Homework 1

EE 603: DSP and its Applications, Autumn 2013

Instructor: Animesh Kumar, EE, IIT Bombay
Instructions: Two (and only two) problems from Set-A has to be submitted by 5:00pm on 12/08/13 (Monday).
Please follow the given instructions carefully.
If solutions from two or more students resemble or are copied from each other, all the concerned students
will get 5 marks. You must write your own solution in your own words.
Each question should be submitted on a dierent sheet. Write your name+roll no. on each page of your
submitted solution. Make a photocopy of your homework submission. Submit your Homework + photocopy
(homework submission and its copy should not be stapled together) in the box kept in EE-Oce for EE603
Homework. The box will become available on Monday morning. If you have queries, then meet the instructor
or the TA during oce hours.
Set-A
1. A discrete-time LTI system has the impulse response
h[n] =
sin(n/2)
n
.
Examine if this discrete-time system is BIBO stable or not.
2. Let x(t) = sinc(t) + 3sinc(t 2) + 2sinc(t 3) + sinc(t 4). Find the value of the inner product
sinc(t 1), x(t). Is the energy of x(t) nite? If yes, nd its value. If no, why not?
3. Consider a constant coecient dierence equation
y[n] +
1
2
y[n 1] = x[n] +
1
3
x[n 1]
where x[n] is the input and y[n] is the output. It is known that y[1] = 1 and x[n] is causal. Is the system
linear? If x[n] is delayed to x[n 1], will the corresponding output also delay by one unit? Explain your
answer.
4. Consider a continuous time LTI system with impulse response
h(t) = exp(2t)u(t).
Find amathematical expression for the output of this lter for the input x(t) = cos(t) + cos(2t). Box
your nal answers.
Set-B
1. Consider a system with input signal x[n] and output signal y[n] related by
y[n] = x[n] (g[n] + g[n 1]) .
Choose a non-constant signal g[n] such that the output is non-zero and the system is time invariant. Now
choose a non-constant signal g[n] such that the system is not time invariant.
2. Show that a discrete-time LTI system is BIBO stable if and only if its impulse response h[n] is absolutely
summable, i.e.,

kZ
|h[k]| < .
Thus, the impulse response of an LTI system is sucient to characterize BIBO stability of the system.
1
3. Consider a linear but time-varying system. A two-dimensional impulse response h[n, k] is sucient to
characterize the system output as a function of input. Show that the output is given by,
y[n] =

kZ
h[n, k]x[k],
where h[n, k] is the response of the system to an input [n k], k Z.
4. Some properties of convolution are reviewed in this problem.
(a) Show that the convolution operation on two signals is commutative, i.e., x[n] y[n] = y[n] x[n] for
any signals x[n] and y[n].
(b) Show that the convolution of two causal signals x[n] and y[n] is also causal.
(c) Assume that the signals x[n] and y[n] are causal and are non-zero only for 0 n L and 0 n M,
respectively. Show that x[n] y[n] is non-zero only for 0 n (L + M).
(NOTE) This result can be extended to non-causal signals as well.
