSM/DCS/PCS/UMTS and WLAN bands. The proposed antenna has an
advantage of simple configuration, low profile, easy to fabricate and low cost,
therefore it will be an attractive candidate for many wideband applications.
