St Chariton the Confessor suffered at Iconium during one of the
persecutions against Christians under Emperor Aurelian.
The Grace-Bearing Example of the Holy Protomartyr, St Thekla,
encouraged him in his confessors deed - being a native of his city
and whose memory he in particular deeply venerated.
St Chariton bravely denounced the pagan gods and staunchly
confessed Faith in the One True God our Lord Jesus Christ the
Saviour.
The Holy Confessor underwent fierce tortures but, through the Providence
of God, he remained alive.
When the persecution abated, St Chariton was set free from prison and
he dedicated the rest of his life to the Service of our Lord.
While journeying to Jerusalem on a Holy Pilgrimage, he fell victim to
robbers, who tied him up and threw him into a cave, with the
intention of killing him later.
St Chariton prayed fervently in the expectation of his impending death.
Having thanked God for His Great Mercy, the Holy Martyr entreated Him
to do with him according to His Divine Will.
At this time a snake slithered into the cave and began to drink wine from
a large vessel, which it poisoned with its deadly venom.
Later, when they returned to the cave, the robbers gulped down the
poisoned wine and perished.
St Chariton had been spared from an untimely death, and he once
again expressed his deepest gratitude to God.
He began his Ascetic Struggles at the place of his miraculous
Deliverance, by first distributing all the plundered treasures of the
robbers amongst the poor and the destitute.
Then he set about building a church inside the robbers cave.
As time passed, a Monastery was established there - the renowned
Pharan Lavra in Palestine.
St Chariton compiled a Strict Rule for his fellow Monks but yearning for
solitude, he went further into the desert.
However, once again, many sought his Spiritual Guidance, and because
he could reject none who sought Divine Truth, two more Monasteries
were established - the Jericho Monastery and the Souka Monastery,
which was referred to as the Old Lavra.
At the end of his Life, St Chariton Struggled in a cave on a hill near the
Souka Monastery, while continuing to provide Spiritual Guidance for
all three of the Monasteries that he had founded.
According to Holy Tradition, St Chariton compiled the Office of Taking
Monastic Vows.
St Chariton the Confessor died in extreme old age and was buried
according to his instruction - at the Pharan Monastery in the church
that he had built on the site of the robbers cave.
May St Chariton the Confessor and Abbot of Palestines memory be
Eternal and may he constantly Intercede with God for the Salvation of
our soul.

Sacred Hymns to praise Thy
Memorial faithfully.
Precious in the Sight of the Lord is the
Death of His Holy One.
Chariton, Thou carried in Thyself the
Heavenly Grace, and thus Thou
disdained everything mundane.
Therefore, as one bodiless, Thou
accepted hardships, electing to live
as one who will Piously reside
around the Stream of Eternal
Delight. By tears, Thou dried the
muddy well of passions, O God-
Inspired Saint, and Thou watered
thereby the stalks that sustain Life,
O Holy One.
Blessed in the man who Fears the
Lord; He will delight exceedingly in
His Commandments.
Chariton, Thou worthily receive the
Grace to administer Cures and
Healings from Grace Divine.
Thereafter, Thou put to flight
demonic deception of evil spirits.
And also injury and harm of grave
diseases withdrew and disappeared.
From Thee gush forth the Rivers of
Thy Gifts of Grace in abundant
Streams. And as we are Refreshed
by them, we extol Thy Memorial.

How wise art Thy Judgements, O Christ!
In that Thou granted Peter
Understanding of Thy Resurrection
by the Tomb Wrappings alone;
whereas Luke and Cleopas Thou
accompanied, conversing; and as
Thou did so Thou did not reveal
Thyself to them, and Thou was
taunted by them as though Thou
alone were a Stranger in Jerusalem,
not knowing what had happened
therein of late. But since Thou
Ordains all things in conformity with
Thy Creation, Thou explained to
them what the Prophets had uttered
concerning Thee, and in the breaking
of the bread they knew Thee after
their hearts were inflamed by Thy
Knowledge; and when they came
together with the Disciples they
proclaimed openly the Resurrection,

O D E 4
Perceiving the Unsearchable Purpose of
God concerning Thine Incarnation
from a Virgin, O Most High, the
Prophet Habakkuk cried: Glory to
Thy Power, O Lord!
O D E 5
The whole world was amazed at Thy
Divine Glory: for Thou, O Virgin,
Who has not known wedlock, has
been Translated from earth to the
Eternal Mansions to the Life without
end, bestowing Salvation upon all
who sing Thy praises.
O D E 6
As we celebrate this Sacred and
Solemn Feast of the Theotokos, let
us come, clapping our hands, O
people of the Lord, and Glorifying
God Who was Born of her.
O D E 7
The Holy Children bravely trampled
upon the threatening fire, preferring
not to worship created things rather
than the Creator, and they sang in
Joy: Blessed art Thou and praised
above all: O Lord God of our
Fathers!
O D E 8
We Praise, we Bless and we Worship
the Lord!
The Offspring of the Theotokos saved
the Holy Children in the furnace.
He Who was then prefigured has
since been born on earth, and He
gathers together all Creation to sing:
O ye Works of the Lord: Bless ye the
Lord and exalt Him above all
forever!

Now behold, two of them were
travelling that same day to a village
called Emmaus, which was seven
miles from Jerusalem.
And they discussed together all these
things that had happened.
So it was, while they conversed and
reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew
near and went with them.
But their eyes were restrained, so that
they did not recognise Him.
And He said to them: What kind of
conversation is this that you have
with one another as you walk and
are sad?
Then the one whose name was Cleopas
answered and said to Him: Art
Thou the only Stranger in Jerusalem,
and does Thou not know the things
that have happened there in these
days?
And He said to them: What things?
So they said to Him: The things
concerning Jesus of Nazareth, Who
was a Prophet Mighty in Deed and
Word before God and all the people;
and how the Chief Priests and our
Rulers delivered Him to be
condemned to death, and crucified
Him.
But we were hoping that it was He Who
was going to Redeem Israel.
Indeed, besides all this, today is the
third day since these things
happened.
Yes, and certain Women of our
company, who arrived at the Tomb
early, astonished us.
For they told us that when they did not
find His Body, they beheld a Vision of
Angels who said He was alive!
And certain of those who were with us
went to the Tomb and found it just as
the women had said; but Him they
did not see.
Then He said to them, O foolish ones,
and slow of heart to believe in all
that the Prophets have spoken!

Ought not the Christ to have
suffered these things and to enter
into His Glory?
And beginning with Moses and all the
Prophets, He expounded to them in
all the Scriptures the Things
concerning Himself.
Then they drew near to the village
where they were going, and He
indicated that He would have gone
further. But they constrained Him,
saying: Abide with us, for it is
toward evening, and the day is far
spent.
And He went in to stay with them.
Now it came to pass, as He sat at the
table with them, that He took bread,
Blessed it and broke it, and gave it to
them.
Then their eyes were opened and they
recognised Him.
And He vanished from their sight.
And they said to one another: Did not
our hearts burn within us while He
spoke with us on the road, and while
He opened the Scriptures to us?
And they arose that very hour and
returned to Jerusalem, and found
the Eleven and those who were with
them gathered together, saying: The
Lord is Risen indeed, and has
appeared to Simon!
And they related all the things that had
happened along the road, and how
He was known to them by the
breaking of bread.
