RJEC Lifetime Achievement, Engineer of the Year, and
Community Service Awards

The Richmond Joint Engineers' Council (RJEC) is seeking nominations for
the annual Lifetime Achievement, Engineer of the Year and Community
Service Awards. Deadline for applications is December 2nd, and all
awards will be presented at the RJEC Banquet on February 20th at the
Jefferson Hotel. More information and nomination forms can be found at

2014 Virginias Student Conference
Preliminary Competition Details

Volunteers are needed to help judge the following events. Please
contact Tom Baber, ttb@virginia.edu for more information and to
volunteer.

Please direct all competition related questions to Ryan Abalos at
ryan.abalos@virginia.edu. Some event details are not currently
available. They will be posted no later than October 31, 2013. Rules
currently under revision will be provided as soon as the revised rules
become available.

Concrete Canoe Competition
The Concrete Canoe Competition will be held on April 4-5, 2014, and will
abide by the national rules. All of the competition except the
presentations will take place at Walnut Creek Park, about 8 miles from
the University of Virginia grounds on Friday, April 4. The presentations
will take place on the grounds of the University of Virginia on Saturday,
April 5. All schools competing in the Concrete Canoe Competition should
visit the following website to obtain a copy of the rules:

Environmental Competition
Teams of 3-4 students will be presented with a water treatment
challenge. All materials and equipment will be provided. Students are
asked to bring their own eye protection.

Hardy Cross Cup
This competition will follow rules and regulations adopted by the
Virginias Conference from the Virginia Section, ASCE. The rules, as well
as a judging rubric, are in the process of revision by the Virginia Section,
and will be provided by e-mail and on the conference web site as soon as
an updated version is available.

Marr Technical Paper
This competition will follow rules and regulations adopted by the
Virginias Conference from the Virginia Section, ASCE. The rules, as well

Surveying Competition
Teams of 3-4 students will be given a challenge that utilizes a wide
range of surveying knowledge and skills. Further details will be released
in Mailer II.

Steel Bridge Competition
The Steel Bridge Competition will follow the national rules posted by
AISC. The display judging will be held at Walnut Creek Park on Friday,
April 4, 2014, and the remainder of the competition will be held on the
grounds of the University of Virginia on Saturday April 5. Further details
will follow in mailer II. All schools competing in the Steel Bridge
Competition should visit the following website to obtain a copy of the

Sustainable Land Development Competition
Teams comprised of 3-4 students will be given an existing undeveloped
or partially developed site and asked to create a sustainable design
concept. Participants will be given basic development criteria, existing
information about the site, and additional "sustainability" criteria as
appropriate for the task. Teams will work in a Charette setting for a
prescribed amount of time to develop their concept, then must present
the concept to a panel of judges.

Technical Problem Solving Competition
Teams of 3-4 students will be presented with a technical problem they
must solve utilizing their knowledge of transportation planning and
design. The competition will be held April 5 and further details will be
released in Mailer II.

11th Annual ASCE Golf Tournament

The 11th Annual Golf Tournament went very well! The weather was
perfect and everyone agreed that Brandermill Country Club (BCC) was a
great place to spend the day. We had 6 teams and raised over $1,000
for the educational outreach fund. Many thanks to everyone for their
support.
