ROLE

Provide the provision of high quality, impartial advice to students in relation to housing matters,

Interpret and apply complex rules and regulations in relation to Housing Law and current legislation,

Establish yourself as the recognised point of contact for students and university departments,

RESPONSIBILITIES

Assess the needs of students with housing issues and provide advice to help them find acceptable
solutions to their housing problems,

Provide advice on private tenancy related matters, dealing with cases involving possible illegal
eviction or harassment,

Interpreting and explaining written information, e.g. letters from landlords to clients,

Interviewing students, assessing their problems and finding possible solutions,

Refer to other sources of specialist advice where appropriate,

Plan and co-ordinate work to provide a quality service and ensure that information received is
processed and managed effectively,

Organise all aspects of own work ensuring that records are accurate and up to date, procedures are
being operated in a timely fashion and that 'difficult housing issues are properly processed,

Record and maintain confidential information about student enquiries using an electronic database,

Provide advice that is free, confidential, non judgemental and impartial,

Refer to other sources of specialist advice where appropriate,

Provide housing advice and support across three university campus, offering Housing Support
Clinics.

DUTIES


Planning and Organising:

- Manage student caseload and own workload without the need to seek regular advice or
supervision.
- Expected to be able to forward plan over a period of months, to ensure an effective service is
provide across the universities campus.
- Expected to maintain a secure record system in order to protect the confidentiality of the
individuals for whom the casework is undertaken.
- Liaise with external agencies where required, on matters of mutual concern.
- Liaise, through the line management structure, University Departments and external agencies in
terms of service planning and joint initiatives.
- Ensure that the provision of housing advice and support is provided on the agreed days and time
as set for the Housing Clinics.
- Maintain accurate information in relation to case work and ensure correspondence and enquiries
are dealt with in a timely manner.
- To liaise with welfare and accommodation offices on a regular basis.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and statutory codes of practice, as advised.
- The post holder as a provider of advice will determine a students eligibility for, and entitlement to
support from a range of external organisations, will need to be able to obtain relevant and detailed
information from local and national bodies that include the Local Authorities, Shelter, ASRA,
Tenancy Deposit Schemes and other advice providers.
- To be able to advice students on the appropriate legal remedies available and when necessary
offer information on the processes involved.

Decision Making:

- To prioritise and resolve caseload. Will be required to make an accurate assessment of student
needs.
- To interpret custom and practice or precedents, which will inform how problems should be tackled.
Individual judgement will determine recommendations on appropriate course of action to take for
each individual case.

Administration:

- To maintain accurate records and statistical information about case load and service users.
- To ensure appropriate information and communication is distributed to students advising when the
Housing Clinics will be held.
- To provide detailed report to management regarding service usage and report to the Liverpool
Student Housing Committee as when requested.
- Experience of using IT packages including Microsoft Word, Excel, competent user of internet and
emailing facilities.
- To ensure that affiliation to appropriate organisations and professional bodies is maintained.
- To be responsible for own administration and clerical activities.
- To ensure that the requirements for Professional Indemnity Insurance are complied with.

Professional Development:

- Develop and retain an understanding of policies and legislation pertaining to housing.
- To be responsible for sourcing and attending appropriate training (as agreed with line manager) to
facilitate the effective delivery of the role.

Other Duties:

- Any other duties as may reasonably be required.
- Ensure that the highest standards of professional performance are maintained.
