DESCRIPTION

HIGHFLEX FUEL RESISTANT SEALANT is a joint sealant based on liquid polysulphide polymer, which when
mixed cures to form a tough rubber like seal with excellent adhesion to primed concrete, glass, masonry,
aluminium and stainless steel substrates. It is capable of withstanding repeated extension, compression
and cyclic movements without loss of adhesion and resists deterioration by sunlight, weathering, ozone,
water, salt, oil and fuels. HIGHFLEX FUEL RESISTANT SEALANT is a pouring grade sealant used for the
sealing of horizontal joints.

USES
HIGHFLEZ FUEL RESISTANT SEALANT is a two part, zero VOC, flame resistant, self levelling, jet fuel
resistant polysulphide sealant which cures to a flexible tear-resistant rubber. It is highly resilient and has
excellent recovery characteristics after extended periods of compression or expansion. It is used for
sealing joints on airfield runways, aprons and other areas that may be subject to fuel spillage and jet
blast.

ADVANTAGES
Excellent adhesion to concrete.
Designed to form a tough rubber like seal.
Resistant to jet fuels, lubricating oils and Hydrocarbon.
Capable of accommodating continuous and pronounced cyclic movement (+/- 25% MAF).
Jet blast resistant.

APPLICATION
Joint Preparation
The joint surfaces must be thoroughly dry, clean and dust free. All dust and laitance must be removed by
grinding, wire brushing or grit blasting. All metal surfaces must be free of all rust, scale and protective
lacquers. Use a suitable solvent to remove any traces of grease or oil.

TECHNICAL DATA SHEET
HIGHFLEX FUEL RESISTANT SEALANT
Elastomeric, Two-Component, Self Levelling, Fuel Resistant Joint Sealant

APPLICATIONS
Ensure that the expansion joint filler is tightly packed and devoid of any spaces or gaps at the base of the
sealing slot, prior to positioning of the bond breaker tape. The use of a bond breaker tape is not required
in expansion joints containing polyethylene foam joint fillers. For construction or contraction joints using
fibre board polyethylene bond breaker tape must be used.
To ensure a clean finish, use masking tape along the face surfaces edges of the joint prior to priming.
Ensure the tapes are removed immediately on completion of sealing works.

PRIMING
HIGHFLEX POLYSULPHIDE PRIMER is a single component chemically active liquid primer, recommended
for all porous substrates namely concrete, stone, brickwork, timber etc. Apply a uniform coat of
HIGHFLEX PSP to the bonding surfaces of the joint ensuring a uniform application. Avoid ponding at the
base of the joint. Whenever excess porosity is encountered an additional coat is recommended. Allow
the primer to become touch dry, before proceeding with the application of HIGHFLEX FUEL RESISTANT
SEALANT. Any primed areas not sealed within 8 hours of primer application, should be re-primed one
hour prior to the sealant application.
HIGHFLEX PSNP FOR NON-POROUS SURFACES
HIGHFLEX PSNP is recommended as a primer for non-porous substrates such as glass, ceramics and
aluminium. It is a one component chemically active clear liquid which can be applied by brush in a thin
coat and allowed to dry for 5 mins. prior to the application of the sealant.
Note on primer application
Avoid excess priming to eliminate chances of primer ponding at the base of the joint.
Apply HIGHFLEX FUEL RESISTANT SEALANT only when the primed surface is tack free, which is
after the solvent has evaporated but prior to the primer film having reacted completely.

MIXING
HIGHFLEX FUEL RESISTANT SEALANT is a pouring grade sealant supplied in two separate containers, base
compound and curing agent. The small unit containing the curing agent must be added to the larger unit
containing the base compound. Ensure that the curing agent is added to the base compound in its
entirety. Mix the contents thoroughly using a slow speed drill (300-500 rpm) fitted with a mixing paddle
for 6 minutes ensuring the compound is mixed thoroughly, paying particular attention to bottom and
sides of the can. This will ensure full cure of the compound.
The paddle blade must be kept below the sealants surface to avoid introducing air into the sealant and
following the mixing operation the sealant may be poured directly into horizontal joints.

DESIGN CRITERIA
HIGHFLEX FUEL RESISTANT SEALANT is an elastomeric sealant and may be applied to joints between 5
and 50mm wide. Joints which are expected to experience cyclic movements should be designed to an
optimum width: depth ratio of 2:1, subject to the overriding recommended minimum sealant depths set
out below.
5mm for metals, glass and other non-porous surfaces.
10mm for all porous surfaces.
20mm for trafficked joints and those subject to hydrostatic pressures.
To ensure that the sealant remains within its stated movement capacity (25% MAF); sealing slot widths
should be designed in accordance with the recommendations of BS 6093.
The use of a primer is always required on porous surfaces.
On non-porous surfaces a primer is not normally required except where glass or glazed surfaces are to be
permanently immersed in water.

LIMITATION
HIGHFLEX FUEL RESISTANT SEALANT should not be used in direct contact with materials containing pitch
or bitumen.
Note: Refer to Highland Technical Services when joints are expected to be exposed to high levels of
chlorine or swimming pool application.

STORAGE
Shelf life of 12 months in original unopened containers.
Store in dry conditions at temperatures not exceeding 25
o
C.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Harmful if swallowed.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Wear suitable protective gloves and eye/face protection. In case of contact with skin, wash immediately
with soap and water. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of clean water and seek
medical advice. Hands should be thoroughly washed before eating or smoking. Cured sealant should not
be burned due to generation of potential toxic fumes.
Empty containers should be disposed of in accordance with waste disposal regulations.
