EME 2026: Engineering Design II

NPK/YTC Page 1

Design Project (50%)

Task 1: Before you embark on your design work, select one of the following scenarios.

a. The year is 2050 and the first colony is being started on the planet of Mars. You and your
team of engineers are bidding for the contracting job on the Mars 2060 Project.

b. The planetary habitability of Earth is slowly regressing by the year 2050. The
government of the United Kingdom has tasked you and your team of engineers to look
into habitation possibilities in the island of Tristan da Cunha.

c. Due to the immenseness of Malaysia's population and over-urbanisation by the year 2050,
the government is driven to seek out and develop other uninhabited islands within
Malaysia for the habitation of Malaysians. You and your team of engineers have been
tasked to handle a project on one of the uninhabited islands known as Pulau Tiga.

Task 2: Based on the scenario you have selected from Task 1, follow the following
instructions for your project.

You have been asked to design a model of a family dwelling that will house at least two adults
and two children. A three dimensional model of your creation will illustrate an environmentally
self-supporting habitat, with the exception of food manufacture, furniture and household
accessories. For example, your design must illustrate how the family unit will be heated or
cooled, how power will be generated, how waste will be managed, etc. You are expected to
create a simulated model, prepare oral presentations and a report. You will need to investigate
various forms of alternative power sources, including: Solar, thermal, water, natural gas.
Students will also need to investigate appropriate waste management systems and water
treatment processes.

Your model design must involve complex engineering analysis that befits the 5th learning
outcome of this subject, which is to "design solution for engineering system, component, or
processes, with proper engineering analysis (cognitive: creating level 6)". Hence, by no means
are you allowed to base the given task on simple designs.

The ideas of your design need not be solely based on the syllabus of Engineering Design II
(Springs, Drive Transmissions, Gears etc). The ideas of your design can incorporate complex
engineering analysis from different areas in mechanical engineering as well (Example: Applied
Statics, Applied Dynamics, Engineering Graphics, Strength of Materials, Engineering Design I,
etc).

This project is a group project and should include no more and no less than 5 students per group.
The groups will be divided within your respective tutorial groups. As such, nobody is allowed to
switch tutorial groups. If you are not able to make it for your tutorial/studio sessions, please
make sure you have approval from FET office to be absent during your tutorial session and do
not switch to another forthcoming tutorial group after your session. Any group who has more or
less than 5 members will be penalised.

For this project, each group is required to present for 10 minutes for the following occasions:

1. Progress Report Presentation 1 (2.5%) - Chaired by Dr. Yap Tze Chuen
2. Progress Report Presentation 2 (2.5%) - Chaired by Mr. Ng Poh Kiat
3. Final Report Presentation (5%) - Chaired by both Mr. Ng and Dr. Yap

Your presentation will be graded based on a rubrics assessment and it will be worth 10%. At the
end of this course (As per the OBE lecture plan), you are required to submit a report which will
be worth 40%. The report should be about 60 to 70 pages long (Font type: Times New Roman,
Font size: 12, Line spacing: 1.5 pt, Spacing before/after line: None, Report binding style:
Stapled). All in all, the total marks for this project will be 50% (10% project presentation and 40%
project report). Your project should include the following chapters:

1. Chapter 1: Problem Definition (5%) - 3 to 5 pages
a. Background
b. Problem definition

2. Chapter 2: Information Gathering and Concept Generation (5%) - 18 to 20 pages
a. Benchmarking
b. Information from the internet/patents/products/literature/survey
c. Brainstorming
d. Conceptualisation
e. Concept evaluation and selection

3. Chapter 3: Product Architecture (5%) - 3 to 5 pages
a. Arrangements of the physical elements to carry out the function

4. Chapter 4: Configuration and Parametric Design (15%) - 23 to 25 pages
a. Preliminary selection of materials and manufacturing
b. Modelling and Sizing of parts
c. Final dimensions and tolerances
d. Design for manufacturability
e. Cost analysis

5. Chapter 5: Detailed Design (10%) - 13 to 15 pages
a. Detailed drawings and specifications
b. Bill of materials
c. Implications of design

For the last two chapters, students are allowed to use computer-aided design (CAD), modelling
and simulation software. In the final section on Implications of design/product students are to
explain how their work relates to the importance of sustainability and cost-effectiveness in
design and development of professional engineering solutions, and their impacts in societal and
environmental contexts.

The studio sessions (as specified in the OBE lecture plan) are to help you with the progress of
this project. Hence, please present your progresses during these sessions (according to your
tutorial groups) and ask SPECIFIC, LOGICAL and REASONABLE questions that you are sure
you need help on during the studio session.

Please do not ask questions such as "how do I do this project/chapter?", "what information do I
need to get good marks?", "where can I get the formula for this relation?", "what does this word
mean?" or "how do I calculate this?" These are questions you should ask yourselves and discuss
with your group members. It is much more preferable to do some background work on the topic
first, come out with a draft and present it to the lecturer first. In other words, practice solving
your own problems first before seeking help.

Before asking a question by e-mail, in class or during consultation, it is suggested that you do the
following:

Try to find an answer by searching the archives of the university's library.
Try to find an answer by searching the Web.
Try to find an answer by reading a handbook, manual, research book or research article.
Try to find an answer by inspection, observation, survey or experimentation.
Try to find an answer by discussing with your group members.

Please be informed that the examiners (Dr. Yap and Mr. Ng) have the right to deduct any
amount of marks from your report if it does not adhere to all of the abovementioned
instructions. The deadline to submit your design report (according to the OBE lecture plan) is
on 10 September 2014 during lecture class. Any submissions after this date will be penalised
with the deduction of substantial amount of marks.
