Some children dread the day for weeks.
Others, such as Candice Juarez, have a different take
on the beginning of the school year.
Its the first day of school, the third-grade student
said. Im excited about going to the third grade and
learning lots of things I don t know about yet. How can
learning about things be bad?
Her guardian, Cecil Schmidt, is happy with the
enthusiasm.
She genuinely likes it, he said. When I was a kid, I
dont remember getting this excited about it, but Im
happy that she is. School is different now, she tells me.
Its fun.
The fun feelings might be shared by many students,
but for teachers, administrators and support staff at
each of the citys many schools, the start of the school

Every year brings change of some kind at
Lakeview Public Schools.
Sometimes its new personnel, new pro-
grams, new facilities, new ideas.
The beginning of the 2014-15 school year is
no exception.
Lakeview has added a slew of staff members,
opened an early childhood center, and forged a
partnership with Baker College, among other
things each of these things are ready to go
now that the 2014-15 school year is underway.
Nearly two years ago, the district moved its
administrative offices to the former Wheat
Elementary, purchasing the school back from a
private owner in order to make this happen.
In April 2013, this old building began to be-
rate new life.
The board of education offices set up shop
there, allowing new classrooms to open up at
Princeton Elementary.
The Wheat Educational Campus allowed
high school students to begin having dual en-
rollment in college classes.
Now, with the start of the new year, the
Wheat Early Childhood Center is open.
This childhood center consists of six pre-
school classrooms, and, as a result of the open-
ing, allows more elementary school class-
rooms to open up at Greenwood Elementary.
A new collaboration with Baker College
means high school students can dual enroll at
Baker College.
Now, Lakeview students can take computer
science and health/medical technology courses
through Baker College at the Wheat
Educational Campus, during the normal
school day.
New principals Justin Cabe (Princeton
Elementary) and Christopher Hahn (Ardmore
Elementary), along with director Katy
Neumann, highlight the additions made by the
district in terms of teaching and administrative
staff, and are a part of a dozen new faces that
can be seen in many of the districts buildings
beginning this year.
These three very talented educators have
strengthened Lakeviews team, superinten-
dent Karl Paulson said or Cabe, Hahn and
Neumann. We look forward to great things
from them.

Kendall McMurtry has a
passion.
I love fast cars,
McMurtry said. Fast old
cars are even better.
McMurtry and nearly
80,000 others had a
chance to fuel their pas-
sion at last weeks Harper
Charity Cruise.
The event brought to-
gether hundreds of hot
rods, vintage and custom
cars as well as a few bicy-
cles, motorcycles and oth-
er unique rides, with ma-
ny of these vehicles cruis-
ing Harper Avenue be-
tween Old 8 Mile and
Bayside.
I really enjoy this
cruise, veteran cruiser
Dominic Martin said. I do
a lot of them and this one
if my favorite.
The sentiment was
echoed by many cruisers
and spectators.
Its up-close-and-per-
sonal, Suzanne Moceri
said. My husband and I
have come here for a
number of years and ev-
ery year we talk to a lot of
people about the car.
Theyre very interested
and they share that with
us. Its really very nice.
You dont get that at most
cruises.
The hands-on feel to the
event is evident in the
large number of cars
parked along the route,
many with their hoods up
and doors open.
I really dont pay much
attention to the cars on the
road, Frank Czarnicki
said. Im too busy looking
at all the cars parked
along Harper.

SCHOOL
year means getting back to business and back to work.
Its always an exciting and crazy day, Lake Shores
Rodgers Elementary School Principal Cindy Sam said.
But its good to be back.
Sam visited each classroom Tuesday morning per-
sonally welcoming the students back to school.
Shayla McBrien is starting kindergarten at Rodgers
and her father, Michael, said its an exciting day for the
family.
Im excited for her, he said. But Im a little nervous,
too. Shes growing up too fast.
Throughout the city, students are beginning a routine
that will last until June.
Lake Shore superintendent Chris Loria sees the start
of the school year as the beginning of a era for the dis-
trict, one that highlights Lake Shores emphasis one
global community and technology.
Looking forward to another great year at Lake
Shore as we implement new technology and programs
throughout the district, he said. The most notable ad-
dition is the offering of foreign language classes for kin-
dergarten through 12th grade students. We are excited
to continue building successful futures for all - one stu-
dent at a time.
School started for students throughout the city Tuesday morning. Pictured are Rodgers Elementary School stu-
dents Astou Fall, George Ceuca and Hope Tisdall. The trio of fifth graders were already hard at work.
Its become a treasured
annual event in the city.
The St. Isaac Jogues
Summerfest kicks off at 3
p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, and
runs through Sunday,
Sept. 7, on the church
grounds, located on 10
Mile just west of Harper.
After the success of our
2013 festival, were very
excited about the new
things planned for this
years event, Alexandria
Franz said. Summerfest
is jam-packed with fun for
kids of all ages.
Included in the fun are
carnival rides, a game tent,
a beer garden, a tail-gate
style menu will be served,
including hot digs, burg-
ers and hand-dipped fried
pickles, as well as food
from Detroit Style Pizza
and Copper Penny, Franz
said.
The festival also in-
cludes late-night snacks,
which arent served until
after 9 p.m. Friday and
Saturday.
Hot wings, chili fries,
beer-battered mush-
rooms, she said. If it goes
good with beer itll be
served there.
The festival is also home
to several Las Vegas
games, which will be set
up inside the St. Isaac
Jogues gymnasium from 6
p.m. to midnight, Sept.
5-6, and 4 to 8 p.m. on
Sunday, Sept. 7.
Franz said a poker tour-
nament is slated to begin
at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Before the Las Vegas
games are set up, however,
bingo takes over the gym.
The first bingo ball will
be drawn at 3 p.m. Friday,
Sept. 5, noon. Saturday,
Sept. 6, and 1 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 7, Franz
said.
Raffles and other games
are also slated to be part of
the annual event.
Youre not going to
want to miss the mush-
ball tournament either,
she explained. Its held
all day Saturday at the fa-
cilitys baseball and soft-
ball diamonds.
The festival also fea-
tures an '80s themed night
Sept. 6, Franz said.
Parking is available at
the Shores Church across
10 Mile and shuttles will
be available.

Weve got a great turn-
out, Biafora said. And
the T-shirt sales are going
well. People are having a
great time and were rais-
ing money for these chari-
ties at the same time.
Thats what its all about.
Gary Poplowski was
standing in front of Hurst
Appliance at the corner of
Trombley and Harper and
said the view was spectac-
ular.
The weather is great,
the 59-year old retired
Ford Motor Company
worker said. And I think
everybody has taken their
car out tonight. Ive seen
just about everything.
Theres even a guy with a
1950s step van thats re-
stored. I love that.
Cruises such as the
Harper Charity Cruise
are, for many, the culmi-
nation of years or hard
work, and thousands of
dollars in restoration and
customization.
Some people have a
condo in Florida, Steven
Moceri said with a chuck-
le. I have a 53 Ford. Its
worth it though. I
wouldnt have it any other
way. Instead of spending
the winters sitting in a
condo in Florida, my wife
and I spend the summers
sitting in the Ford in
Michigan.
For Cary Huberson, 26,
the Harper Charity
Cruise was his first
cruise with his 1964
Chevy Impala.
I just bought this car
from my uncle, he said.
I was sitting in his ga-
rage for 15 years, and fi-
nally I asked him if I
could buy it.
Hubersons uncle
agreed to the sale, but
only if he restored the
car.
I got it tuned up and
running and now Im
here, Huberson said. I
came here because one
of the guys said to come
and get peoples ideas
and thoughts on what I
should do to restore it.
Huberson said he had
already gotten plenty of
ideas and even a few
phone numbers, e-mails
and business cards from
fellow cruisers.
Ill be back next year,
Huberson said. And this
baby is going to be a real
beauty by then.
Although the cruise
didnt officially get roll-
ing until 5 p.m, by 4 p.m.
last Wednesday after-
noon, the roar of hot rod
engines filled the air, and
dozens of cars had al-
ready set up along the
route.
This cruise is really
about getting to talk to
the people, Czarnicki
said. And that makes it
very unique and very ap-
pealing to a lot of people.
You dont see that on
Woodward or Gratiot.
The roadways are just to
big and not conducive to
that. Here, on Harper, its
perfect. I wouldnt
change a thing about this
cruise. Oh, well, maybe
one thingId have it
twice a year.

CITY CALENDAR
MY VI EW By Diane Morelli
OPINION
L
ast Thursday
afternoon,
with the water
hose nozzle
set to its best
jet-spray position, I pow-
er sprayed the side of my
house that has an over-
hanging roof above the
designated play area
where my grandchildren
play.
My grandchildren are to
arrive the next night from
the Chicago area.
This was the only last-
minute time Id be able to
clean that area spiders
and bugs quickly call it
home again.
I first noticed it while
power spraying back-and-
forth sideways under the
roof a bat wing rose up
and outward. I was spray-
ing a bat! I immediately
crouched down a bit and
yelled, Stay there!
I showed my son and
husband the bat clinging
to the rafters. Later we
saw it was the first bat of
the night in flight above
the neighborhood just
after sunset.
There seems to be more
spider webs set up all
around my yard this year
than in past years. And
their large webs are being
set up overnight. I even
see the spiders, whose
web Ive destroyed, im-
mediately begin to spin a
new web close by.
Was it because of the
rainy season?
Is this one reason why I
feel this summer has been
a long one? Unusual way
to feel, I know.
Knowing an area of my
yard was just cleared of
webs, I still frequently
walk into them I feel it
on my face, in my hair and
on my neck ewwww.
Similar spider webs
have been spotted outside
the Grosse Pointe News
offices, too. They were
two huge, beautifully
spun works of art, except
for the spider which
seemed to be guarding
the web in the middle, like
an alert goalie.
Those webs are strong,
too. The power spray has
to be right on it, and stay
on it, until it breaks apart.
Upon writing this, I
know come Saturday
morning, my grandchil-
dren will say, But grand-
ma, theres a big spider
next to the blackboard!
And again, Ill end up say-
ing, Its gone now. See,
its now over there crawl-
ing on the grass next to
the pool.
Ewwww.
I dont think Im going
to mention the bat, but I
wont be surprised if their
grandpa, Pappy, and
Uncle Anthony do.
Come to thinking about
it, maybe the summer has
seemed long to me due to
its shock value.
Such as in July, when
my 3-year-old grandson,
Michael, asked his uncle,
Erik, to pick him up and
put him in the pool to
swim with me.
As I turned to the side,
asking my daughter
What was the name Erik
said he wanted to be
called? The minute she
replied, Uncle Danger,
and I heard, Yes, throw
me in, I saw my grand-
son up in the air, over my
head and splash in front
of me into the pool.
That was a shocker.
I had to wait a second to
see how hed handle com-
ing up out of the water by
himself. I pulled him up.
I laughed while Michael
cried with a curious look
on his face as if thinking,
Why is grandma laugh-
ing? I told him Uncle
Eriks going to cry if you
dont stop crying. I ex-
plained to him, while still
laughing, Uncle Erik
misunderstood you.
Maybe when you are 4
years old, you can be
thrown in the pool.
All the while, Erik, look-
ing ever so slightly dis-
traught, explained, I mis-
understood. I throw my
other nephews in the lake
all the time.
Michael soon stopped
crying, and agreed
Maybe next year when
Im 4!
So, if youre feeling sum-
mer has flown by, do
something fun with a lot of
friends and family around.
Something exciting is
bound to happen.
As for me, Im going to
be outdoors as much as
possible and relax by en-
joying sunsets and stars.
Then comes Indian
Summer
And who knew a week
later I would wake up at
6:30 a.m. and see that bat
had entered the house and
was swooping back and
forth above me in my bed-
room!
Spider webs in my face bats too

To the Editor:
To Mayor Kip Walby and
Council member Pete
Rubino:
You both campaigned
on transparency and
openness in government.
In the need to shake
things up as evidenced
by the STRAW debate
video from 2009, you now
have shown your intent to
hire as the next city man-
ager, an insider, and it
was done behind closed
doors, out of public view.
There was no public
discussion nor real
search prior to you ap-
proving a contract be pre-
pared.
This apparently is your
new standard operating
procedure to reach deci-
sions out of the public
view and move to ap-
prove with little to no ad-
vance notice and little to
no discussion.
You have betrayed your
own words and the resi-
dents who voted for you.
It is the easy way out. It is
disgraceful.
And to the rest of coun-
cil, be aware we are
watching what you do,
too.

SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2014
Lakeviews football
team put on an offensive
show in its season-open-
ing 49-28 win over host
and city rival South Lake
last week.
Senior quarterback
Caleb Stump looked like
the cool, calm leader. He
has a complete set of
weapons at his disposal,
senior Brian Moy, run-
ning back; junior Bobby
Hedges, slot back; junior
Brendan Martinez, half-
back; junior Jordan
Wyckoff, wide receiver;
senior Rob Diefenderfer,
wide receiver; junior
Jarrett Caruso, wide re-
ceiver; sophomore Chris
Wise, running back; and
senior Tim Katsiroubas,
running back.
The Huskies played
with an undaunted cour-
age against the favored
Cavaliers and its Division
1 recruit, junior Martell
Pettaway.
For fourth-year head
coach Rob Wozniak, this
is a Brave New World
as his Huskies played like
a champion.
The key started a long
time ago when this group
worked hard in the
weight room and on the
practice field, Wozniak
said. Caleb was great to-
night and is doing of
great things as our leader.
This is his third year as
the starter and his confi-
dence level is high.
Stump helped the
Huskies score three
touchdowns in the fourth
quarter.
They were sorely
needed as the Cavaliers
fought back from a 29-6
deficit to make it 29-21 af-
ter Pettaway scored on a
3- and 8-yard run early in
the fourth quarter.
The Huskies answered
as Moy had a long kick-
off return, putting the ball
at the Cavs 44-yard line.

South Lake in

Cavs standout Martell Pettaway powers through a
slew of Huskies.

Lakeviews Caleb Stump tried to shed the tackle of South Lake's Anthony Morgan.
On the first play,
Hedges ran for 12 yards
and he caught a 15-yard
screen pass from Stump.
On the third play,
Stump threw a touch-
down pass to Caruso, giv-
ing the Huskies a 35-21
lead.
The Huskies defense
forced a turnover and
they used the momentum
to score another touch-
down.
Stump ran 17 yards for
the score with 3:04 left.
Junior Johan Belloli
kicked the extra point
and it was 42-21.
South Lake head coach
Nick Marrogy continued
to encourage his Cavs
and they responded with
another scoring drive.
This time, backup quar-
t er back, s eni or
Parashaun Cunegin, or-
chestrated a three-play,
41-yard drive.
Pettaway gained nine
yards and Cunegin ran
for 12 yards to put the ball
at the 20-yard line.
On the next play,
Cunegin threw a perfect
pass to junior Anthony
Morgan for a touchdown.
The extra point was good
and it was 42-28 with 2:34
left.
After recovering a
squib kick at their
49-yard line, the Huskies
took advantage of a
15-yard penalty to put the
ball at the Cavs 36-yard
line.
Moy ran for 12 yards
and Stump did the rest,
scoring on a 24-yard run
with 1:52 left to put the
game away.
Cunegin was intercept-
ed on the final drive and
time ran out as the
Huskies won a season
opener for the first time
under Wozniak.
It feels good to get this
win under our belt and
begin the season on a
positive note, Wozniak
said. Our offensive coor-
dinator, Matt Barranca,
put in a lot of time with
this offense and the guys
work hard on it in prac-
tice.
Stump ran 22 times for
105 yards with two touch-
downs and completed 10-
of-16 passes for 167 yards
and three touchdowns.

2B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2014
Football
continued from 1B
He hit six different re-
ceivers.
The Huskies took a 9-0
lead in the first
quarter when
Wise scored on a
short run and
Belloli kicked a
field goal.
In the second
quarter, the Cavs
cut the deficit to
9-6 when sopho-
more quarter-
back Datrell
Milling connect-
ed with junior
wide receiver
Darrell Heard
for a 29-yard
touchdown.
The Huskies
answered on the
ensuing possession when
Stump hit Moy with a
short pass over the mid-
dle and Moy outraced the
secondary to score on the
33-yard strike. The two-
point conversion was
missed, but it was 15-6.
In the third quarter, a
fumble recovery on the
kick-off gave the Huskies
possession on the Cavs
25-yard line.
Moy ran in from a yard
out and Belloli kicked the
PAT to give the visitors a
22-6 lead.
It was 29-6 after Stump
threw a 24-yard scoring
pass to Diefenderfer and
another Belloli PAT.
For the Cavaliers,
Pettaway had 23 carries
for 88 yards with two
touchdowns and three re-
ceptions for 18 yards.
Cunegin rushed for 77

0-1.
Next for the Huskies in
their Macomb Area
Conference Blue Division
opener at 7 p.m. Friday,
Sept. 5, at LAnse Creuse,
and next for the Cavaliers
is their MAC Silver
Division opener at 7 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 5, at home
against their other city ri-
val, Lake Shore.
The Shorians won their
opener, 31-26. Jalen Williams turns the corner.
Mayor Kip Walby rec-
ognized the achievement
of the Lac Saint Clair
Little League 10-and-un-
der girls fast pitch softball
team at its last meeting
with an official proclama-
tion regarding the squad.
The team, which is
comprised of 9-and
10-year-old girls, cap-
tured a state champion-
ship in August, when they
beat favored Beaverton,
9-2, in the title game.
The championship is
the first in the leagues
history, and the first time
any team from the Lac
Saint Clair league had ev-
er progressed past the
district round of he tour-
nament.
Were proud of this
team, Walby said. Were
proud of these girls.
Head coach Mike
Fremont Jr. and assistant
coaches Mike Fremont
Sr. and Anthony
Prasnjak, led the squad
who had a flair for the
dramatic during the tour-
nament.
Back-to-back no-hit-
ters, dramatic walk-off
home runs and narrow
victories to stay alive in
the tournament were all
part of the teams journey
to a state crown.
These girls put in a lot
of hard work, Fremont
Sr. said. And they de-
serve everything theyve
gotten. The coaching
staff and the parents real-
ly helped out.
Members of the team
include Kayla Austin,
Ally Prasnjak, Kara
Jones, Ariana Wlodeck,
Alena Hamilton, Olivia
Sieradzki, Hannah
Fremont, Carmen
Modesti no, Emma
Herbon, Morgan Kimm,
Lauren Mispelon and
Shianne Hagewood.
