OBIEE VS BAM

Business Process Management, is used for real time operational analytics while OBIEE can be used for
strategic planning.

Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g (OBIEE) is a comprehensive business
intelligence platform that delivers a full range of capabilities - including interactive dashboards, ad hoc
queries, notifications and alerts, enterprise and financial reporting, scorecard and strategy
management, business process invocation, search and collaboration, mobile, integrated systems
management and more.

Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition Plus has the following components:
BI Server: Common enterprise business model and abstraction layer
BI Answers: Ad-hoc query and reporting
BI Interactive Dashboards: Highly interactive dashboards
BI Delivers: Proactive business activity monitoring and alerting
BI Publisher: Enterprise reporting and distribution of "pixel-perfect" reports
Office Plug-in: embed, interact, and create BI content from within Office documents
Hyperion Interactive Reporting: Intuitive and highly interactive ad-hoc reporting
Hyperion SQR Production Reporting: High volume, presentation-quality formatted report generation
Hyperion Financial Reporting: Formatted, book-quality financial and management reporting
Hyperion Web Analysis: Web-based online analytical processing (OLAP) analysis, presentation, and
reporting

Advantages of using OBIEE
a) OBIEE will be the right tool to do that and analyze the patterns over a longer timeframe.

b) High-volume production reporting.

c) Integrates with any data source, extraction, transformation and load (ETL) tool, major business
application, application server, security infrastructure, portal technology, or any other front-end
and analytical tools.

d) Integrates with databases including IBM DB/2,Teradata, Microsoft SQL Server; SAP Business
Information Warehouse (BW), Microsoft Analysis Services; flat files; XML data; and unstructured
data.
Disadvantages of using OBIEE
a) BI is more of afterthought than real time processing. Alerts cant be generated even if there is an
failure at real time. BI dashboards refresh at predetermined intervals by polling or querying
databases.

b) They are essentialy batch process and are not real time. Real time and proactive
changes/decisions cant be made easily using OBIEE.

Advantages of using BAM:
a) Visibility into day-day operations-Faster response to deviations from the trend.

b) BAM is ideal to track processes and operations in real time and take action to address any
bottlenecks or other "abnormal" behavior.

c) BAM solutions additionally provide trouble notification functions. For example, whole groups
of people can be sent e-mails, voice or text messages, according to the nature of the
problem.
Disadvantages of using BAM:
a) Do not use BAM as a data repository, and consider other better suited products for this (e.g.,
OBIEE).
b) BAM is not intended for extremely large amounts of data.

c) It is not possible to provide user sorting at the column level, there is no way to dynamically modify
column widths in the reports, navigation is cumbersome, and search capabilities are weak (e.g.,
particularly working with NULL data).

d) BAM web application runs only on Internet Explorer
In 11gR1, there is an integration available for OBIEE and BAM that allows the user to view real time data
along with the historical data. Please see the tech notes section on BAM OTN site. You can add BAM
views to OBIEE dashboards and vice versa. BAM alerts can kick off ibots . Also, using the external data
source functionality in BAM, the user can get access to the catalog in OBIEE i.e logical schema.
