The righteous thing has to be done. But punya shouldnt be expected by doing it. Conscience should get
purified. Therell be a few things, the evil shadows of which shouldnt fall on us. Such things shouldnt be
approached in life. Its very easy to do something which you are asked to do. Its very difficult not doing
something which you are asked not to do. Human weakness lies in doing what is forbidden. Refraining
from the forbidden is called Killing of Simhika(Lord Hanuman kills a demon named Simhika which
obstructs his journey to Lanka). There lies the enlightenment of human being. Dharma establishes
where an individual questions his own actions with respect to the cycle of Dharma. He attains eternal
reputation, who holds himself back from the deeds which dont fit into the cycle of Dharma and who
doesnt allow the evil shadows of such deeds to cast on him. He travels in the divine path. The one, who
can kill the deed which is against Dharma, is the one who attained the traits of a true zealot. Hence,
Dhruti, Drusti, Mati, Daakshyam, Sukarma naseedati this is the judgment of the first sarga of
Sundarakanda. If there one in whom the aforementioned four traits prevail, his deeds never perish.
Dhruti means determination- I am going to do it. Determination shouldnt turn out to be obsession. It
should be the faith that makes you perform deeds with devotion for God, as an instrument in his hands.
It shouldnt be arrogance in the disguise of self respect.
Drusti means skill. Doing something in a way it has to be done is skill. How long will you still linger at the
stage of performing a deed just for the sake of doing it? The day on which you start performing deeds
learning why they need to be performed, and what you attain by performing them, you will climb the
rungs of the ladder called Karma. When you dont have that skill, whatever you perform is for Punya. I
have to attain enormous amounts of punya and become the President of India by listening to
Sundarakanda - punya, punya, punya What will you do with that? You have to take rebirths to spend
it. God is really witty. If you do endless punya, he gives you rebirth to spend it and makes you an
emperor. Youll have to go through human life again. Doing great deeds is not skill; using those deeds to
purify your conscience is skill. Possessing such skill is Drusti. If you attain reputation by doing an action,
bearing the cause of the reputation in mind is Drusti.
Daakshyam means abstaining from the deed, by performing which, you dont fit in the cycle of Dharma
and you find it impossible to grow in life again. One who falls from the bottom rung of ladder doesnt
get wounded. One who falls from the topmost rung breaks his spine. Attributing all the good deeds done
to God, without arrogance is superior to the efforts put forth to grow in life and to attain reputation.
Except for humility, there is no other way to become eligible, to live as a flower on the feet of Lord. That
is why the teacher and the student are called as Vineeta and Vineya in Sanatana Dharma. That
humility comes from the whiplashes called preaches of the Guru. Humility comes from the speech of
Guru. Only by that speech, one doesnt approach the forbidden deeds. The sacred Ramayana explains
the repercussions of performing the forbidden deeds.
