1. Food A contains 20 units of vitamin X and 40 units of vitamin Y per gram. Food B contains 30
units each of vitamin X and Y. The daily minimum human requirements of vitamin X and Y
are 900 and 1200 units respectively. How many grams of each type of food should be
consumed so as to minimize the cost. If food A costs 60 paise per gram and food B costs 80
paise per gram. Formulate the problem as LPP. (August

2. An electric appliance company produces two products. Refrigerators and ranges. Production
takes place in two separate departments I and II . Refrigerators are produced in the
department I and ranges in department II. The company products are sold on weekly basis.
The weekly production cannot exceed 25 refrigerators and 35 ranges. The company regularly
employs a total of 60 workers in two departments. A refrigerator requires 2 man weeks
labour while a range requires one man week labour. A refrigerator contributes a profit of Rs.
60 and a range contributes a profit of Rs. 40. How many units of refrigerators and ranges
should the company produce to realize the maximum profit? Formulate the above as LPP.

3. A company produces 2 types of hats. Every hat-A requires twice as much labour time as the
second hat-B. If the company produces only hat-B then it can produce a total of 500 hats a
day. The market limits daily sales of hat-A and hat-B to 150 to 250 hats. The profit on hat-A
and hat-B are Rs 8 and Rs 5 respectively. Solve graphically to get the optimal solution. (July

4. An animal feed company has to produce 200 kg of a feed mixture consisting of ingredients
X1and X2. X1 costs RS.3 per kg and X2 Rs.5 per kg. Not more than 80 kg of X1 can be used
and at least 60 kgs of X2 must be used. Find how much of each ingredients should be used in
the mix of the company to minimize the cost. (July

5. A retired person wants to invest up to an amount of Rs.30, 000 in fixed income securities.
His broker recommends investing in two bonds: Bond-A yielding 7% and bond-B yielding
10%. After some consideration, he decides to invest at most Rs.12, 000 in Bond-B and at
least Rs.6, 000 in Bond-A. He also wants the amount invested in Bond-A to be at least equal
to the amount invested in Bond-B. What should the broker recommend if the investor wants
to maximize his return on investment? Solve graphically. Feb 2004,

6. A company manufactures two products A and B. Each unit of B takes twice as long to
produce as one unit of A and if the company were to produce only A it would have time to
produce 2000 units per day. The availability of the raw materials is sufficient to produce
1500 units per day of both A and B combined. Product B requiring a special ingredient only
600 units can be made per day. If A fetches a profit of Rs. 2 per unit and B a profit of Rs. 4
per unit. Find the optimum product mix.

P1 P2
Cutting hours/unit 2 1
Finishing hours/unit 3 3
Profit/unit Rs.6 Rs. 4
Maximum Sales (Units/week) -- 200
The number of cutting hours available per week is 390 and number of finishing hours
available per week is 810. How much should be produced of each product in order to
achieve maximum profit for the company? Also solve graphically.

9. An agriculturist has a farm with 126 acres. He produced Radish, Mutter and Potato.
Whatever he raises is fully sold in the market. He gets Rs.5 for Radish per kg, Rs.4 for mutter
per kg and Rs. 5 for potato per kg. The average yield is 1,500 kg of Radish per acre, 1,800 kg
of Mutter per acre and 1,200 kg of potato per acre. To produce each 100kg of Radish and
Mutter and to produce each 80 kg of potato a sum of Rs. 12.50 has to be used for manure.
Labour required for each acre to raise the crop is 6 man days for Radish and Potato each and
5 man-days for mutter. A total of 500 man-days of labour at a rate of Rs.40 per man-days are
available. Formulate this as a LP model to maximize the agriculturalists total profit. July

10. Feather byke Inc. manufactures 3 types of bicycles viz. sporty 200 (S200), Endura 300 (E300)
and Handy 500 (H500). The plant has a machine shop and an assembly shop. Each S200
requires 15 hours in machine shop and 5 hours in assembly shop, while E300 and H500
require 15 hours in machine shop and 5 hours in assembly shop, while E300 and H500
require 13 hours and 20 hours in machine shop and 4 hours and 8 hours in assembly shop
respectively. The total machine shop capacity is 4000 hour per month and that of assembly
shop is 1500 hours per month. The working capital requirement for S200, E300 and H500 are
Rs. 2400, RS.4000 and Rs. 6000 per month respectively and the total available fund per
month shall not exceed Rs.1, 20,000. The combined production of S200 and E300 shall at
least be 240 units per month for Feather byke Inc. to break even. Also, the company was
given the license to manufacture bicycles subject to producing 100 Nos. of H500 handicap
cycles per month although manufacturing H500 results in a loss of Rs.200 per unit. The profit
margin earned by the company in producing S200 and E300 are Rs.500 and Rs. 300 per unit
respectively.
Formulate the above as a linear programming model stating the objective function and the

11. Ex-serviceman Airport Services Company is considering the purchase of new vehicle for the
transportation between Delhi airport and hotels in the city. There are three vehicles under
consideration: Station Wagons, Mini buses and large buses. The purchase price would be Rs.
1, 45,000 for each Station Wagon; Rs. 2, 50,000 for the Mini bus and Rs. 4, 00,000 for large
buses each. The board of directors has a maximum amount of Rs. 50 lakhs for these
purchases. Because of the heavy air travel, the new vehicles would be utilized at maximum
capacity regardless of the type of vehicles purchased. The expected net annual profit would
be RS. 15,000 for the Station wagon; Rs. 35,000 for the minibus and Rs. 45,000 for large bus.
The company has hired 30 new drivers for the new vehicles. They are qualified drivers for all
the three types of vehicles. The maintenance department has the capacity to handle an
additional 80 Station Wagons. A minibus is equivalent to 1

Station Wagons and each

large bus equivalent to 2 Station Wagons in terms of their use of the maintenance
department. Formulate the problem as LP model.

12. Consider the following problem faced by a production planner in a soft drink plant.
He has two bottling machines A and B. A is designed for 8 ounce bottles and B for 16
ounces bottles. However, each can be used on both types with some loss of efficiency.
The manufacturing data is as follows.

Machine 8 Ounce Bottles 16 Ounce Bottles
A 100/ minutes 40/minutes
B 60/minutes 75/minutes
The machine can run 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. Profit on 8 ounce bottle is 15
paise and on a 16 ounce bottle 25 paise. Weekly production of the drink cannot
exceed 3, 00,000 ounce and the market can absorb 25,000, 8 ounce bottle and 7,000
16 ounce bottles per week. Formulate this problem as LPP.

combination of two stock portfolios with maximum investment allowed in their
portfolio set at Rs. 75,000. The first portfolio has an average return of 10% whereas
the second has 20%. In terms of risk factor associated with these portfolios, the first
has a risk rating of 4 (on a scale from 0 to 10) and the second has 9. Since you want to
maximize your return you will not accept an average rate of return below 12% or a
risk factor above 6. How much should you invest in each portfolio? Formulate this as
a LPP and solve graphically. July
