Senior bazaar: The
Germantown Senior Club
will present its annual
bazaar on Oct. 25, 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m., at the senior cen-
ter, W162 N11960 Park
Avenue. See page 8.
The Germantown Kiwanis Club presented a check
for $4,170 to Friends of Park & Recreation as proceeds
from the Taste of Germantown event held in July. The
presentation of the "big check" was made by Kiwanis
President William Steitz and Taste of Germantown
Committee Chairperson Carol Miller to President Ray
Baran and Board Member Cheri Schadeberg of
Friends of Park & Recreation.
Taste of Germantown is a culinary festival to help
promote area restaurants. It was sponsored by
Germantown Kiwanis to bring attention to their project
to build a Kiwanis Performing Arts Pavilion (KPAP) in
Fireman's Park.
Community support for this event was incredible,
said Miller. Plans for next year are already in the
works. Miller said the Taste of Germantown promotion
was so successful that Kiwanis will be planning three
similar events for next summer.
The money placed in the Friends of the Park fund
came from proceeds from Taste of Germantown as well
as donations to KPAP as a result of the event and a raf-
fle at the Germantown Community Golf Outing.
Germantown Kiwanis is a local chapter of Kiwanis
International. Their charter is to help teach leadership
roles to the youth of our community. The activities which
Germantown Kiwanis finances include the Germantown
High School Key Club, middle school level Builders
Club and elementary school K-Kids. Kiwanis also spon-
sors activities with the village Parks & Recreation
Department, Germantown Scholarship Fund and indi-

Muskego. The Warhawks rebounded with
wins over Kimberly (21-25, 25-19, 15-5)
and Brookfield Central (25-15, 25-11)

A blocked punt broke open a close
game for Menomonee Falls, as the Indians
added to a lead to defeat West Bend East
34-10 Aug. 29.
Menomonee Falls was holding to a 14-
10 lead, with the second touchdown coming
on a 5-yard run by Brandon Kvisto at the
8:38 mark of the third quarter.
Menomonee Falls defense, which
stopped a fourth-down conversion by East in
the first half, opened the fourth quarter by
allowing one first down before allowing the
Suns to punt. The punt was blocked and
recovered by Tyler Simcock at the East 20-
yard line. Michael Bowe ran it in on the next
play to give Menomonee Falls a 20-10 lead
after the extra point was unsuccessful.
The blocked punt really changed the
momentum of the game. Our kids respond-
ed really well, Menomonee Falls Coach
John Baker said.
Menomonee Falls defense stopped East
on its next possession, and Menomonee
Falls started a drive on its 32 yard line that
ended with a 1-yard run by Ben Knudsen,
giving Menomonee Falls a 27-10 lead with
5:28 remaining. Dontrell Handy scored the
final touchdown for Menomonee Falls on a
32-yard run with 23 seconds remaining.
When asked what was learned from the
win, Baker said weve got a lot of work
ahead of us. Weve got a young team and
every week is going to be a new fight and
weve got to learn to fight for four quarters.
Cedarburg 26, Hamilton 12:
Cedarburg scored the first 13 points of the
game. Hamiltons scores came on a recov-
ered fumble in the Cedarburg end zone by
Ty Botsford in the third quarter and an 8-
yard run by Isaiah Webb in the fourth quar-
ter.

on the offense. Germantown's final score
came when Steve Doran returned an inter-
ception 35 yards for a score with 2:22 left
in the second quarter.

Family thanks community for sup-
port
To the Editor:
It has been four months since that terrible
accident that took Josh and Monica Griebel
away from us, leaving behind five beautiful
children. It has not been an easy road, but
without all of the prayers, love and support, it
would have been unbearable.
How does one even begin to say thank
you when words just dont seem like enough?
The whole community has been our back-
bone during this tragic time in our lives. What
an incredible support system we have!
Our intention was to write out individual
thank you cards to everyone who has helped
us out in one way or another, but that list kept
growing and is still growing yet today. We did-
nt want to forget or leave anyone out, so we
decided to write one big thank you to all.
Where do we begin writing about all that
has been done for us? Countless hours have
been spent planning, organizing, recruiting,
coordinating, praying, etc. Everything from
benefits, individual cash donations, renova-
tions, chauffeuring, helping out with home-
work, babysitting, cleaning, donating items,
and donating of business services.the list
goes on and on! There have been so many
selfless acts of kindness and love.
Every dime raised in the Griebel name
will be put to good use, but unfortunately, we
havent been able to use any of it at this time,
so continued prayers are much needed, and
appreciated, as we are trying to make ends
meet.
Many anxieties have been laid to rest
after the last court date. We were so grateful
for the decision that allowed all of us to
remain together. We are now able to breathe
a little easier. We do know that all parties
involved truly do love the children.
You really have no idea what your sup-
port and help has meant to us. God has sent
you all to be our angels on Earth. Those that
said you would always be there for us have
been, and it means the world to us. Every day
we get a little stronger.
This verse comes to mind when we think of
all of you: If one falls down, his friend can
help him up. But pity the man who falls and
has no one to help him up. Ecclesiastes 4:10
You have all been there to pick us up!
We wish we could list everyone individu-
ally, who has helped us out, but that list would
go on and on. It is never ending!
A generous man will prosper; he who
refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
Proverbs 11:25
You have all been so generous to us! We
pray Gods blessings upon each and every
one of you! We hope in return to someday be
able to pay it forward, and bless others in
need, like we have been blessed.
Thank you, truly from the bottom of our
hearts! God bless you ALL!
Love,
The Griebel/Sickler Family

Go Kart tribute event at Slinger
Speedway
The 7th Annual Memorial Go-Kart
Tribute Event is a day dedicated to sup-
porting families that have experienced the
loss of a child. The event will be held at
Slinger Speedway on Saturday,
September 6, 2014 (rain date Sept.13).
Opening ceremonies begin with the
Sky Knights sky diving team at 4:00 pm.
The event is organized by members of
Memorial Go-Kart Inc., a non-profit organ-
ization, and sponsored by numerous busi-
nesses throughout the community.
Memorial Go-Kart racing was created
in 2008. Inspired by the youth of our com-
munity, Memorial Go-karts continues to
support families that have experienced the
loss of a child and provide youth with a
positive learning activity. Event highlights
include opening ceremonies with Sky
Knights sky dive team, Mayville High
School Choir and Slinger Fire Department
present the National Anthem, track rides,
silent auction, memorial tribute area, free
massages, silent auction, raffles, face and
hair painting, and go-kart racing in five
youth age divisions throughout the
evening. This family oriented event is the
finale to the Memorial Go-Kart Racing
Season and the trophy presentation will
take place at the event.
The Memorial Go-Kart Tribute Event is
a positive, fun, go-karting activity and
community event developed and planned
by community members and racing indi-
viduals. Youth learn to build the go-karts,
spend the summer practicing, learn racing
techniques and develop their pit, technical
and racing skills in preparation for this
annual event. Memorial Go-Kart racing
enhances our community and provides
youth with a positive focus. Additionally, it
is a memorial tribute to the youth of our
community we have lost and the first step
to the development of a community heal-
ing process. Advance tickets are $5 and
available at Smileys BP in Slinger and
Romies BP in Allenton. Tickets at the gate
are $8
Anyone interested in becoming
involved in our event or racing season

HOME IMPROVEMENT
H O M E
f
a
l
l
By Sam Erickson
Maybe its going back to school, maybe
its the shorter days or maybe its the blinding
lights signaling the holiday season ahead, but
fall home improvement projects often get
tossed aside or neglected in favor of more
exciting, interesting or pressing activities. This
short checklist will help guide you to the most
important elements to monitor and maintain in
your home, keeping you and your family safe
and maximizing the life of your home.
When the time changes, its time to check
the batteries in your smoke detectors. Making
sure they are still operational is quick and
easy and will bring peace of mind for anoth-
er six months. Similarly, every year, you
should check your fire extinguishers to ensure
that they have the proper pressure. Look for
dents and dings, and make sure the pin is in
the correct position. Fall is a great time to do
this, as youll be spending more time indoors.
If the pressure has fallen too low, find a pro-
fessional to recharge them for you.
Most people dont use their chimney in
the summer, and soot can build up over the
course of a year. Other debris like birds nests
or even leaves can create unsafe blockages.
Have your chimney inspected by a profes-
sional if you plan to use it through the winter.
Small animals will be looking for a warm
place to sleep, and your home is a great
option for them. Perform routine pest control in
your area, watching out for places where ani-
mals might get into your home.
Most importantly, youll want to have your
furnace and heating system checked by a pro-
fessional. This can save you big money on
your heating bill, and an inspection can
ensure that there isnt a dangerous buildup of
carbon monoxide in your home. Furnace and
air filters should be changed regularly to max-
imize safety and efficiency. If you are plan-
ning on using space heaters, humidifiers or de-
humidifiers, they are a great addition to your
checklist. Clean them off and inspect the heat-
ing and electrical elements for safety, particu-
larly if they have been out of sight in storage

(StatePoint) Before you turn off your AC
system for the season, consider having it
checked out by a certified contractor. If its
older or has been giving you problems, you
might want to replace it.
It may not be top of mind, but fall is
actually the ideal time to think about your
homes cooling system, says Frank
Landwehr, VP of Marketing at Emerson
Climate Technologies.
There are five reasons why consumers
who consider this important home upgrade
during the off-season often have much better
outcomes, say the experts at AC & Heating
Connect.
Contractor considerations: Give your-
self plenty of time to identify the best AC con-
tractor for your installation. Contractors in
between cooling and heating seasons will be
more available to help solve your specific
problems.
New features: Learn about the latest
technology and features available for HVAC
systems, as a lot has changed in the past 20
years. Consider systems with features ranging
from superior humidity reduction to noise
reduction to remote control systems and ener-
gy-efficient programmable thermostats.
Dual fuel heat pumps that can use either
electricity or natural gas for heating are
another recent innovation to consider.
Zombie heat pump: So-called zom-
bie heat pumps appear to be alive and run-
ning, but in reality are not performing opti-
mally, or at all. If your air conditioner dou-
bles as a heat pump, fall is the time to have
your system checked out for the heating sea-
son. Fall is also a good time to have a con-
ventional furnace checked out by a contrac-
tor. If its older like the AC unit, you might be
better off having them both replaced at once.

for the warmer months.
Finally, check the caulking around your
home. Caulk is a cheap compound that any-
one can apply, and it will reduce the amount
of energy loss from your home and prevent
water damage to flooring, walls and windows
in the kitchen and bathroom.
This is a big listand its certainly not com-
prehensivebut all of these things can be
accomplished in one weekend day. Spending
minimal time improving and protecting your
home for the winter season will provide great
returns.
Recalculations: Have your contractor
run new calculations on your home. Changes
since that old AC system was installed can
affect your needs. For example, if you added
insulation, upgraded to more efficient win-
dows, knocked out walls or added a room,
you might need a different system size than
before -- and the wrong system can be prob-
lematic.
A system thats too small wont keep up
on the hottest days. A system thats too large
will cycle too much, causing wide swings in
temperature -- and wont necessarily remove
all the humidity from your home.
Further, if you plan to close the AC vents
in seldom-used rooms, look for a system with
at least two steps of capacity modulation.
Closing room vents and doors effectively
makes your house appear smaller to your
HVAC system, which could significantly dam-
age the system or cause it to fail prematurely.
Regulations: Know the latest govern-
ment regulations and rebates before you buy.
New regulations going into effect January 1,
2015, might affect the minimum efficiency
standard in your region. Give yourself time to
consider whether you want to replace your
system ahead of the change.
Replacing HVAC systems in fall can be a
smart maneuver. By planning ahead, you can
make smarter choices for your home and
your comfort.

what type of system might be best for your
home.

POLICE BLOTTER
A Germantown School District ele-
mentary teacher who was involved in a
vandalism incident at the Jefferson
County Fair over the summer has started
the year on administrative leave.
The teacher, April Kay Smith,
received a disorderly conduct citation
from the Jef ferson County Sherif f's
Department July 9 after it was deter-
mined that she destroyed campaign
signs for Republican Party candidates.
According to the Jefferson County
Sheriff's Department report, a witness
observed Smith destroying the signs and
contacted the Sheriff's Department. The
witness wrote a report in which she stat-
ed she observed Smith pull the signs out
of the ground and step all over them.
At first, Smith denied damaging the
signs and said she was Germantown
kindergarten teacher.
When reached for comment Sept. 3,
Germantown Administrator Jeff Holmes
confirmed a report at the Wisconsin
Reporter Website which is operated
by the Franklin Center for Public Affairs
that Smith had been placed on admin-
istrative leave.
I am not in a position to comment
on an ongoing investigation process, but
I can confirm that Ms. Smith's adminis-
trative leave will continue through the
beginning of the school year. As a result,
Ms. Smith will not be teaching kinder-
garten class as the school year begins.
We will provide more information once
our investigation and review is com-
plete, Holmes stated.
Holmes also confirmed that that the
district have received many forms of
correspondence but was not in a posi-
tion to comment on that, either.
Homes said the district hoped to
have the issue resolved by the end of the
month.

The Washington County Full Service
Clean Sweep is an opportunity for coun-
ty residents to properly dispose or recy-
cle unwanted hazardous chemicals,
electronic goods, pharmaceutical med-
ication, and used tires. This is the fifth
consecutive year for the Full Service
Clean Sweep Program which has been
coordinated by the Land and Water
Conservation Division of the Planning
and Parks Department; while partnering
with the Countys Health Department,
Sheriffs Department and the Highway
Department. The drive-through collec-
tion makes this program simple and effi-
cient for participants. A $10 pre-regis-
tration fee is required for the hazardous
waste and electronic goods; participa-
tion is limited to 250 vehicles per event.
The Pharmaceutical Collection does not
require anyone to pre-register and par-
ticipation is unlimited. Used Tire
Collection participation is also unlimit-
ed; a maximum of 20 tires will be
accepted per participant and disposal
fees apply at the time of collection.
The next Full Service Clean Sweep
event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11,
8 a.m. to noon, at the Washington
County Hwy Facility, 900 Lang St. in
West Bend.

Waste and E-Goods (First come, First
serve)

County plans household, agricultural

The portion of the property tax devot-
ed to local technical colleges will decline
this year due to a bill approved by the
Legislature in the spring.
Wisconsin Act 145 was approved
earlier this year. According to informa-
tion from Kathleen Hohl, communications
and events director for Milwaukee Area
Technical College (MATC),
$406,000,000 of operating funding will
be provided by the state for all 16 tech-
nical colleges and a corresponding
amount will be reduced from the proper-
ty tax bills in 2015.
Germantown is part of the MATC dis-
trict. For MATC, the Act 145 share is esti-
mated to be $145 million. As a result,
MATC's operating tax levy will decrease
by around $84 per $100,000 of "tax-
able equalized valuation" for properties
within MATC's district, according to
Hohl.
According to information from the dis-
trict Web site, the rate for MATC will be
1.29 per $1,000 equalized value, a
decline of 39.68 percent from last year.
In the budget document, MATC
District Board Chairperson Bobbie R.
Webber and President Michael R. Burke
noted significant financial challenges
for the district in developing the 2014-15
budget. While the Wisconsin Technical
College System board increased tuition
3 percent, state funding not including Act
145 remained constant at 10.8 percent.
Given the context of constrained
resources at state and local levels, the
leadership team and the MATC district
board, working with our five local
unions, developed a number of strategies
for (2014-15) that both increase other
revenue and simultaneously reduce on-
going expenditures, Webber and Burke
stated in the budget document.
The document states that Local 212
faculty and para-professional members
will contribute to the Wisconsin
Retirement System as of the 2013-14
budget year, increased grant production
and grant awards will allow the college
Tech college portion of property tax bill to decline
to offset salaries and receive direct cost
reimbursement, savings in energy will
occur through conservation and renew-
able initiatives and there will be reduced
healthcare and pension costs through
union contracts that provide for more
cost sharing by employee groups.
