Froebel Gifts
Mother learned that Frederick
Froebel taught that children should
not be allowed to draw from casual
appearances of Nature until they
has first mastered the basic forms
lying hidden beneath
appearances. Cosmic, geometric
elements were what should first be
made visible to the child mind.

Frank Lloyd Wright, Winslow House, drawn for
publication in the Wasmuth Portfolio, 1910-12
The big fireplace below, inside, now became a
place for a real fire, justified the great size of this
chimney outside. .. The integral fireplace became
an important part of the building itself in the houses
I was allowed to build out there on the prairie. It
refreshed me to see the fire burning deep in the
masonry of the house itself.

Auguste Perret, 57B rue
Franklin, Paris, 1903,
Garage, rue Ponthieu, Paris,
1905
Auguste Perret had just finished the Ponthieu Garage
and his building in the rue Franklin. He told everyone, in
martial tones, I work in reinforced concrete. Indeed, it
really was a battle.
Auguste Perret also said: A construction must be
perfect ornament hides imperfections. I became
passionately interested in construction.

I would like architects not just students to pick up a pencil and draw
a plant, a leaf, the spirit of a tree, the harmony of a sea shell, formations
of clouds, the complex play of waves spreading out on a beach, so as to
discover different expressions of an inner force. I would like their hands
and minds to become passionately involved in this kind of intimate
investigation. Letter from Le Corbusier to Rex Martienssen, 23
Septmber 1936
