Ipoh :- A 77-year-old man from Tambun here pulled a 10.6 tonne bus using only his
body's 'magnetic force' yesterday. T.L. Liew placed a steel contraption under his
armpit, hooked it to a chain, with the other end tied to the bus. He then pulled the
bus for 3.4 metres in less than a minute.
Even I am surprised by my extraordinary ability. In several days' time, I will
be celebrating my 77th birthday, he said after completing the extraordinary feat at a
charity home for disabled children here.
Liew began to make headlines at the age of 60 when he managed to stick
various household appliances made of steel onto his body without any aid. At
yesterday's event, his friend, K.T. Tan, 78, also lifted various objects, including
stones weighing 33 kg that stuck to his body. Tan said he discovered his body had

When love is a note
Three decades of writing to loved ones has made Sally an expert on just how
precious the written word is. She is known for her beautiful handwriting. She is
an old hand at decorating letters and envelopes. Her gesture shows the emphasis
she places on adding just the right touch for the recipient.
Sally has a wooden chest filled with hundreds of cards which are neatly
sorted in clear plastic and labelled according to the occasion, like 'Birthdays',
'Farewells', 'Friendships' and 'Festivals'. She loves bookshops and specialty paper
shops where she can buy specially designed cards. After attending a party or
event, she always sends handwritten 'thank you' cards. Friends appreciate this,
especially since the card is decorated with stickers and sprayed with perfume.
Finding a card with a nice cover is easier than finding one with the right
words that are meaningful to the recipient. This is why there's nothing like a
handwritten message. She sends a colourful card to friends who are sad or going
through a hard time.
Apart from her chest of cards and collection of old correspondence, Sally
also boasts a fine collection of books and journals.
Task B : Answer the questions that follow.

Singaporean-born M. Nasir grew up in a working-class society. He

attributed his musical inclinations to his brother who introduced him to the great
artistes of that era. He studied fine arts at Singapore's Nanyang School of Fine
Arts. He taught to survive. He then mixed with dramatists, musicians,
composers, band-boys. He wanted to make music when he understood more
about the world of music
M. Nasir is a doyen in the local music scene. 49-year-old M.Nasir has a
reputation as a reluctant and reclusive star. According to him, he does not enjoy
media intrusion for he feels the media is purely interested in sensation. He
prefers his music to speak for itself. He comes from a background of fine arts
and where religion played an important part. Added to that, he has his own
philosophy in life. He is basically an idealist and in whatever he does, there has
to be an element of honesty. He cannot tolerate pretense. His attitude has allowed
him to thrive as a songwriter, recording artiste and producer for twenty-five
years and even now whatever he does, has a freshness to it. No one should feel
jaded for if the man himself can still get excited when he creates something, then
his fans would feel that same vibrant passion. He realizes that audiences grow up
and their appetites change so one must move with the times. He feels that it is
necessary to be a pacesetter, not simply a follower. No artiste should be trapped
in his 'golden era for then he would not survive.
Today, Nasir who cites traveling as another passion, has work presented
to him every day. He would love to do films. He wants to produce or direct or
even act a small part. We look forward to that day when M. Nasir sits in the
director's chair.
Task B : Group work. Based on the details you have noted in the text above, answer

The day-to-day life of an ordinary person has changed with the invention
of the telephone. The telephone is a system which converts sound, specifically
the human voice to electrical impulses of various frequencies and then back to a
tone that sounds like the original voice. In 1861, Johann Philip Reiss in
Germany is said to have built a simple apparatus that changed sound to
electricity and back again to sound. But it was unable to transmit most
frequencies and was never fully developed.
A practical telephone was actually invented independently by two men in
the United States, Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell. Both men filed for a
patent on February 14, 1876 with Bell beating Gray by only two hours.
According to the famous story, the first telephone call occurred on March 6,
1876 when Bell who was in one room called to his assistant in another room,
Come here, Watson, I want you. From here Bell founded the Bell Telephone
Company [later AT & T] which grew to be the largest telephone company in the
world.
Here are some interesting facts about the telephone. In the first month of
the Bell Telephone Company's operations in 1877, only six telephones were sold.
When Bell's patent was sixteen months old, there were 778 telephones in use
Fifteen years after its invention in 1878, there were five million phones in USA.
Fifteen years after the invention of cellular phones, there were more than 33
million wireless phone American users.
In 1878, Rutherford B. Hayes was the first US president to have a
telephone installed in the White House. To whom did the Commander-in-Chief
make his first call? Alexander Graham Bell, of course, who was waiting for the
call some 13 miles away from the White House. As Bell was so excited, the
President's first words were supposed to have been, Please speak more slowly.
When Alexander Graham Bell died on August 4, 1922, millions of phones went
dead. In Bells honour, all phones served by the Bell Network in the USA and
Canada went silent for one minute. These days, phones never stop ringing.
