It represents the Gond art, an art practised by one of the largest tribes, the Gondi (Gond)
people spreading over the eastern-middle part of India. The story of animal evolution has been
told through this work in the form of a flow chart. At the top-left corner, unicellular organisms
originate in water setting out the million year- journey of evolution. There emerges
multicellular aquatic organisms such as Annelida, Arthropod, fish and reptiles. These reptiles
evolve to gigantic dinosaurs in the middle of the top. There destruction due to volcanic eruption
is shown at the right top side of the canvas. Some of the evolved to fly. The bottom left part
shows other birds taking their food from a tree. A woodpecker is seen pecking the tree while
others having fruits and honey from flowers. Below there are frogs- sand and grass. As a
consequence of desertification the grass frogs are shown to be eaten up by carnivorous birds
and hence the sand ones become dominant later. In the bottom middle part, a larger bird is
killing a smaller one under a tree. At the right end there are several members from the ape
family evolving to a human being shown as a woman.
The work of colour reflects an artistic expertise throughout the painting. The scenes are
built in bright colours contrasting on white (or very light) background. More than twelve colours
including mostly orange, brown, and blue, green, yellow have been used gracefully throughout
the space. Aquatic life is shown in deep blue water environment in a tiny proportion of the
canvas, however the dinosaurs occupy a comparatively large area. The availability of space for
bigger creatures brings spatial equilibrium to the work. The impact of volcanic has been
depicted with orange-yellow colour with burning leaves on the tree and pink scales on the
dinosaurs back. But the choice of colour has not always been realistic, the guerrilla has been
painted with ridiculously with green, white and yellow. An urge of showcasing detailed delicate
patterns is what one can notice while examining the painting. The scales and stripes on
dinosaurs back have been designed patiently to the artists pleasure. The wings of the birds,
the body of the frogs, the tree-stems, apes and the dress of the woman, all are embellished
with detailed design. Even the lava wall of the volcano are covered with white dots and lines.
These patterns of colouring include both straight and curved lines, dots and ellipses keeping
balance in the varieties of elements. The trees are also colourful with blue, violet, brown leaves
and yellow, pink stems. The smaller creatures like frogs and birds are repeated in the painting.
So there are plenty of animal figures across the canvas, i.e. its the characters which are
important here rather than the nature surrounding. The movement of the story can be
described in at least two directions. One can sweep across the canvas horizontally and the start
the next row with birds and amphibians leading to the apes and human being. Alternately one
can also go column wise. Hence the motion of the painting is multidirectional.
