Lace the kids shoes and grease the chains on their bikes

because International Walk (and Bike) to School Day

is Wednesday, October 8! Activate Bufalo County will
be promoting the day and hopes to see a larger turnout
than they did in May,
where 80% of students
at participating schools
walked or biked to school.
Events like
these are great at
building awareness,
said Safe Routes to
School Coordinator Kate
Hannon. We want to
create something thats
more than just a day,
though. Tese kids enjoy
walking to school, and
through our surveys
weve seen that they
want to walk to school.
Were hoping to use the
momentum of this day to
help grow our eforts.
Activate Bufalo
County, through Safe
Routes to School, is
working to get students
walking to school each
week. Teyve helped
implement the Walking Wednesdays program at
Northeast Elementary, as well as a daily walking program
at Park Elementary.
In a recent parent survey conducted at fve Bufalo
County schools, the coalition found that 59% of students
lived within half a mile of school, while over 75% of
students were driven to school each day. In addition, nearly
85% of students who lived within that half mile had asked
their parents about walking or biking to school. Parents
listed traf c, safety, and
weather as the major
barriers preventing them
from allowing their child
to walk or bike to school.
Safe Routes to
School is working with
parents, principals, school
staf, law enforcement,
and city of cials to work
towards creative solutions
to improve safety and
increase the number of
students who walk and
bike to school.
Trough
enforcement, education,
and participation, we are
working towards a safer
community, Hannon
said. Te City of Kearney
has been a great partner
and encourages parents,
teachers, and community
members to utilize Access
Kearney to share city
improvements and other comments.

After collecting a whopping 400 lbs of unwanted, unused, and
expired medications at the April Prescription Take-Back, the Bufalo
County Sherrifs Of ce is set to have a record-breaking year of
prescription collections. Te next Take-Back event is scheduled for
Saturday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Good Samaritan
Hospital in the north parking lot.
Volunteers from Positive Pressure, Good Samaritan Hospital,
Kearney/Holdredge Elks Lodge #984, and Two Rivers Public Health
Department will be assisting the Sherrifs Of ce in collecting
medications dropped of by community members. Drop-ofs are free
and anonymous, and a great way to safely rid your medicine cabinets
of old and unwanted medication.
According to a study from Monitoring
the Future, prescription medications are the
second-most abused drug in America. In
addition, 70% of prescription abusers got them
from a friend or relative, while only 5% got them
from a drug dealer or over the internet. Tese
numbers show why it is so important to rid
your medicine cabinets of expired or unwanted
prescriptions.
Join us September 27 and safely dispose
of your old medicine. For more information,
including a map and directions to the event, visit
