ASCE June Branch Meeting - How to Kill Your Company (Without

Really Trying)
June 17, 12:00 PM, Westwood Club, Richmond, VA

President's Message

I have often been asked why someone should
join ASCE, or if they are already a member,
why they should be more involved. According
to the ASCE National, the top five reasons are:
To use ASCE's career resources
Access the latest technical information
Engage in government relations
Excite kids with K-12 outreach
Networking
When condensed like they are in the above list, I admit it might not
seem like much. Though, if you think about it, how many organizations
give you the opportunity to do all of this? The Richmond Branch has
opportunities in every single one of these areas, but we only see a small
fraction of our membership involved. Through conversing with other
branches and sections, it seems that this is quite often the case.

Over the past year, I have gotten the chance to talk to several of our
active members about why they are involved. Many of the responses
have revolved around the fact that they came to an event, had a good

time, and decided to keep coming back. Some of our members have
gotten job offers from a fellow member, made a connection that has
lead to new professional partnerships, or been able to negotiate a higher
salary based on the ASCE salary survey. Personally, three of my closest
friends are people I met through ASCE involvement, and the experiences
I have had in ASCE have allowed me to advance my career to the place
where it is now.

As we continue to grow and expand our branch, there are plenty of

opportunities for new and exciting things. If you can, I strongly
encourage you to volunteer to join us for an event, or to help out with a
committee that interests you. You never know what might happen!
