Introduction
The i-on Updater software allows you to
update the main operating software on the
i-on40 alarm system control unit. The
software runs on Windows XP or Vista, and
communicates with the i-on40 control unit
over USB cable.
The control unit printed circuit board (pcb)
provides a socket for a Mini-B USB plug.
Requirements
Any PC or laptop running Windows XP
sp3 or Vista.
At least 2MB of free hard disk.
A free USB port.
A USB cable ending with a Mini B plug.
The other end of the cable must be
connected to a spare USB port on the
computer that is going to run i-on
Updater.
Installation
Note: To install i-on Updater you must be
logged onto your PC with an account that
has administrators rights.
To install i-on Updater:
1. Download the installation file from
www.coopersecurity.co.uk. and save the
file to a convenient location on your PC
(for example the desktop).
The name of the installation file ends
with .msi. This is an executable file
(like files whose name ends in .exe).
2. Run the setup file by double clicking on
its icon.
The screen shows a setup wizard:

3. Click Next.
The setup wizard asks you for a location
on your hard disk to install the i-on
Updater software:

The default location is C:\Program
Files\Cooper Security\i-on Updater. If
you accept the default and click OK then
the installation program will create the
required folders. If you wish to run the
i-on Updater

software from another location click the
Browse button and navigate to your
preferred folder.
If you want every account on your PC to
be able to use Flashloader then click the
Everyone button.
4. Click Next.
The setup wizard shows you a final
screen to make sure that you want to go
ahead:

(Click Back if you want to retrace your
steps to an earlier stage. Click Cancel if
you want to stop the installation.)
5. Click Next.
The setup wizard shows a progress
screen:

When setup has finished the setup
wizard shows its final screen:

6. Click Close.
The i-on Updater is now installed on your
PC.
The installation software places an icon on
your desktop, looking like this:

You can start the i-on Updater by clicking
on the icon.

Using i-on Update
Utility
At the PC:
1. Obtain the file holding the i-on40
operating software that you wish to
install.
Note: Operating software for the i-on40
control unit is held in a file with a .bin
extension. The filename itself should give
you the version number.
2. Plug the USB cable into a free USB port
(leave the Mini B plug free).
3. Run i-on Updater by clicking on its icon.
i-on Updater displays its opening
window:

4. Click the Browse button.
i-on Updater displays a standard file
browser window.
5. Navigate to the .bin file holding the i-
on40 operating software you wish to
load. Select the file and click OK.
The Panel Software Location: field in
the i-on Updater window should show
the path to the .bin file, for example:

At the i-on40 control unit:
1. Enter the installer menu and then
remove mains power. (If you do not
enter the installer menu you will start a
tamper alarm in the next step.)
2. Open the end station lid and disconnect
the battery.
3. Plug the Mini B connector on the USB
cable into the USB socket on the i-on40
pcb.
4. Connect the battery and then briefly
short the Kick Start pins together (use a
wire link or the end of a small
screwdriver).
The i-on40 will start up and the
heartbeat LED should flash rapidly to
show that the i-on40 is operating in
update mode.
At the PC:
The i-on Updater window should show
i-on40 - Connected:

If the i-on Updater window shows a red
error message then remove and
immediately re-insert the USB Mini B
connector on the i-on40 pcb.
1. When the i-on Updater window shows
Connected click Send to Panel.
You should see:

i-on Updater starts sending the .bin file
to the i-on40. You should see a progress
bar like this:

When the i-on Updater has completed
sending the .bin file the PC screen
should show Download Complete:

At the i-on40:
1. Disconnect the USB cable.
The heartbeat LED goes dark.
2. Remove all power, including the battery.
3. Reconnect the battery, then the mains.
The heartbeat LED starts flashing (about
once per second). If the end station lid
is open then the control unit starts a
tamper alarm.
The display initially shows:
Language?
English
4. Press u or n to show other languages
on the bottom line of the display. for
example:
Language?
Nederlands
Note: i-on40UK software does not have this
feature. Carry on to the next step.
5. Press Y to select the language you
want.
From this point on, the display operates
in the selected language. If you want to
change the language later use Installer
Menu - System Options - Language.
The display shows:
COUNTRY DEFAULTS
*UK
6. Press u or n to show other countries,
for example:
COUNTRY DEFAULTS
Italy
Note: i-on40UK software does not have this
feature. Carry on to the next step.
7. Press Y to select the country you want.
The display shows:
A : Partition mode
B : Level set mode
8. Press A or B to select either a
partitioned system or a level setting
system.
The display shows:
Load Profile?

8. Either: Press Y to load the Profile.
Or: Press X to start with a blank
system
The end station loads your choice of
profile, and then shows:
The display shows:
WIRED ZONE TYPE
*2-wire FSL 2k2/4k7

10. Press u or n to show the range of
wiring types available, for example:
WIRED ZONE TYPE
4-wire CC
11. Press Y to select the wiring type you
intend to use for the wired zones
The display shows:
-ON40
00:00 01/01/2009
At this point, if the control unit lid was
open in step 3, then the sounders will
still be giving a tamper alarm.
12. Key in the default access code (1234).
The sounders fall silent. The keypad
displays shows, for example:
Press tick to reset

13. Press Y.
The display shows:
RESET FAULTS
Panel lid open
14. Press Y.
The display shows:
i-on40
00:00 01/01/2009
The navigation key will glow red until you
replace the control unit lid and acknowledge
the alert. The control unit is now ready for
programming.
