Polycom Unlocks New Possibilities for

Cisco Customers
Opt for solutions that expand your choices,
not lock you in
Cisco customer challenge
Your business is migrating to unied communications (UC). You are adding video
collaboration to fully engage your customers, reduce travel and speed time-to-market.
Youve found that no single vendor has a solution for every UC needEmail, voice,
video, IM chat, social software, web conferencing, content delivery, CRM, business
process integration, cloud options, hosted services, or mobility, bring your own device
(BYOD). Your IT department can no longer aford the high cost of being locked into
proprietary islands of communications so they turn to the best vendors with open
standards based solutions to meet the challenges of multi-vendor interoperability.

In your solution search you have many questions. How do we connect our existing
Cisco CTS room with Microsoft

Lync

?

If we make a strategic UC architectural shift, do
we still have investment protection with our Cisco Unied Communications Manager
(CUCM) and Cisco video assets? Can we add conference rooms with automated
two camera speaker location technology with Polycom EagleEye Director and equip
more rooms serving more participants at a much lower cost? Can we reduce network
bandwidth and get better resource utilization with the Tandberg bridges we already
own? Can we make our solution work on any network, without having to go down a
proprietary, non-standard Cisco Medianet upgrade path?
The Polycom solution
In todays world of mixed UC environments, the only practical way to truly unify
communications and keep your future options open is to orchestrate the broadest
possible use of open standards and native interoperability to enable all the disparate
parts involved to work together seamlessly. The key to your interoperability is the
Polycom

RealPresence

Platform that acts as a central hub in your UC environment.

It works with business and communications applications from hundreds of vendors.
It supports enterprise, cloud and hybrid deployments. It supports mobility (BYOD)
with award winning innovation. It works on any vendor network. It makes video
collaboration universal. If you are a Cisco customer, it protects your investment and
improves resource utilization and performance. Polycom support for Telepresence
Interoperability Protocol (TIP) means that older Cisco Telepresence System (CTS)
rooms can collaborate with new Microsoft Lync clients in Virtual Meeting Rooms
(VMRs) from the Polycom RealPresence Platform. With CUCM validation and testing, a
Cisco customer now has the option to install innovative technology like the Polycom

HDX

with EagleEye Director or Polycom Immersive Telepresence solutions in

Cisco environments. The Polycom technology and native interoperability reduces
bandwidth consumed and eliminates the need for expensive gateways. The Polycom
RealPresence solution architecture reduces complexity and lowers your Total Cost of
Ownership (TCO).

Polycom Telepresence Interoperability Protocol
(TIP) support
In 2011, Polycom delivered another milestone in our commitment
to open interoperability by adding support for TIP, a proprietary
protocol developed by Cisco that is now available to any vendor
through the IMTC. TIP interoperability is an afordable licensed
option on selected Polycom

4500 solutions. If you have existing CTS (Cisco) rooms and wish
to expand video collaboration to additional conference rooms,
you now have an option to install a much lower cost Polycom
HDX with EagleEye Director a solution that utilizes innovative
two camera technology with automated active speaker location.
Need to add a UC whiteboard and Polycom

Touch Control to
increase collaboration efectiveness? No problem. The entire
solution costs far less than purchasing another Cisco CTS and
does not require the rigid room specications that the CTS
room needs. When you need a fully immersive communication
experience, the Polycom

RPX

, OTX

, TPX

and ATX

immersive
telepresence systems also support TIP interoperability, with an
available, no charge TIP software option .
Enterprises need to ensure they use open and interoperable
protocols between network building blocks to ensure that they
can achieve a high degree of functionality while preserving or
migrating their existing investments. By leveraging multivendor
networks rather than a single-vendor approach, enterprises can
improve network capabilities while signicantly reducing costs and
simplifying network complexity.

RealPresence

Platform
Multi-vendor interoperability
Polycom native TIP support on the Polycom RealPresence
Platform opens up numerous UC solutions options, including
integrating existing Cisco environments with Microsoft Lync. A
key solution component that makes this possible is the Polycom

RealPresence

Virtualization Manager (DMA), which contains

a SIP gatekeeper that allows for connecting to the CUCM in
the Cisco environment. The DMA orchestrates the ability for
nearly any endpoint or room system to connect into a Virtual
Meeting Room (VMR) served by the Polycom

RealPresence

Collaboration Server (RMX

). This makes multi-vendor

collaboration with Cisco and Microsoft Lync possible a more
afordable and exible solution from Polycom that is easier to
deploy and support than Ciscos complicated alternative.
In this example, Microsoft Lync clients, Polycom rooms and
endpoints, and Cisco CTS rooms can easily dial into a virtual
meeting room powered by the RealPresence Collaboration
Server (RMX). All three screens in the CTS 3000 can be seen
by the Microsoft Lync client through the screen arrangement
capabilities of the Polycom Multipoint Layout Application (MLA). An
illustrated view of what the CTS 3000 sees is depicted in gure 3.
Video resource virtualization support for Cisco/
Tandberg codian bridges
In addition to the gatekeeper function, the RealPresence
Virtualization Manager (DMA) is capable of load balancing up to
64 bridges for the most demanding environments, supporting
3 million user accounts, 75,000 device registrations, and
25,000 concurrent calls. Intelligent routing algorithms maximize
resource utilization and dynamically distribute calls across
both RealPresence Collaboration Server (RMX) and Cisco
TelePresence MCU MSE Series conference bridges. For SIP calls,
if an MCU fails, unlike the competitors solution, SIP calls stay
intact, routed transparently to another MCU.
Polycom interactive media delivery
Polycom

Video Content Management solutions support interactive

media delivery over disparate or hybrid networks. Active and
passive (on demand) caching to content routes greatly reduces
bandwidth utilized Polycom

Media Manager
is integrated with the Cisco (ACNS), Microsoft Windows Media
Servers, Blue Coat, and Riverbed solutions.
